<THE GOD NARE WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>

Deny.

While part of him continued his planning, thinking about how he’d escape the world if it came to it, the rest of him focused on his art. His pile of sketchbooks had long gone above his sitting height and the sky was beginning to dim, leaving him to take off the glasses he’d made as he switched mediums, materializing some wood but treating it like clay as he used his magic to sculpt it.

Altering the consistency of the material he’d made, he felt it shift and bend in his hands the way it never would have naturally, indulging in the sensation as he worked it into a small figure of himself before changing it again to a mask, and a tree from there, and so on repeatedly as more time went by until it was dark enough out that he accepted it was time to stop for the night and went inside to cook dinner, getting a warm welcome.

“Welcome back, you’re earlier than I was expecting,” Thera said when she heard him come in, perking up from the game she was playing with her aunt while Sonya smiled at him as well. “Productive day?”

“No, not really. I actually spent a lot of it in the backyard relaxing.”

The answer got him some strange looks. He wasn’t one to just do nothing and relax, at least not without reason but he didn’t give more of an explanation, instead moving to the kitchen to begin sorting out dinner for the night as he pulled ingredients down to begin his cooking.

Seeing something more was at play though, the other two followed, Sonya speaking first and sounding concerned.

“Is everything okay, Ben?”

“Kind of? I mean, not really but nothing unexpected at this point but it worked out so I don’t need to worry about working anymore. Hmm, maybe tomorrow I’ll focus on my cooking. I could go off and see what ingredients I can secure and then go wild with it. Yeah, that sounds like a pretty nice idea, doesn’t it?”

“And that also wasn’t an answer,” Thera told him. “What happened?”

“...Alright. Long story short the gods got in my way again and then immediately tried to take advantage of me when I’ve been doing my best for this stupid planet and I’m sick of it so I told them I’m done. I’ve officially retired from doing things. I’m not awakening people, I’m not making things, and I’m not trying to save this world. The forgotten one is officially forgetting about whatever problems this planet has and focusing on using his last few months of life for himself.”

While Sonya’s eyes held concern and doubt at his statement, Thera’s were nothing but excitement she was trying and failing to hide and he knew exactly why for both, even without looking into their heads. The first didn’t really believe he could stop doing things, not given the way he normally lived, and as for Thera, this was a result she could happily get behind.

She’d never wanted him putting his life on the line for the waves and she was absolutely against the idea that he should sacrifice himself to try and kill the demon’s god, and even if she viewed him achieving the levels he thought he needed for it as impossible in the time they had, if he was willing to quit then that just made things easier.

He wasn’t going to fault her for that mentality though, it wasn’t like he wanted her to put herself in harm's way either and if he’d already decided to quit then who was he to decide how anyone else might feel about that fact?

No, anyone could hold whatever opinion they would, it didn’t matter. While they were still processing his answer he placed their meals down in front of them before taking a seat himself to dig in, trying to enjoy what he’d made but barely being able to taste it.

His head was still a mess. He was still mad, he was still frustrated, and more than anything else, he was still planning on what he might do in the future with all of the chaos such thoughts brought him.

“Hey guys, would you… Sorry, ignore me.”

He’d almost asked if they’d leave the world with him if he could and abandon the war altogether but that was stupid for a number of reasons. He was sure that more than a few gods were watching, he didn’t want to let any of them know he was thinking about that, lest they try and get in his way again, and just as importantly, he didn’t intend to give Thera, Sonya, or anyone he knew a choice if he did it. Let them hate him for it if they would but asking them now wouldn’t change that when he fully intended for the people he loved to live.

They could both see there was more on his mind than that too but left it at that, giving him the room to process his feelings as the evening wore on.

---

Thera was nestled in his arms by the time they got to bed that night, seeming perfectly content while he in return stared at the ceiling above with the question of what he was even going to do for the night. Normally he would talk to the gods to pass the time in the evenings but he was still in no mood to see any of them but he still wasn’t in a hurry to sleep either, not wanting to deal with whatever hell his subconscious would see fit to put him through.

<THE GOD MYRIAD WANTS PERMISSION TO BRING YOU TO HIS REALM. ALLOW?>

Deny.

He had another option though, one he’d never actually bothered to test. Supposedly, during his last job run he’d gained the ability to lucid dream, a skill he’d never had the opportunity to test because of how he’d usually spend his nights and one he didn’t even know for sure if he’d be able to pull off without practice first but decided that then was as good a time as any to see if it would work, and doing his best with that goal in mind, closed his eyes and tried to retreat into himself.

It was a strange feeling, slowly falling to sleep. He could feel it happening and tried to keep his awareness of it and that seemed to work. By the time he was dreaming a thousand things at once, he felt fully aware that it was in fact a dream and his fractured psyche took control of the scene, bringing it to order as he changed it all into a single area reminiscent of Myriad’s realm. Just an infinite, empty expanse for him to work in.

“Which only leaves the question of what to do now then?” He sighed, not seeing anything to really make it worthwhile compared to just staying awake. “I guess I need to do this to let my body and mind get some rest, but…Whatever, I guess I’ll just keep planning.”

Since it was within the confines of his mind he was able to imagine things into being and doing so spent the night creating potential structures for a vessel to hold thousands along with the enchantments he’d need to place to power it, all for the goal of his potential escape.

TheCrazyDuck

While I get that Thera is excited that Ben won't try to sacrifice himself anymore, shouldn't she be concerned about how he just did a complete 180 and just gave up?

Vorquel

He should def use the lucid dreaming skill to spend more time with Thera.

demure

Now, was it really dreaming or has he unintentionally made is own bit of devine land?

Demolug

To me, if I was Myriad, this would be the biggest "oh shit" moment, Ben willingly sleeping? It’s been years since the last time he slept without being forced to.

Sesharan

Yeah, I’m thinking we’ll see some mortal spokespeople tomorrow. Ben has historically cooled down within the space of a day, so the fact that he hasn’t here is going to be raising the divine alarm level.

Corvusamous

Welp it's concerning he's not taking to Thera about this. I get his logic but gheez

michael pigott

I'm shocked Ben hasn't gotten annoyed enough at the notification spam to build an Airplane mode amulet.

michael pigott

So do you think it's gonna be respectful but worried freinds, previous victims like Nares granddaughter or tonedeaf demands from the idiot gods? I can honestly see all 3, possibly at once.

Justchillin

With everything she's been worried about for years, she must really want to look to the bright side of things.

Sesharan

For all the gods’ many (many, many) flaws, they’re usually at least aware enough to let the gods who actually know Ben take the lead on handling him when he’s in a mood (at least, when they’re in damage control mode rather than “laying down the law” mode). It’ll definitely be concerned friends. Normally Sachel would probably be the visitor of choice since she has a good personal relationship with Ben and she is, after all, Myriad’s Oracle and thus the person who’s meant to serve as his voice, but we know that she’s currently out on a mission. Thera might be asked to speak on behalf of Anailia, but the gods would probably (rightly) consider that a risky move which might set Ben off. I think the most likely option is for us to see Falk speaking on behalf of Nare, but only once the gods have worked out a deal between themselves that they think will mend this mess.

SacredSteel

Poor Myriad is going to have a heart attack at this rate.

Michigo

Details aside: it makes it more likely for him to survive. And that's basically her ultimate goal as far as her love is concerned. Understanding him is secondary compared to his survival. Heck, i bet seeing him take a break is already a HUGE burden of her emotional back.

Michigo

I bet you are right. I guess actualizing a semi divine mind realm isn't actually that strange, given his eldritch combination of skills and titles.

Michigo

He can't, because he is the only one that can keep a secret from those meddling gods. At least he already knows what Thera wants: to see her beloved survive. And that's his new primary goal, hence he gives himself the ok in Theras name... without even talking with her. I guess eldritch mind skills can result in whacky relationships.

Michigo

Yeah, Falk would be a good pick. Ben really respects him, AND he has a very direct line to Nare as a future god himself. If anyone has a chance to speak with Ben, it would be Falk. To bad (for the gods) Falk wouldn't even be against Bens point of view (to escape instead of choosing Martyrdom).

michael pigott

At least until Ben starts making enclosures out of that anti faith stone, telling anyone that he's planning to leave means their god can hear it. from their mind

Erain

I like this story. I really do! Hope it goes beyond just the demon god to be honest.... But... I can't say I like this arc. Long time coming to be sure so I logically understand. Him shutting his god out when the guy has kept some of his dark secrets just because he is a god? Argue what you want but that is what is happening right? Dude has done a lot for Ben, took a chance on him and became his friend and Ben repays this by not even asking for time for himself and just shuts him out to enjoy his own vacuum of opinions that will tear down his life? Am I missing something here? What is the good outcome of this?

Justchillin

Ben may as well be having a breakdown, it's just way less immediately visible due to his mind. He shouldn't really be blamed for not making good decisions right now. To make a metaphor, Myriad is stuck outside Ben's room, unable to break in and give him a hug because Ben's locked door and its surrounding walls are made of stainless steel with soundproofing.

Erain

Fair enough... It may be better to handle it for me if I wait a few weeks and come back. Binge the entire arc in one go instead of dwelling on it day by day. Here is hoping he gets something to tier 3! If he does bump something in this arc my guess is connect as it makes more thematic sense.

Collateral_ink

To be honest, calling Myriad's initial approach of Ben "taking a chance on him" is...naive. I'm not disagreeing with you that Ben shutting out his friend is wrong, and friends shouldn't really keep score, but if they did the balance books would be heavily in Ben's favor. More, that first meeting was, in hindsight, seriously predatory. Ben was on the world for months before Myriad approached him...the very first night he was completely alone and isolated. To me, this says Myriad was aware of Ben beforehand--the one mortal that was technically allowable for him to approach--and waited until he was utterly isolated to make his play. That's not the act of a disinterested or even benevolent party. I don't really blame Myriad; he was desperate. But, he was taking advantage of Ben. To Myriad's credit, it's pretty much the only time he's taken advantage of him.

Tim

There were really two directions for Ben break dowm from constant god interferance. Shutting down and leaving, or Going full grim dark, figure out how till kill gods in thier realms and start killing troublesome ones off.

Collateral_ink

Embrace the power of "and." Ben can off a few of them on the way out the door as a little farewell present to himself. Just kidding. But I will be disappointed if Ben doesn't get to personally kill Eneth before the end of this story.

Carl Mason

Even with faith stone or Sacrilege barriers, as soon as the confidant leaves the enclosure they will be open to divine brain-picking again. So there is no way to safely share the burden, or ask for input.

Collateral_ink

Yeah, Ben really only has two modes: working, or knocked unconscious. On the other hand, I am curious if he could awaken Lucid Dreaming and what it would turn into if he did.

Carl Mason

We'll see, if it sticks around as is for his next dream, he may have created a personal realm within his soul.

Carl Mason

It should be concerning to her, but it also just happened, let it sink in a bit and it will probably hit her just how big his decision is. Then will come the concerns.

Collateral_ink

I kinda keep waiting for this to turn into a cultivation novel and ben discover how to cultivate faith and do all the things that supposedly only "gods" do. I also fully expect he won't end up calling himself a god if he ever ascends. Immortal is more accurate anyway.

Kendaar

Also to be fair to Ben, this is all been in one day, give the guy a day too himself, sometimes you just want to be alone for awhile, never mind the fact that opening up communication to myriad also is inviting him to route around Ben's head. One day off is more than fair, I would also say a week is fine, but beyond that is taking it too far and he really should have talked to Myriad by that point.

Demolug

That would be something alright. May be hard though, I just checked, and lucid dreaming is a level-less skill, if I remember correctly, those tend to get absorbed into an awakening instead of awakening themselves, unless extremes are met I guess. Lucid dreaming being a mind skill of sorts makes the extreme more likely. That said, Ben is a contender for two mind skills. Could a push to lucid dreaming be what his main mind skills are missing to awaken to tier three? T’would be quite something.

Collateral_ink

I'm fairly certain he could awaken his mind skills to tier 3 right now. Connect, too. He would just have to risk death doing it by connecting with the imprisoned Outsider soul or God souls. As for Lucid Dreaming, he's awakened level-less skills before. Amalgamated Thought Structure was one, and I think there was one more. Or, he could transition it into a leveling skill and awaken it in a few days of Odin Sleep.

Demolug

True, I’d forgotten the transition that made his demon body skill levelable. I wonder what it could transition to. My first guess would be something like "actual dreamer" where his dreams become a weird little pocket of internal reality, with aspects of actualisation/materialisation.

Person

Myriad can only read the parts of Ben's mind that Ben allows. It is by no means "all or nothing".

Person

It bugged me when Ben started a sentence he didn't finish. With his thought speed and parallel processing power he's had subjective minutes or even hours to think about every word that comes out of his mouth. Also, I'm a little surprised that Ben can't put some of his minds to sleep on rotation and still have 3/4 (or more) of his minds available at any given time. I fear the MC is a bit too OP for the plot as initially planned, and Turnip is trying to stick to that plot, even in the face of solutions to the presented problems that seem obvious given what Ben is now capable of. IIRC, way back when, Ben wanted to be a comic book artist but has yet to pull an Iron Man even though he should be able to produce something that could stomp the MCU Hulkbuster like a rotten pumpkin. His spacial storage for example should make it possible to have an effectively unlimited supply of misses, to say nothing of bullets. Unlimited mana should equate to unlimited defenses, unlimited offensive power. The only demons he would then have to worry about would be the the ones unaffected by mana. Many of them would be dealt with using kinetic kill weapons (missiles and bullets, using something other than mana for the explosion). A nanoscopic amount of anti-matter can provide a pretty goddammit big boom, and he wouldn't even need to store any antimatter on board... he could make a materialized for it, or multiple materializers depending on what his rate of fire goal was. Tanks. Mechs (which are really just tanks only dumber), gunships, ARTILLERY. A continuous artillery barage from the aforementioned antimatter missile generators could shut down a gateway. Rinse, repeate. Fuck your invasion. But he hasn't done any of that.

Collateral_ink

I mostly agree. But I think that before he met Oaun, and therefore before he managed to create souls for infinite mana, he was a lot more limited. He could make a lot, but he couldn't create infinitely and he couldn't power them infinitely. That limited his power potential a lot. Then, after he met Oaun and gained infinite mana, all of that potential power became irrelevant, because even if he could kill every tier 1 and 2 demon out there (and that's iffy for some of those tier 2 demons), he still can't compete with the tier 3 demons (Ben was still powerless against the crazy outsider girl, more or less) and Oaun is untouchable. Those are the real problem, because a single one of those tier 3s or just Oaun himself can win the war the second they decide playing with their food isn't fun anymore.

Leaored

To be honest I agree with Ben's decision even if not for the same reasons he does. I think that if he thought a little more he would have discovered that even if they somehow survived the waves the gods would still create hell on his life because they didn't want him to become a god and this time there would be a lot less pressure from the council of gods so they probably would do a lot more damage. This means that at this point it doesn't matter if Ben survives the third wave or not, his life is probably going to end in a tragedy anyway so why should he make an effort just to end up achieving misery?

Luboš Hemala

Wouldn't it be funny if sleep finally trigerred some changes in Ben's mind, right?

Luboš Hemala

I think his kidnapping plan is impossible without telling at least some people.

Collateral_ink

Oh, if they somehow survived the invasion this world would definitely end up in a state of constant holy wars between all the gods and their factions. Without the unifying threat of the demons some would immediately seek to obtain more power, others would ally against them, others would hedge their bets and support both from the sidelines waiting for their chance, etc. etc.

Person

Or as some Spanish speaking cultures might say "Por que no los dos?"

Thando vanika

Keep in mind that most gods present are some of the most diplomatic/ cooperative of their pythons with lot of them risking life and limb for their followers. Ben really is an extreme in the case of how they might act to mortals. Because let’s not forget Ben unironically is their Kryptonite and Ben is the only person most of gods can’t read which may be why their stance is so harsh. Which may actually be screwing him since his head is too crazy to understand. Now that I think about it, really it’s surprising more drastic measures have not been taken since his pretty much an walking eldritch horror in the skin of a man, at least to those that don’t know him personally.

Michigo

It's more complicated than that. Gods generally can only interact with their own believers. Case in point: Miriad can't directly speak to Thera or spy into her thoughts, because she is a follower of Analia.

Michigo

Not exactly. Yes, Ben hasn't found a good way to fight Oaun. But he willingly holds back against everyone else. In his last battle against that really pesky time magic/ divination demon he was held back by fighting against someone that had his loved one as a hostage. And against the known t3 fighters he never went all in, he handled all those fights as a type of training with a handicap. Space magic duche bag is another good example: not even the gods had a good way to discipline him, meanwhile Ben got a bit annoyed and put him in a time warped pokeball. OP is right: if Ben was inclined to do so, he could make the whole frickin planet they are on go BOOM. That's the type of power Ben has access to. And as a top tier crafter he is THE guy to use insane power like that in more productive/ efficient ways than a simple "BOOM". Aka over the top weaponry and stuff. Heck, even the tiny lil knife he crafted and enchanted YEARS ago already made Miriad go "damn, that's nasty". And that knife was basically a throw away toy in comparison to what he could craft even then (he never bothered to go all out for his own equipment... and that's insane, considering his time and time proven paranoia is more than justified).

Talon88

He made that one laser cannon that cleared the clouds and it was never touched on again. Pair the cannon with a soul bracelet and you have a practically endless supply of charge to fire it. Ten or twenty of those at each invasion spot would make things so much easier for them. It’d even reduce further when people start getting skills for the cannon

Corvusamous

I thought any god could spy on thoughts but they only pay attention around their believers. Like the meeting at the Craftsman tower was taking about how all of then were athiests to avoid the gods finding it about their plans and then they tried avoiding the super religious to keep attention off then

Thando vanika

Yeah it’s more like a rule not to look, but the difference with Ben is he has to let them into his head. Which the very fact myriad needs to ask Ben to see his thoughts is probably a very unusual feeling for most of gods.

Person

Exactly! He could be doing so much more than he does... and he could probably build little factories full of his humunculi to produce all sorts of stuff, continously, the sorts of weapons that would allow the untrained to SLAUGHTER hordes of demons.
