I’m from Massachusetts. I remember this event very well. The weather man in the movie is Todd Gross, who was on Channel Seven in Boston. And it’s pronounced Gloss-tah.

"Bugsy" or "Bugs" is an old slang term for crazy or kooky. Think Bugs Bunny. The sailor who left the crew before the fateful voyage actually quit because he had a "spiritual" experience while butchering a swordfish. He claimed he could feel the fish pleading for its life. In real life, he didn't want tot face the captain and explain the reason, so he left town without telling anyone.
