Borrowing from Thomas Jefferson's analogy about slavery, nationalism is like holding a wolf by the ears—you can neither hold on nor safely let go of it. To create popular support, Xi Jinping has stirred up such intense nationalist fervor within the PRC that embracing it leads to all diplomatic incidents as its people attempt to enforce its territorial claims and badmouth everyone. This approach has made enemies of all its neighbors, instilling resentment, fear, and a sense of urgency, prompting them to turn to America and an increasingly assertive Japan for support. Yet, to relinquish this nationalist stance and back down would make Xi appear weak, risking the loss of popular support and empowering other factions within the CCP who seek to tear him down. Let's strike while the iron is hot and seek to create an Indo-Pacific NATO, complete with a revived TPP, to bind it together beyond just security. It stopped Soviet tanks from rolling into Fulda, and it will stop the bandit government from invading Taiwan, India, or salami, slicing more territory in the South China Sea. I think it is only iron-clad defense treaties and an overwhelming position that will secure peace. I'm also still hella salty from not being able to visit my family in Taiwan last June. That was terrifying and we need to take this threat more seriously.
