The queen's hair (in the story) has gone gray overnight due to the extreme stress of worrying about what might happen to her son. We're used to stories about people's hair going gray overnight from extremely stressful situations, so it isn't so out of the ordinary. King Gwangjong, known for his many political purges, is also similar to another king that went on a killing spree in the early Joseon Dynasty. The purges help fortify the throne and get shit done, laying the foundation for more prosperous rules that follow. At least from a historical standpoint.
