Opium was often a choice to manage pain. It also says he was in China...probably hiding out. I think people just understand that Dongmae has nowhere to go since he has lost favour in Japan. He can't escape his heritage and chose to return to Joseon.

When Yu-jin told Dong-mae that she wasn't with him, that's not what he said (THE DAMN MISTRANSLATIONS!) They were each looking at the bodies, fearing that Ae-sin might be one of the bodies, starting from each end of the street and they met in the middle. Yu-jin told him that she wasn't over here (as in on his side of the street) and Dong-mae said she wasn't on his side of the street either. Which made it a poignant reunion scene, imo.

52:51 The scene where Eugene meets Ahn Chang-ho holds significant meaning for Koreans. The reason is that Ahn Chang-ho is a very famous independence activist in Korean history, and every Korean knows his name. His surprise appearance in the drama carries great symbolic weight for many Koreans. Although the meeting between Eugene and Ahn Chang-ho is purely a product of the writer’s imagination, it is historically accurate that Ahn Chang-ho was active in the United States during that time. This likely influenced the decision to include him in the drama. Additionally, Eugene’s chance encounter with Ahn Chang-ho seems to serve as a narrative device, foreshadowing that Eugene will fully commit to the path of working for Joseon’s independence, aligning with Ae-shin’s mission.

55:15 There is a mistranslation here. The one wishing for Eugene to stay alive is not himself but Ae-shin. Eugene’s exact line is: “Please let her stay alive. For that reason alone, I will gladly follow that path as if I were flying.”
