Well, that was a freaking letdown.

While he still couldn’t say whether or not they’d done it, what he had found out was that none of them were home. Jake, Amy, and Yuzu had left the day before, sounding like they’d be gone for a few more, and by all accounts their teachers had left with them, meaning he couldn’t probe their minds for whatever he might find.

That left him making his way back to the shop, using the time he had left in the day to slip on his coat and begin the work that was materializing souls while at the same time making more of his mana bracelets and materializers as the time went on.

For the first, he was at least already seeing progress, with his growing job level showing him that all of the other ways he’d grown, with his levels of soul source, soul expansion, and soul affinity, were all more than enough to make up for the fact that he was taking things slightly easier to spare himself just a bit of pain and suffering.

<SOUL RESILIENCE LEVEL INCREASED>

<SOUL EXPANSION LEVEL INCREASED>

<SOUL AFFINITY LEVEL INCREASED>

Man, no matter how much it hurts that feels so good.

He felt more mana flood him with the new level of soul expansion and tied with the growth of his soul affinity, he was immediately able to create more than he’d been making only seconds before, not changing the strain he was under but improving the output to an extent that he couldn’t help but feel a bit better about giving in to help the gods.

Each time he leveled his soul affinity, soul expansion, and soul source he would instantly be able to make more and raise the speed he acquired job experience, shrinking the time it would take to help all of the third tiers while his thoughts ran wild.

Obviously, soul source was proving its worth, not only with his experiments to modify people's souls but also through the bands he was making as well as the materializers, and soul affinity had the fantastic benefit of lowering the mana cost of soul skills while at the same time making it easier for him to level and gain more but as great as both of those were it was his soul expansion that captured his imagination while he worked.

Perhaps it was one of the more straightforward of any of his soul skills but its effect was huge, letting him get an instant and significant boost of growth to his mana each time he raised it with one more fact making it feel all the more valuable. It was still only at the first tier.

He’d done that math and he knew by that point that each level of the skill was raising both his total mana capacity along with his regeneration rate by about ten percent of the volume he held at each level which by itself was huge, but what if he could push it further? Just what might he manage if he could get it to the second tier like so many of his other skills?

Hell, even if it just keeps giving me that ten percent each time it would be great if I got it there but if it would give me even more? I can only imagine my pool growing by fifty percent each level and with how significant an awakening is, something like that doesn’t feel out of the question, leaving the only issue being how I’d ever awaken it? Kind of feel like even trying something like that might leave me accidentally destroying my soul with however much I’d need to overfill it.

…Yeah, okay, since I’m only at the sixth level of it that will be a little while off but I think before I even begin to consider trying it I’ll need to get my soul resilience to the ninth level too. Hell, maybe even awaken that one first if I can, this is definitely a better safe than sorry situation.

<Why do I feel like I arrived to you thinking something crazy?>

Because you’re overly judgemental of your wonderful apostle’s goals and aspirations. So what’s up?

<There’s something I wanted to check for a moment. Ben, do me a favour and take off my church.>

Hmm? Okay, can do.

He slipped off the jacket and put a pause to his work, waiting to hear from his god about whatever that was about as the moments passed before the cube spoke up, pure pleasure in his tone.

<It looks like I’m getting a bit of faith from the souls in it.>

“Wait, seriously?” He asked, not bothering to keep the conversation to the confines of his head since he was alone.

<Less than I get from any of the trees you made during our bet with Helori but not by as much as you might think. I hadn’t noticed before since I actually do have a reasonable number of believers now along with all of the random, one-off prayers I get from some others thanks to how well you’ve advertised me with your work and the things you’ve made but this actually isn’t an insignificant amount. I don’t suppose I could get you to make me a few more?>

“No longer worried about the ethical implications of getting your faith in ways like this?”

<What ethical implications? These are souls that never truly lived with no minds of their own, why should I be bothered by it?>

“Hey, if it works for you it works for me. In that case, this should be a decent way to mix up the day a bit, give me a second.”

He slipped the coat back on while figuring out the basic structure of what he wanted to materialize, bringing forth a thick square tile that was about the size of the palm of his hand, filled to the brim with souls.

Compared to his jacket, doing that was significantly easier too, not needing him to arrange the crystal in a way that would be comfortable and instead focusing on squeezing as many into the space as was possible, ending with ten thousand in that one spot after expending everything he’d pulled into himself.

“Okay, now I’ve just gotta make enough of these to tile all of your churches here, in Anailia, and in Allfaith, unless you’ve gotten more since this last came up?”

<Just those three but seeing how many you managed to squeeze into that little thing and the total area of each church and I suddenly get the feeling there may be some hidden ethical issues I’m just not seeing.>

“Too late, this has me interested. Let’s see, I could also replace some of the shelves and seats I have in the Stonewall branch at least to fit in even more without obstructing visitors. Since I have the sub-basement set up as my emergency get-out-of-hell-free card I won’t be doing that one but I’ll be able to work on the rest of the space, even if it will take me a fair bit of time to make all of these, but then… Huh, I’ll be squeezing a positively insane volume of mana into your church by doing this, won’t I?”

<Yes, and?>

“And, it would be an absolute shame not to use it.”

I see absolutely nothing that could ever possibly go wrong with this.

Isiah Debarros

Oh this is going to be good

Isiah Debarros

Also, this would make his churches the best place for people with his awaken skill

Isiah Debarros

Soul expansion giving him 10% of his mana per level is huge

Voidsong

Materializing all the things using the insane amount of mana he's about to have access to

Michigo

Ben just got one of his totally bonkers ideas, didn't he?

TheCrazyDuck

Oh no, if Ben has some way of using all the mana those souls can produce it's going to be something absolutely insane.

demure

called it, on the souls generating faith!

Rizeres

Ben: "Look Miriad, turning your church into a super weapon is not as bad as you make it sound! All the other gods will be jealous for sure."

TheCrazyDuck

I just did some math, each of the souls he makes have half his stats, so 10.000 souls as of last time we saw his card make 3146.4 million mana every day. And Ben is planning to tile the floors and put them wherever else he can fit them in every church Myriad has.

Abdul Rehman Zia

I can see using the souls to turn every church of myriad into a super weapon of some kind. The weapon used during the first wave had 1000 spirits in it which equates to 10 million mana. Based on the amount of mana in his coat, I'm estimating about a trillion mana in each church. Even if he can't put all that mana through the same enchsntment that's still huge

Isiah Debarros

He should probably go out, then modify the existing hospitals so that they have all of those souls there and like have the generation be powering some sort of like healing spell and give all of the healers something that let them tap into that mana instead of the bracelets for them at least

SacredSteel

Myriads churches is about to become the most impenetrable sanctuaries on the planet with the amount of mana that can use used with Ben's scary repertoire of traps and barriers. Or Ben is about to accidentally turn one of the churches into a trial for Myriad.

Or vidan peled

That would be useful but would also absolutely kill their growth if they're not careful

Nyroe

It's actually kind of hilarious how just a few months ago in-universe, the world's best craftsmen had to enslave a bunch of elementals to make a super-gun for the invasion and now Ben could power dozens of them with little to no effort on his end.

TheCrazyDuck

Ben should be able to fit about 100 of these tiles every square meter, that's 314.6 billion mana every day. Disregarding everything else, if Ben enchanted these tiles with Thera's spirit empowering the spirits would be able to reproduce without any concerns.

Abdul Rehman Zia

This will probably make myriad the number 1 god, if you're only counting number of believers

Aloysius

Ah. My man is going towards Unnatural soul...

Enzer

Gonna be a lot of meetings once the other gods realize Ben can tile every surface of a church in faith generating plates. I know it would take absolutely ages, but I wonder how much faith Ben could generate if he built a cathedral sized church, but every single square inch of it held souls - the bricks, the support beams, the tiles, the sculptures and furniture, everything! Hmm... What happened to that Myriad prototype that Ben recovered? It's just sitting on display in one of the churches right? And Ben can imbue souls into compatible materials right? What happens if he just starts dumping souls into the prototype soul receptacle that's just sitting inside Myriad's church? The final version held an entire civilization plus a few gods, certainly the prototype could hold more than the 10,000 that the tile Ben just conjured up can.

Isiah Debarros

Forget like the super weapon angle think about what this could be for mages in general if he can make it so a building can have access to that much amount, but without that's not being used then considering how huge that level of mana is, he can make it so the people inside of the building can access that probably which would make it so they would be able to have like insane fortresses or like hospitals that never run out of mana

Isiah Debarros

Like imagine what the mages inside of a fortress with hundreds of millions of mana can do. Potentially creating buildings that are like super well defended because of the enchantments and that don't run out of mana while they're inside

SacredSteel

By definition his soul is from another universe so it would make sense

Ashlynn & William Elmore

There's a few ways this can go Ben can start turning myriad's churches into mana factories and Faith factories he can then connect to those buildings and start truly pumping obscene amount of mana through himself very easily maxing out soul expansion and probably Awakening it and connecting with that many individual souls most likely in the multi-millions of souls that should be enough to wake and deep connection maybe even hive mind and enchanting the structure to use the mana in certain ways will most likely create and legendary item being the church which should awaken him to third tier for divine enchanting.

Luboš Hemala

Is this the origin story of Ben's planetary defense system? Anyway, why just the tiles? Replace walls as well.

Person

What will he do with billions of mana per second? The mind boggles.

Demolug

I hope we’ll get to see the moment a soul mage lays eyes on such a church for the first time. Promises to be hilarious.

Lola

Ha! The other gods will be so jealous.

Alexander Semino

Probably because the tiles were originally made to contain skills extracted by connect and are thus suitible to house souls. Whilst the rest of the church is made out of stone which isn't capable of housing one.

Marquess

If he really tries to make the church power anything, it might finally push the limits of his enchanting. Back when the craftsman’s guild made the death ray, the biggest limiter was the durability of the enchantments. Given the ridiculous amount of mana a church made out of souls could output, even his divine enchanting is gonna get quite the stress test.

Marquess

It’s a shame so few can make enchantments durable enough to handle such power. It probably wouldn’t be all that difficult to make soul batteries capable of powering all kinds of weapons, if only they didn’t break.

Corvusamous

They didn't have the ring system or the enchanting modifier at that point but your point stand regardless

TBONEMAN

mech church sounds pretty cool

Corvusamous

The second one will be more entertaining since Ben is technically a soul mage

Corvusamous

I wonder if Myriad is only getting faith because they are based off Ben's soul so it wouldn't be scalable to the other gods

Corvusamous

That was like a full year plus ago in universe. From the first wave to after the end of the second

Corvusamous

But what if they also are really tough from all the faith constantly flowing through

Enzer

Hard to say, but I will note that he only indicated that the souls that were part of Ben's jacket, which is a church, were generating faith. That's why he asked Ben to take it off to make sure that Ben wasn't the one who was generating the extra faith.

Abdul Rehman Zia

The churches are already established, so replacing the whole building will make it count as a new church, in turn becoming less effective at gathering faith.

Hydrabogen

So, any reason Ben couldn't just sell these to the gods, in exchange for half the Faith (in the form of Minor Blessings aka stat increases) generated until the start of the third wave? Literally everyone wins if he does

Collateral_ink

Just the 10,000 souls in that one tile are pumping out 75,000 mana/second. That's far more than the spirits were putting out. I have no idea what he's going to enchant the churches to do, but whatever it is it will be impressive!

Collateral_ink

I've been waiting forever for Ben to create a flying castle. A flying church will do!

Collateral_ink

Sure, that sounds reasonable. And yet I guarantee that almost none of the gods would agree, because they are petty.

Greg Shields

The point about the Death Ray was what I was coming to post about. Wouldn't the mana available through this make the death ray viable? As I recall, the durability issue was just because of the damage it took when the one demon attacked it. Plus, as mentioned below, upgrades that Ben has brought to enchanting should mitigate any durability issues. I remember the mana (and the ethical issues with providing the mana by draining spirits) as the main hangup of the death rays. In theory, that should make them viable now to help defend many(/most/all?) the invasion points

Collateral_ink

I wonder if Ben could create the universe's first dungeon. Create a large structure of voidstone, enchant the interior to expand the space into an environment he crafts with challenges and puzzles, then add an enchantment with Thera's Charm targeted at demons to lure them in by the thousands and pump the whole thing up with millions of mana from souls. Over the years, adventurers would have to delve the dungeon to keep the demons from overpopulating it and causing a "break," but they would continue to draw in any loose demons on the planet if there are enough of them made.

Sesharan

So many interesting options for using that mana. Infinite mana font for anyone inside? Materialization of essential goods? Town-defending force field? Whatever it is will surely attract even more people and thus faith to the church. I’m sure Ben’s other god friends would be very grateful if he mailed a pallet or two of tiles to add to their churches, since he’s making the souls anyway.

Josiah

Can't he also make the souls think about giving faith to myriad or only fill up the souls with knowledge about giving faith to myriad like he did with the materializers? You gotta imagine that would boost the amount of faith they'd give and I'm surprised Ben didn't immediately think about that.

Demolug

I think I remember him saying that the skills he gives through soul surgery are similar to soul expansion. I he gave himself those modifications, had them reach level 9, and it somehow transitioned back to level 0, similar to what happened with his thought speed skills, that would be actual madness.

TheLostGolem

I'm just wondering what rarity the soul stuffed tile is tbh...

Phoenixdrop

Well super weapon time people

Rain

SOUL CHURCH LOL TFC

Rain

Good idea! He could maybe make slimes by putting souls into material enchanted with his manipulation skills

IdolTrust

Battle church. Now needs to make spacial enchants to make the church into a Tardis.

Collateral_ink

Oooo, random theory! Maybe the reason Yuzu, Jake, Amy, Uliel, and Vasta aren't there is because they went to the Unaffinity tower. Now, them doing another tower would just be kinda meh, but given that we just learned its the most dangerous of all towers, I have another theory. What if they get stuck inside and are at risk of dying? The gods don't have the power to actually alter the trials anymore. What if in order to try to save Yuzu and four contenders, they have to beg dear old Ben to break the trial open before they die?

Isiah Debarros

I would love to see it and I definitely think that his soul skills with merging other that soul source. The idea of how huge his mana capacity could get with his regeneration is kind of the insane

Carl Mason

The ethical feasibility is high, but the durability was due to the power of the magic overburdening the enchantments, not only from physical attacks to the item itself. The enchanting team was working to rebuild sacrificial enchantments every time it fired.

Luboš Hemala

Do I count it right that Ben would reach over 7k mana if he reaches Soul Expansion LVL9 and if he awakens and gains 50% per level, then something akin to 400k mana on LVL9?

Luboš Hemala

Honestly the soul-faith generation is a great find and if Ben offers it to the rest of the gods I don't see why they wouldn't just raise his skills to get it faster. Well, apart from spite. And slap in a condition that if they gain enough faith for a blessing at least twice that he would receive one. There, everyone benefits.

Corvusamous

That could be interesting but what if it turns out the gods hid it from Ben. That they've been trapped for a while off camera but the gods didn't want to risk losing Ben too, but also paying Ben might have been a factor

Corvusamous

It's probably really telling that Ben didn't take any time to note the rarity. He's been obsessed and knows that souls boost rarity pretty hard so it's probably just a middle upper ultra rare or some piddling that he makes 5000 of a day now

Corvusamous

All we would need is an advancement of charm magic to be selective. Maybe Ben could theorize one after some more soul experiments

nugitoBambino

oh man i was thinking of giving it legs so it could walk around a la howl's moving castle. Tardis is much smarter lol

Person

That's also without any 'inducement' like in the cubic forest. Throw in a little "pray to God X", and I suspect the generated faith would go way up.

Cole Armstrong

I wonder what Ben's new job option will be for this...

Dao of Fried Foods

Not if they don't know about it. Put an on/off switch and just wait till the next wave to turn it on.

Alex

The trees feel just as easy. Just enchant a couple nails and hire some people to nail them in. Don't even need Ben to do it.
