What Eugene was drinking at Joseph's grave was takju that Joseph kept mentioning in his letter. Which I think is so sad. The thing about the Joseon era is that historical records are immaculately kept (ie. The Anals and the Diaries that are now excellent primary sources for history). When Hui-seong mentioned starting newspaper he said it was to record facts which is very significant especially in this context because there is so much historical revisionism surrounding this time among countries involved. And to do it in only Korean (Hangul) signifies the independent sovereignty of the country but also that the paper is for the masses, to inform them (writing using Chinese characters were done by higher class who had the privilege of being educated as such. Hangul was literally invented for the masses who didn't know Chinese characters).

Heeseong may seem frivolous on the surface, always laughing as if carefree, but he is actually a deeply thoughtful man. Every choice he has made reflects his character. For instance, his decision to start a newspaper to promote justice or his willingness to step back for the woman he loves, respecting and supporting her choices, shows his depth. Heeseong is a good person. Although the story in the drama is fictional, characters like Go Ae-shin, her grandfather, and Eugene Choi are based on real historical figures. In fact, about two years ago, the remains of Hwang Ki-hwan, the real-life figure who inspired Eugene Choi, were repatriated to Korea after 100 years. Hwang Ki-hwan was an independence activist who immigrated to the United States as a teenager in 1904. When the U.S. joined World War I in 1917, he enlisted as a volunteer soldier. After the war, instead of returning to the U.S., he joined the Korean delegation at the Paris Peace Conference in June 1919. In the same year, when Korean laborers who had drifted to Britain via Russia and the North Sea were at risk of being repatriated to Japan, Hwang persuaded the British government to relocate 35 of them to France. While this drama is fictional, it features many real-life figures. The character Go Ae-shin is inspired by Korea’s first female militia leader. Like Go Ae-shin, she was born into a traditional Confucian scholar family. Her background and her later involvement in the militia movement share many similarities with Go Ae-shin’s story. However, one key difference is that she was married and carried out independence activities alongside her husband and in-laws. Go Ae-shin’s grandfather is also based on a famous Korean independence activist. He was a symbolic figure who devoted his life to protecting Korea’s sovereignty and resisting Japan’s aggression and injustice. He is remembered as one of the leading figures who fought for Korea’s independence. I added these details because I thought knowing these facts might make the story even more interesting.😎

I find it amazing how you guys can catch almost all the details of this drama after watching it just once, whereas I had to watch it multiple times to notice them. Your reactions are the best! And Justin is handsome😊 I remember seeing in another reaction video that Justin shaved his beard and cut his hair short, and I thought he looked really good.
