Chris. Enjoy your comments on issues with China but please get your facts right. The 3 Virginia Class submarines are being BOUGHT by Australia from the USA and are not expected to be supplied (after being paid for) starting in 2034. Australia is giving the USA $3 Billion to upgrade their shipyards so that the USA can produce submarines faster than their current production rate of 1.3 submarines per year. The US wants to increase that rate to 2 per year but to meet its promise of Virginia Class submarines fpr Australia as well as its own needs it needs to increase the rate to 2.33 per year.

As for the commitment if Taiwan is invaded. The US hasn't even officially declared what it would do other than the occasional rant from President Trump which is hardly official policy. Why then should Australia commit itself to a hypothetical. By the way Australia will spend 2.03% of GDP on defence in 2025/26 compared to the USA of 3.4% in 2024. The % will increase in future years as the commitment for the nuclear submarines is needed.

I'm very concerned about the Aussie government after seeing its failure with the Pacific Island nations, and how the administration seems more interested in cozying up to the CCP.
