Takashi Mori, one of the greatest villains, till this day I still wonder who was worse as a villain of this show, Lee Wanik or Takashi Mori…

Mali

I always love the reveal in the end although Eugene must feel so betrayed

Mali

I agree, Lee Wanik is that villain that has been right in front of our eyes the entire time meanwhile Takashi Mori makes us feel so betrayed

The protest held in front of the palace by Ae-shin’s grandfather is based on a true story, and he was, in fact, a very famous independence activist in Joseon history. In the drama, the portrayal of the Joseon king seems to have been glorified, whereas in reality, he was quite powerless and incompetent. While interpreting history is subjective, in Korea, the king of this era is generally viewed in a very negative light. However, a tragic event in his life must be considered—his wife, the queen of Joseon, was assassinated by the Japanese in front of witnesses and her body was burned. The king witnessed and endured this event firsthand, which deepened his fear and perception of Japan as a terrifying and overwhelming force. The timeline of Mr. Sunshine takes place after the queen’s assassination, which is why this historical fact is omitted. Keeping this context in mind might enrich your understanding of the story. Starting with episode 17, the story is about to intensify dramatically, like a whirlwind. As for Hina’s mother, her story will be clarified more explicitly in the episodes to come! And Dong-mae truly loves Ae-shin. You can see this from the scene in episode 1 when Dong-mae appears in Joseon. Originally, he was in Japan, but he came to Joseon because of Ae-shin. He came specifically to see her and has been intentionally creating opportunities to cross paths with her ever since.

This isn’t an important detail, but the French fencing instructor, Leo, is actually a YouTuber. His real name is Fabien, and he’s a very famous Frenchman in Korea. Haha! Koreans really like him.

The people of Joseon opposed modernization at the time because they had experienced many negative events, such as foreigners looting the graves of Joseon kings, among other issues. As a result, they refused to adopt Western culture and technology. However, due to its lack of power, Joseon was eventually forced into modernization through certain events. During this period, Korea faced challenges from Western imperialism and the surrounding powerful nations seeking to assert control. The drama depicts the struggles of a nation caught at the crossroads of geopolitical tensions as foreign powers competed for dominance. Traditional values clashed with modernization and foreign influence. The drama portrays the internal conflict of a society in turmoil, highlighting the tension between preserving cultural heritage—exemplified by characters like Ae-shin’s grandfather—and embracing change.

You guys had the same response that everyone did when Dongmae got shot! I remember there was so much uproar while people waited for further episodes to be aired and everyone had different opinions about whether he was dead or not. I love that you guys appreciate how naturally these characters are fleshed out in their complexity. I just love the writing of some of the dialogue and of course, the plot points. About Huiseong, I'd say that aside from falling head over heels for Aesin, his grief is also because he's saying goodbye to what could have been. If he didn't avoid coming home for 10 years instead of facing the repercussions of his family's actions, they would have been married. He could easily see himself with this woman by his side, but because of his 'cowardly' choices, he lost the opportunity before he even realised. However, since coming back to Joseon, her influence on him has given him the courage to do what he wants with his life and find purpose. You also have Dongmae finally understanding that Aesin has only always been sincere to him (even when she has harsh things to say or didn't treat him differently because of his status even as a child). For her, he did the right thing by informing her grandfather of what happened with the letters so he wouldn't lose hope thinking there was no-one out there willing to stand up for Joseon like him. Dongmae has also shown more kindness and tolerance towards others than he'd willingly admit. His fear that Aesin would be the one pulling the trigger goes back to what she said to him on the train tracks - that she would be able to kill him, but she doesn't think he could. He is relieved that even if his death were warranted, she now doesn't have the heart to do it either...or at least he'd like to believe that. As for Eugene, the fact that he was friends with the Japanese colonel revealed at the end reminds you that in America, Eugene did not feel anything but negativity towards Joseon. His friend could potentially have said he was going to Joseon to work as it is a colony of Japan and that wouldn't have been a problem for Eugene. You see how far Eugene has come and although you could say he has done many things purely because they were just and he is a good person, he also has done a lot more for Joseon than he really needed to. You also have the jab where the Japanese colonel says he was always of high status in his own country (unlike Eugene). He insinuates that if Eugene is here as an American, then they are 'friends' and Eugene shouldn't have an issue with what's happening here. However, if Eugene is considering himself to be from Joseon, then he is lesser than him in status and power.

You should watch the Jessi interview with Byun Yo Han who plays Hui Seong, the show is called Showterview. They have a lot of chemistry!

k_s_r28

yeah I love their chemistry! Yo Han's personality is completely different from Hui-seong. lol.

Fun fact: the actor playing Colonel Mori is the phone shop guy in episode 16 of Twenty Five Twenty One.
