Animal symbolism: Toranaga compares the Anjin and Yabushige to goshawks, calling them short-winged and predictable. Goshawks are short-winged, because they're adapted to hunting in dense forests, which requires maneuverability rather than speed. They're not very fast compared to falcons, but they're insanely good at navigating obstacles, which is what a pilot quite literally does. And people who seek to control their own fate, I suppose.
