The skirt grabbing scene...it's such a small scene but tells so much hence that's why it was so dramatic.. At that time commoners would wear ankle length skirts while noble woman would wear full length skirt, hence it was disrespectful to touch or lift noble woman's skirt and show her feet. If anyone dares to disrespect Aeshin like that it's either a bad man or foreigner (Or both). There was a scene in past episodes where Aeshin was in a shop getting her feet measured for new shoes and Eugene walked in at that moment, Aeshin awkwardly started to cover her feet and Eugene respectfully avoided the gaze. So even Eugene who can't stop mentioning how American he is didn't disrespect her like that (Plus it showed his true korean nature). But Dongmae did that twice to her, first time they were kids so it might not be the worst thing to do at that age, but he did it again which makes you think he hasn't changed. Also Aeshin looks terrified. Which is weird because we have never seen her like this before, even in front of japanese or american guns pointed at her or when Eugene was interrogating her she never showed any fear, but with Dongmae just touching her skirt she got so scared. So it can't be only because of disrespectful act, another reason of her intense emotions is that past incident with him. It's almost like a trauma for her. She got deeply hurt by what he said at that time. Hence she asks in fear "What are you doing?" almost waiting for him to say same hursh words, but this time he says "I'm doing nothing", as if telling her I'm not trying to harm you, but at same time he is touching her skirt which itself is disrepectful so he already is hurming her. Which makes his character more confusing...like did he change did he not? I think another reason why she is so scared is that she might regret saving him, she is scared that she might have saved this bad person, that other people were right, he is a butcher's kid who doesn't deserve to have any rights and she's just a noble woman who innocently and foolishly saved this horrible man and now if he goes around and hurts other innocent people what will that make her? I think that's what she is most terrified of when it comes to Dongmae. And so far with his acts, like randomly killing people on street, his japanese side, rumours that surround him and now with him touching her skirt again, doesn't make him look like a decent man in Aeshin's eyes.

Someone wrote a detailed explanation, but to make it simpler: Let's say a lowly class lad in Europe grabbed the skirt of a countess and kept holding onto it despite her trying to set free. How would she feel? Angry? Humiliated? Violated? You already know the butchers were supposed to be the lowest of the lowest in terms of the social hierarchy, and Ae-sin is an offspring of one of the highest noble families. On the other hand, Dong-mae feels he can do it following his heart now that the world has changed and they're equal.

I remember the last scene was a huge discussion in local forums in Korea at that time. People were discussing how beautiful that scene was and at the same time so tense and scary. I actually learned a lot about how things were back when there was class of people

In the scene where Dongmae grabs Ae-shin's skirt, the background music reflects the trauma Ae-shin feels from her past. When they were children, Ae-shin hid Dongmae in her palanquin while they were fleeing, but Dongmae insulted her by calling her a "pampered aristocratic girl." This remark deeply hurt Ae-shin, leaving her with a sense of humiliation. So, when Dongmae grabs her skirt, she is reminded of his words, and the tension, fear, and shame from that moment resurface. The dark background music emphasizes this emotional weight. Dongmae comes from the lowest social class in Joseon. In those times, it was unthinkable for someone of his status to even make eye contact with someone like Ae-shin, let alone walk beside her. But because he harbors feelings for her, when his hand brushes against her skirt, his heart flutters with excitement. However, due to his low status, he suppresses these feelings. By grabbing her skirt, he is, in a way, expressing the feelings he has tried so hard to He is awkward at expressing his emotions, so he behaves towards her in a distorted way.
