Deny deny deny deny.

He woke up early the next day and left while both Thera and Sonya still slept, off to do exactly what he’d thought about only the day before, going to get ingredients.

He did his best to ignore the shop as he passed through, not wanting to feel any temptation from the things it held but chose to take the mini gate to his workshop in Anailia rather than pass through Thera’s family home to get to the main gate network and went on from there to do his shopping.

With many of the original gate cities at least partially abandoned due to their proximity to invasion points, he used what little knowledge he had of the safe ones to go to a city he’d built the gate for himself, walking through to one that was enjoying a breezy afternoon on a coast.

While coastal cities made for an easier route for the terrestrial and aquatic races to meet, it also meant they were valuable regions for trade, telling him that even if he hadn’t been there before, their shops and markets would likely be filled with interesting products and ingredients to get his hands on as he started his exploration down the streets, jogging through them to see as much as he could while popping into any shops that caught his eyes.

With the rings on his fingers, he wasn’t much limited by space either as he went, finding a spice store early on and peppering the shopkeeper with questions as he asked how different ones would be used and what they would be good for before buying a few pounds of every variety that was held to play with later and going on from there.

It wasn’t long after that he found a fish market to spend some time in too, looking deeply at the options while finding out what he could from the salesmen about those strange forms of life.

Like the terrestrial side of the planet he lived on, the ecosystem of the aquatic side was a mess as well due to all of the groups that had been scooped up and brought along by their gods, accidentally or intentionally bringing along some of the life of their worlds too, carving out new niches in their new home that was kept constantly out of balance by the sheer virtue of the scale of that change.

He couldn’t imagine the scale of what had to be near-constant extinction events taking place as what native life there was ended up constantly and repeatedly devastated by the things that were brought but on the plus side, it gave him plenty of interesting options to choose from before inevitably deciding not to choose at all, instead buying bits of everything.

After all, why not? He was rich, might as well enjoy the benefits all of that money had to offer, especially if it would soon be meaningless. If he stayed and everyone died then his wealth wasn’t going to amount to much and if he left then it would be just as meaningless.

Actually, if I’m going to abandon this entire planet then I should probably look into buying everything I can while I can. I’d need to make more voidstone but it’s not like it would hurt to stock up on resources. Seeds especially, maybe some domesticated livestock too. Let’s see, is there anything else? Shouldn’t really need tools or raw materials since I can materialize both, it really does just come down to the things I can’t make myself, which is… A surprisingly slim list, isn’t it? Huh, I’ll just have to keep an eye out I guess. And then-

His thoughts were cut off by his practice. No matter how he was feeling, he still couldn’t keep himself from using connect on the people around him for whatever experience it would give as he subtly looked at the minds around him and through that practice found one he couldn’t ignore as he walked over to a small child sitting quietly in a corner.

“Hey kiddo, are you lost, need some help?” Ben asked, trying to sound kind as the small boy he spoke to looked up and nodded. “Alright, why don’t we see if we can find your parents then, okay? Let’s go somewhere a bit safer than a street for now, alright?”

Again the boy nodded and Ben took his hand and led him to a nearby shop he’d just left, explaining the situation to the owner inside and leaving them to watch the child as he went back out and ran around the area, stretching out connect until he found the frantic mind he was after.

“Hey there, I know where your kid is, he’s just this way,” He told the worried father out of the blue, getting a grateful yet confused look for the impromptu statement as he made up a lie to explain himself. “You look like him and you looked worried, it was an easy guess. Now come on.”

Without waiting he started walking back to the shop, leading the man behind him as they went inside, drawing the child’s eye away from the store owner he was playing with to his parent and running over into the man’s waiting arms where he was scooped up.

“Thank you so much,” The father said, giving a small bow to both Ben and the shop owner before looking at his son. “Say thank you now too, okay.”

“Thank you.”

“It’s no problem, happy to help.”

They exchanged a few more words before leaving, letting Ben get back to his day as new feelings began stabbing into him from that small meeting.

If he abandoned the world to its fate then he’d be abandoning people to die, billions of people, with many of them being children. It was easy to say he didn’t care when they weren’t around, out of sight out of mind, but as we walked the streets, was he really willing to leave so many to such a fate?

And if not then what did that mean? Rolling over for the gods so he could take what bits of strength for himself he could while letting them delay him for their own goals? It wasn’t like they were wrong that helping so many finish their jobs could benefit them and the world but helping the third tiers finish their jobs would delay him by weeks or months, possibly longer depending on if any of them had advanced variants to go through and he was sure that would be true of more than a few, even if he hadn’t gotten so lucky himself.

So was he willing to just be nothing more than experience for others if it meant he’d still be able to snag some growth for himself? Even if slowed, it would still surely help him on the way to his goals.

<THE GOD MYRIAD WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>

<THE GOD HELORI WANTS PERMISSION TO VIEW YOUR THOUGHTS AND SPEAK IN YOUR MIND. ALLOW?>

“...Deny.”

His feelings were a mess so he decided to give up on thinking as best he could, instead doing a few more hours of shopping for whatever interesting things he might find before heading home for the day, continuing to put off the problems of just what he should do in the future.

That little kid has unknowingly saved the world. Lol

The guilt is setting in, I hope Ben can give the world another chance, but also realize that he isn't alone and has people to lean on when things are tough.

*Darkest dungeon narrator voice* Gnawing uncertainty - the birthplace of dread.

Will the chapters go back to normal in four days

Luboš Hemala

Self-reflection is always hard.

SacredSteel

Ben is such a dad that seeing one crying child nearly made his resolve crack. Hopefully someone actually sees his turmoil and helps him through it.

Linkneo5

Honestly Im with Ben on this one. He should just build a dimensional ark at this point. You could argue that this world wouldnt have survived the last two waves without him. Hell he ended a wave early with his god of destruction act. I hope all these petty gods cause his heretic to level up finally.

Luboš Hemala

Too bad Ben's still behind in undestanding the chaos outside of universes. Could potentially make a trip to another galaxy a very short endeavor.

Luboš Hemala

I am surprised that Phixth is still trying. And I expected Anailia to speak to Thera about Ben.

Anailia's probably just looked on as Thera was very happy with the news and decided "Good for those two"

Carl Mason

She may have done during the night, but i don't believe Thera was awake when Ben left. It may come up once he gets back.

Carl Mason

Chapters will continue daily until 30 (31?) bonus chapters have been dropped. It was said during the poll post that it would be mid November, the 13th I think. Edit: yes: "the end of this mass release in november because I'm emotionally depending on that first day off on the thirteenth"

Isiah Debarros

I mean, if you say the thing about the gates, then maybe you can give them credit for it going smoother than normal but but his impact for the second wave is nowhere near the impact for first wave

Trey

i’m gonna go against the grain a bit and say that i actually don’t want ben to leave? i know a lot of peeps are saying he should cut and run and i do agree that it makes sense and he could feasibly do that, but the people he loves are here and i doubt everyone would just cut and run themselves. the loop of taking a few people each person he cares for about will just go on forever with those people wanting to take a few others and the same for those people. ben is too moral to just make a cut off happen in that situation. i understand his frustration and i think a backup escape hatch situation of running is fine, but if he puts most of his energy into either saving the planet or running away, i think he’s going to end up saving everyone on the planet he can either way and to do that he’s gonna need to work with the gods again. that’s just where my brain thinks the story will go but just my two cents! :) also side note i feel like the weird hell dimension could maybe be used somehow? i don’t exactly remember how it works but i do find it interesting that all gods have access to this dimension as a sort of garbage chute. what if there were a way to use it to the peoples’ advantage? i know they have ogilt but i think this is another possible avenue for mass universal travel?

Isaac Boyles

I suspect he won't actually leave when it comes right down to it, but if I were him I'd definitely start going through the motions of escaping anyway. That way it's useful 'just in case', AND it proves that he's serious

Adam Miller

I will say it seems odd the gods haven't gotten a mortal proxy to talk to Ben if they're still so insistent. I guess Myriad knows that Ben wouldn't take it well? I'm sure it's on the table if things get worse though.

Benji

Lol, the most thinking thinker possibly ever decides to stop thinking XD Thanks for the chapter.

Emily Gurnavage

It is seeming a tad odd. Its gotta happen soon, surely. Although I am greatly enjoying these chapters despite that 1 odd incongruity. Even if Myriad is insisting thatd be a bad idea, the other gods will only listen to him for so long before getting too impatient and... greedy? Demanding? Feeling as if they are owed and he is being lazy? Im too high to think of the word I should use there. Something usually used with royalty, perhaps. Anyway, Myriad has no individual authority, apart from the agreements about messing with each others believers and apostles and such. So I believe the others will eventually do what they believe needs to be done if the situation remains the same.

Emily Gurnavage

Meetings as Carl said, but he did also speak to Phixth in Myriad's realm at least once (wanna say twice) in a smaller group than the actual godly meetings. Only like Myriad and Helori were there or maybe Nare too but it wasn't an official meeting. Besides that though, no, dont think they ever had a private 1 on 1 or a time where they worked closely for an arc or anything.

Catherine

I’m surprised that Myriad or Anailia haven’t talked to Thera

Jonathan Thomas

Yeah I agree he will ultimately go back to trying to save the world. I don’t think he’s just going to rollover but it feels like he has been being willfully narrow minded this whole time. Especially in this chapter i feel like we are getting to see that cutting his losses and fleeing was never a real option. Truth be told I’ve hated the last few chapters be cause of how out of character it feels. Meaning I’m so used to Ben’s reacting by lashing out in defiant righteous indignation in grand spectacular ways when challenged like this. It makes seeing his will essentially shatter and choosing to run away from it all upsetting. I think it makes total sense and has been written very well so far but I’m chomping at the bit to see him rally. Also i really feel like people aren’t really comprehending what it means to choose to do nothing in this situation. Ben is acutely aware of just how much he can personally do to save people. I don’t think many would truly choose to watch idly as millions die. If anything i think this will result in him rejecting help from the gods and turning to chaos or something else for power. Either way i can’t wait for the resolution these chapters have been super frustrating for me so i can’t wait to get some satisfaction from it😂

Talon88

To awaken the third level of sacrilege Ben should go to the Gods realm that got on his way and mess it up, even testing if he can trap the God.

Emily Gurnavage

Someone pointed out in a different comment chain that Ben woke up and left before Thera woke up today. So the Gods could have spoken to her last night, and is waiting for Ben to return to bring it up.

Silverias

It's odd how the gods basically ignored the interference here when Myriad got in trouble for TALKING TO THERA to SAVE HER LIFE

Carl Mason

There is a long standing history of both Ben and Myriad being cool with other gods talking to him.

Adam Miller

Actually I just realized that Phixth is still trying, which makes it odder. Myriad could probably get Ben's god friends to give him space, but like you said the other gods don't care, and Phixth trying implies the other gods want to talk to him too.

Demolug

The nuance here is that Thera did not know myriad at the time, while Ben has(had?) a friendship with all of these gods (except Phixth, but as a negotiator with Ben, he kind of needs to be able to talk to him, so he gets a pass)

John Sanders

i like them for that exact reason how many MCs never buckle or yield and continuously lash out. it sounds so tiring, im actually enjoying him just wanting to give up

Popsleo

Wasn’t the issue that Thera had to pray to Myriad to reach him and that was what caused the blowback, but nothing really happened because it was done to save Thera?

Collateral_ink

I'm pretty sure the "infinite Hells" are this universe's version of hyperspace. They call it hell because they throw people in it to die, and while that might make it "hell" in function it doesn't mean that's what it actually is. If it is something like hyperspace, it means it can be used to escape, and get VERY far away. Even to another galaxy. Heck, it might even be how the demon gates work--we still don't know and the one time Ben transitioned through it the way he described it made it seem nothing like the gates we know.

Ashlynn & William Elmore

Honestly I think it's about time ben starts fighting gods. He already sees them as equal they already hate him so it's about time he just steps up there and just gives one of them the smackdown maybe not kill it but he should at least show up up there and smack one down and tell the rest of the gods you're treating me like an equal or I'm going to f*** you up.

Collateral_ink

I kinda want Ben to create a massive gate that leads to a new planet but enchant the gate with King of Sacrilege (or maybe the tier 3 version of it if he has it by then) to make it so no gods can pass through other than the ones he wants, and then simply let anyone that wants go through. They will get to decide what's more important: surviving, or feeding their gods' insatiable faith cravings.

Simon Andriessen

Oh thank Myriad I wasn't ready for him to give up on saving all these people just yet... somehow, with Ben, nothing sounds impossible.

Collateral_ink

It's less that he's still trying and more that he has no choice. If I recall, he's essentially supposed to be the spokesperson to Ben for all the gods that hate him, which is most, because unlike the others he is at least capable of pretending civility while trying to screw Ben over.

Sesharan

I know we all wanted to see the gods’ reactions to all of this, but the longer the arc goes on the more I like it the way it is. We only have as much information as Ben does, which is that every now and then the gods want to talk to him. That’s it. That’s all he knows. They could be calling to commiserate, or to beg him to get back to work, or to tell him that the other gods have given up and offered him a blank check… we don’t know, and neither does Ben.

Sesharan

Keep in mind that last we saw Sachel, just before the chimera test mission, she was off on a mission of her own that was supposed to take a while. She would have been one of the obvious choices to send to talk to Ben without potentially angering him.

Collateral_ink

Those are some pretty optimistic theoreticals you have there. My mind is conjuring things like, the gods that hate Ben are whipping up votes to have Ben thrown into Hell because he's gone dark. Or, A coalition rallying behind Eneth have launched theomachy against Anailia, Myriad, Nare, and Helori. Or, the least bad option, the Evil Death God has launched his assault on the heavens and they are desperately trying to beg the King of Sacrilege for help before it's too late.

Sesharan

Exactly! It could be my positive options or your negative options, and we don’t know which and neither does Ben. All he knows, in this moment of massive indecision, is that the gods want to talk to him.

Carl Mason

Both options equally possible, which is kind of the point that Sesharan is getting at. I really rather must say, I agree, I like this blind nonchalance. But I expect it probably isn't a theomachy, Myriad probably wouldn't give up for a few hours after asking once.

Jsk2003

I do not view this as Ben giving up, but rather that he’s finally taken stock and realized the gods of the world are not keeping their end of the deal so why should he? This is result of a reflection: A redirection. I am loving this new way of thinking: save the ones you love and the few you can, but do not lose yourself for the many.

Luboš Hemala

I miss Ben being his absolute best at skill grinding :-( And he didn't even try to go around the gods. So unlike him.

Titaniumtank

I find I'm really enjoying this arc. Slice of life can be fun. Additionally, The gods really seem to ask for too much without being willing to give anything back. We'll. Unless a mortal comes along and forces them to like Ben is doing.

Geekdumb

but as we(he) walked the streets,

Alex

Ben needs to focus on himself. This all comes down to him needing to kill the demon god. Thats the only thing that truly matters. Which also means that Bens personal strength is the only thing that truly matters. If he fails, they're doomed anyway. If he wins, they'll be fine. He needs to be selfish to be selfless and help the most people.
