Malachi is a very capable person. I’m sure that even if the assassin escapes, he will be able to figure a way to overcome her. However, I don’t know how well he would do if he compromised his beliefs just for convenience sake. Unlike with the thief, the assassin isn’t necessarily adding some good to the world. And Malachi still didn’t let the thief get off Scottfree.
