Heya.

So I’ve been doing a bit of thinking about the direction of the Patreon here recently. At the moment, we’re still using the ‘donation’ model, where everyone gives what they want, but the higher-level patrons kind of get nothing out of that. I did mention the potential for the use of polls or something else in the past, and I think I’ve worked out a potential model to work off of. Whenever I’m indecisive on what I want to update next, (kind of like I am now) I figured I would put it to a poll to see what everyone wants. These polls aren’t going to be for every update cycle, and if something just got updated last or my inspiration just isn’t agreeing with it, it won’t be a choice on the poll.

In order to keep voting power proportional, each tier will have their own poll and each vote will be weighted differently. The scale is below.

Cool Guys ($2.50) – 1 vote
Cooler Guys ($5) – 2 votes
Coolest Guys ($10) – 4 votes
MADLADS ($25) – 10 votes
PATRICIANS ($50) – 20 votes

Once the polling period ends, I’ll display the results individually, and make a graph with the adjusted numbers for easy reading. I’ll be checking this post a few times a day for a couple of days to see your feedback, so please let me know what you think.

EDIT: I also have the option of being one of the first three tiers using Discord subscriptions. There aren't many of them, but depending on how we decide to include them, you might see an additional graph for their numbers if we decide to use the poll system. We're still deciding on that.

I'll assume my 15$ a month donation will fit into the 4 vote count? Either way if it helps you go for it.

I think polls should remain suggestions. Being forced to write something could kill your creativity.

The idea here is if I have two or more things my inspiration is really jiving with, I'll toss up a poll and we'll see which one wins. I'm not going to make something I'm not feeling at the time a choice. I do understand the concern, though.

I feel you should write what you think is best and just take our input only into consideration to stimulate your writting but I will also use my votes wisely and upgrade my pledge, Could I just make a suggestion for the last member, its got to be a pokemon that is feared for its ferocity like a dragon to maybe expand on their mythos biology and social structure... or like a charizard, or a tyranitar. I feel Lee's team needs a pokemon that is a heavy hitter to complete his team and to also showcase Lee's skill with the handling of dangerous animals. Thanks.

The only issue I see with this idea is more of a long term one, and I suppose a matter of making very clear definitions of those backer benefits. If you ever decide to use a poll for something else than choosing the next update, would voting power still apply? I could think of several scenarios where it would be inconvenient to have to apply it to all future polls, but if you don't, some people might feel like they're not "getting what they paid for".

Polls are good, but I’m not so sure on such a heavy weighting toward patreon tier levels- the vast majority of people can vote for something and it takes only an extremely small number to override it. While it lets the high tiers have more say, I think that the ratio of voting power to sub level should be much smaller if you must have a weighted vote system. Enough times that a very large majority votes for something but loses because of the weighted system may end up having a bunch of people walk away. (Full disclosure, I am a mid-tier supporter)

My only real concern is how this actually makes a difference in anything. If the polls aren't for every update cycle, then what's really the point? If you're arbitrarily updating based on inspiration, then the donation model is the best one because forcing you to write something you don't feel inspired for won't end well for both us readers or you, the writer. Conversely, if the polls would be every update cycle, then it could either be abused by people mass voting one thing every time and that wouldn't be ideal for you either. So like...how does this practically impact us? I don't get the point of having this system if it won't be used consistently.

I will be honest with you. The only reason i support authors is so they can write what they want, when they want. Quality over quantity so to say. As such a poll system would be counter productive.

I can’t wait to throw all of my votes in the trash can and write in JC
