Duet is the episode that truly sets DS9 on its own path from TNG to me. That episode showed a darker tone and a moral gray area that is a common thread through the series. People you think of as “the good guys” aren’t always so. I feel it is the Trek most grounded in reality.

Duet is he best episode of season one - and it was originally written to be a filler episode to save on the budget! Just goes to show (and will be seen in future Trek in general) that the 'small' episodes with a limited scope are often the best ones. And DS9 gets better from here onwards too. Its a fan favourite for a reason!
