Time froze for him as it happened, his thoughts moving in a blur as he was knocked down and having an answer as to what had by all accounts killed him before he even hit the ground, cursing the gods, even as he struggled to find a solution.

Magic nullification of all things on the first floor, in the first fucking second? YOU ABSOLUTE ASSHOLES! God, I want you all dead so fucking much!

It was the only explanation, even if it was already a bad sign for how that floor would go. He may not have been wearing the church of Myriad but the defensive enchantments he’d placed on his new jacket should have been able to stop any regular attack, not shoot right through both them and the better part of his flesh, leaving only the question of how he was possibly supposed to survive that in the time he had left.

He didn’t know how long a person could live without a beating heart but by all accounts, time had to be short for him. There was nothing to pump his blood, nothing to circulate the vital oxygen his every cell needed to live, with options feeling slim. He could stretch seconds into minutes easily enough, all it left was finding a way to deal with it using the time he had.

…Yeah, I’m just going to casually deal with the loss of one of my vitalist of vital organs, I’m sure this will be fine. Myriad, if you’re listening up there, make sure you avenge me for this awful bullshit!

It was only one mind complaining though, the rest in his head had other, more important tasks. The pain was tremendous but experiencing and suffering through it was regulated to only ten of the ones in his head, letting the rest focus on how he’d overcome the present situation as all of the things he knew were pulled from his memories to try and arrange in some useful order.

Hoping for help was instantly out. While other magics wouldn’t be blocked off on the first three floors, meaning either life or light magic could have potentially saved him, Thera was likely way too far away to get to him in time to help, even with bind showing her the way, and Jake would need to teleport practically randomly to find him, meaning the two healers were out as options.

Then what about healing myself?

He still had his necklace, his failsafe for both death and hell, but he’d already activated it and all it would do was slow down the rate he’d die, it wasn’t something that could be used to regrow an entire missing limb, let alone a major organ.

Which means I’m adding ‘research how to improve the effectiveness of life and light enchantments’ to my very long, ever-growing list of tasks but until then, I need another option.

If healing himself wasn’t an option then what about remaking himself? He could materialize meat and plant cells, could he make himself something to act as a functional heart in place of the one he’d lost, at least until he could get some real help?

…Closer, but still impossible. My body would reject it instantly… Or would it? I already have one integrated body skill and I’ve already seen from the chimeras that getting one based around homunculi is possible which means if I do that then it might actually properly integrate into my body, could that be something?

…No, damn it, that won’t work either. I know the structure of a single animal cell and only a couple plant ones, even if my body could take them in, I don’t think it would be possible to arrange them in a way that would replicate the workings of a proper heart. I wouldn’t be able to make it process the proper stimuli, at best it would only delay my inevitable death for a moment. God fucking damn it! Who fires a shot the second a person enters the trial you goddamn stupid fucking bitch-

Another mind regulated to being angry at the gods with a few more joining it, even if others focused in on that one’s original line of thought. Making a proper, living heart was currently impossible for him but who said it needed to be a living heart?

I know people would occasionally get artificial hearts back on Earth if they were in enough danger and waiting for a real transplant, who’s to say I can’t manage the same thing? Something that will just pump the blood for me until I can get this fixed?

After all, he actually knew the structure of his body to an almost unnatural degree. He’d been disassembled in the life tower and with deep connection, he’d been able to see through the eyes of others who’d looked at him, both in there and beyond. Thera, the occasional light, life, and death spirit that would hang around her, and even both Lux and Vividus themselves when he’d been around either of them to train his skill a bit against their particularly alien and powerful minds or get some healing. He may not have known how he was built on a biological level but on a purely structural one? That was easy.

Which left him with a potential path forward and bringing the new question of how he’d actually pull it off. He could tell that whatever had struck him had disappeared out of his flesh, either being teleported away if it was a true piece of matter or else collapsing if it was the structure of a spell but that left him to take stock of himself the best he could, finding the results far from pleasant as he did his best to do a mental evaluation based on the pain he was in.

The front of the ribs had been destroyed as they passed through them but it looked as though the back had been left practically untouched, with whatever caused the damage vanishing before they could do any harm going out too.

A small blessing but one that didn’t extend to the damage sustained. Blunt force trauma wasn’t some simple thing, having a ball pass through his flesh was likely worse than having a knife with the way the damage would present itself. There were no clean cuts, only tears and a crushed pulp of meat and bone fragments left in its place, not the sort of thing he could use as a foundation when trying to make himself an artificial organ, meaning if he was going to do it, he needed to clean it up first.

…Nope, don’t like that option, think of another one.

Think of another one!

Come on brain, what’s the point of having so much raw intelligence if I can’t think of another one!

UGH, FUCKING FINE! STUPID FUCKING NO GOOD FUCK GODS AND THEIR STUPID FUCKING TRIALS AND HOW THE HELL AM I ALWAYS TREATED LIKE THE BAD GUY WHEN THEY MAKE SHIT LIKE THIS? GODDAMN IT, WHEN I GET OUT OF HERE I’M DOING WHATEVER I NEED TO TO AWAKEN MY FUCKING SACRILEGE-

A new mind lost to focus on hating the gods of that world while the rest did what they had to. If the wound as he had it was too messy then that just meant he’d need to clean it up to the best of his abilities and to do that, a lump of steel was pulled from one of his rings, its shape taking on the form of a hollow cylinder with a razor’s edge and before he could lose another microsecond to his anger and hesitation, he plunged the metal into his chest, strengthening it to cut away the damage that first attack had caused and reshaping it as it reached the correct depth to scoop away what had remained of his heart and ribs, regulating ten more minds to deal with the additional pain, all of them giving cries about when he’d finally gain pain resistance as a skill.

Cries the still-rational part of him ignored, focusing on the task at hand as mythril and more materials were pulled from his rings and shaped under his magics, made to imitate the parts he was aiming to replace and enhancing them in every way he could with the rapid enchantments he’d constructed and all of the magic materials he had to power it, forcing the end product into its place as it clamped down, slowing what bleeding there’d be to a trickle while holding still the rest of his muscle and sinew, not freeing him from the damage he’d taken but at the very least ensuring he’d live, even if the quick job had left his left arm a loss. Too much in that area was damaged beyond his means to be able to use it.

But I’ll live for now. He sighed to himself. Now to just survive this and then go get myself a new heart…

His minds were still swarming, ideas connecting to one another in a constant flood of connections with one made in particular at the thought, nearly making him yell out.

No, no I’m not doing that, that’s absolutely insane!

It was what he told himself at least, but through the denial, something different within his subconscious mind instead sent an appeal. His desire for power and strength and how, no matter how insane it might have been, losing his heart could potentially act as a new path to both if he was only willing to take a risk and experiment a bit.

…Damn it, fine, I have plenty of time to think about it. I just need to survive this first.

The trial had already fired one deadly shot, he just needed to get through whatever would come for him next.

Man, I'm really beginning to run out of time if I'm ever going to kill this guy off

I indeed agree that anti magic happening immediately the moment you step on the first floor is bullshit. The reticence to not warn people is also bullshit for the sake of it. I'm back on the Ark idea man. God's don't deserve help. Most of them anyway

Alice_Because

Now, did everyone get their hearts exploded first thing, or did someone, somehow, set something up specifically for Ben?

Vorquel

Magic nullification shot to the heart? No way thats random. There's treachery afoot

Luboš Hemala

Nope, Ben is here to stay ;-)

ReadingObsessed

Is...is he going to make a phylactery?

Eli Loeb

Cyborg Ben?

Twmmy

Please for the love of anything, let him have some form of revenge against the gods after this one. Talking is good and all, but heads need to roll.

Atila M

Is it time for Ben to shift his body with one of his clones ?

Sylas Varga

He's gonna turn himself into a cyborg!!!!

Atila M

He need to transplant his soul. He technically don't need anything else from his body wich is already an homunculus created by life and light gods.

Logan

Tftc

aaab1422

This is too cruel to be normal it's definitely a trap set specifically for Ben.

Peter Jørgensen

I always knew Ben was a heartless bastard

Jason Scott

It's a pissed off god that's about to lose a vessel, follower, or child. Then B is gonna find his way into that gods realm and awaken god slayer mode. It's that or the teleport guy got free and is super pissed and doesn't realize hes about to FAFO.

Atila M

Difficult to say. His study of the golem body was not much described.

Monkofmimmir

This has to be an assassination attempt by a god. It's completely unbalanced, the only other possibility is a demon snuck in somehow and messed with it but that seems deeply implausible.

Isiah Debarros

Yeah, I'm a be honest. I know that they're not the smartest and some of them are actively dumb. I just don't understand because a whole bunch of God should be watching so anything obvious can't be done also we know that they have to have non-attribute magic in their domain for them to be able to interfere probably and consider, considering the fact that they're stingy as hell when it comes to their resources. I can't see the logic. In doing something like that unless it's like a final fuck you.

Isiah Debarros

I don't see why he would need to he should be able to be healed restoring organs isn't that hard for the people he has with him

Michael Wilson

Or at least steal the clone’s heart and arm. I don’t think it’s viable for Ben to trust Thera’s aunt to make a new body for him but he could copy the chimera process if he wants to upgrade his organ(s) instead of just replacing them with duplicates. …or just find a demon, kill it, and then steal its organs to integrate.

Sammot

Okay I still think either Ben is just insanely unlucky, or there was tampering!

Atila M

It was stated that Thera and Jake was too far away and I doubt Jake is good enough to heal fatal injury.

Kaihwa

I feel like this chapter is more upsetting even than any other one. Like wtf. My man's getting murdered out here. Constantly. He shouldn't be getting merc'd first second stepping into a trial. Even Galwax wasn't that bad. And we all hate him

Isiah Debarros

Jake probably isn't but he should have the levels to theoretically be able to regrow the arm at least and Thera should be able to regrow his heart if they meet before he decides to do his experiment

SacredSteel

İ am surprised he didn't try actualizing first than resort to a mechanical heart.

Isiah Debarros

I mean that's true and all but the towers are supposed to be death traps and considering a hell that which ever God it was would have to pay if anyone found out it doesn't make any sense especially considering the new deal

demure

The birth of cyborg/artifact/mecha ben.

Twmmy

Yeah.. but this whole story is about petty, spoiled almost children like gods. They have been worshipped for hundreds of years without anyone resisting or even questioning them. Then one mortal starts to push back and disagree over and over. Even when these gods have planned his death or threatened it. There has been zero collective punishment towards the gods who did such. Imagine a spoiled brat who has never been told no, then amplify that by a thousand. They dont seem to care at all, cause who will punish them? Only time it happened were when they gave the system to demons(well not rly, but the demon village bit). Ben needs to try out the 'horror show', Myriad thinks he might be capable off in their realm. And hopefully awaken Sacrilege (=

Aaron

He should make magitek nanites

Brandon Yarberry

As soon as I knew the weakness of my flesh, I craved the certainty of steel...

Emily Gurnavage

He has still never actualized in the mortal plane, so idk if his heart is the time to test it lol. It took a fuck-ton of effort to actualize in the gate-network even and that was a piece of chocolate.

Emily Gurnavage

If he decides to keep a fake heart of some sort like he is possibly thinking, then I could see him gaining that title lol.

SacredSteel

He actualised Force on his body when fighting the puppeteer demon and I believe he tried to actualize an apple in the mortal realm. İt just become a transparent blob or something like that. His success rate is low but it's something he done before and you know the saying necessity is the mother of all innovation. He might have finally cracked the code and learn how to properly actualize

GreatCabbage

This has to be another assassination attempt. Even for a tower trial, this seems a bit much out of the gate

Thando vanika

All hail BEN the omnissiah, the first and only god of machines bear of a 1000 titles and destroyer of worlds!!!

Thando vanika

To be fair all the other trials weren’t any less lethal this one is just impossible to predict how it’s going to kill you. Fire tower… well theirs only so many ways people can die to that. none affinity only the gods could know

Piotr

What? Demonic body is awakening!

Alex

Materializing is easy. Actualizing is difficult and it's not certain he can manage. Unlikely even. Materializing a new heart was pretty much guaranteed to work, no need to risk everything.

Cyaneer

Should have went for the head

Phoenixdrop

Yeah this literally has to have been a assassination attempt by some god or goddess and I can’t wait for Ben to go up to their realm and then force them down to the mortal plane into one of their followers or something and then kill them to get that sweet sweet awakening

Atila M

He don't really need his head. His brain has loose most of his function since he awaken unartural mind.

Cole Armstrong

That's true. The image on the tower door did make it seem like you might get immediately beamed by an attack. Though, I admit a magic nullification attack was definitely unexpected. On the bright side, there probably will not be magic nullification on the next two floors... though Ben probably knows to be on better look out now

Cole Armstrong

Are magic nullification and anti magic the same? Or two different skills/spells that happen to do the same thing

Mootant

"from the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel." -Ben Heph (probably)

Corvusamous

I love the writing for the POVs of the minds lost to sacrilege and pain

Evan Cathey

So this has to be either an attack aimed specifically at Ben or this just feels like bad writing. The towers are supposed to be challenges not outright instant death. All of the other towers are things that could be worked around as long as you had a high enough level of magic in their element even if you didn't have the right spell or ability. This feels like there is no way most non affinity mages could survive this without having life affinity. Even Ben's solution of using materialization is not really something most or any nonaffinity mages would have as it's supposed to be a skill that represents the pinnacle of ability in an affinity, nor would most mages be crafters. As a trial that could be aimed at anyone it makes little sense.

TheCrazyDuck

Maybe one of the non-affinited gods feels threatened by his rapid growth.

TheCrazyDuck

Honestly the gods might accidentally give him the title before the trial is even over.

Cole Armstrong

People with the general awakened non affinity. skill can probably easily detect that attack. Stuff like this is probably why that skill is important for this tower. Considering Ben himself has not yet had the though of interference, the idea of interference has fallen in likelihood imo

Toasty

Sooo, I could be wrong, but wasn't there something blocking god's watching the trial? Wasn't there something during Galwax tower that myriad couldn't watch what Ben was doing?

Toasty

Sooo, what would happen if Ben made himself a heart powered by a shitton of souls? Wouldnt that also negate the Problem he had about his connect skill needing to reach out, so he could cheat himself to a nearly infinite (or at least a fuckton of) mana?

Evan Cathey

I doubt that. If the whole point of the trial in this room was to dodge one spell then it wouldn't be a good trial. If the point was to sense and dodge spells there would be multiple spells flying till you left the room. As it is though nothing else has happened in the room so that one single spell is the whole point of this room's trial.

Brian

I think bot being able to see Galwax’s tower was because it was his, and he was not present. Presumably any of the gods associated with the nonaffinity tower can see inside and do a ‘viewing party’. Though I think there was still restriction on communication between gods and participants?

Arson Void

That was specifically because galwax hadn’t given permission to the other gods to view the trials, but I imagine that permission was granted when it comes to the towers

*Breaking News Tonight* Author Discovers cliff hangers, readers despair across the nation

Carl Mason

So far. He is thinking at max speed currently. Time is effectively stopped right now. There may be more spells or objects flying around right now. The main issue is how immediately he was hit. A proper challenge would drop him in the room give him a second to see what was around and then try to kill him. This is either deliberate or a HUGE coincidence, along the lines of "no, i didn't do anything, he just happened to spawn in right on top of a bomb."

Joshua

Nooo way that's meant to be the trial

Collateral_ink

That better be an assassination attempt; and if it isn't, some gods need to die for designing it that way, regardless. Who knows how many that thing has killed over the millennia.

Riley Sampson

He actualized a board, and force on that board, to slow his fall when the immortal teleported him into the sky

max grok

So, it appears fairly obvious that there has to be something going on here. None of the other towers we've seen so much as attempted to harm you before you moved in a certain direction for some time, and in two out of three cases the corresponding danger was obvious minutes before it became relevant, whereas in Dark the blinding spell itself at least gave ample warning of sensory trickery. Here, the attack arrives immediately and in a way that completely bypasses magic barriers, at a point in time when people are completely distracted due to forced teleportation and being suddenly split up. This does not make sense for a trial that is supposed to test a scholarly archetype who is traditionally a back-line function in a party, especially not in a trial explicitly meant for, among other things, dedicated barrier mages.

max grok

The arguments brought forth also don't make much sense to me. First of all, the fact that the hint on the door could've indicated an instant attack does not justify the form of attack and level of inevitability. This holds all the more true since these hints are meant to be helps for people who have already done multiple towers, it has to be realistically possible to defeat the challenge without ever even realizing there is a hint in the first place. Also, I doubt magic nullification of all things is possible to easily detect as an incoming attack, in fact unless I'm severely mistaken we already had it outright confirmed that it messes with Mana Sense as well as direct spells. Lastly, preemptive defense measures of a non-affinity Mage would be magic barriers, crystallized Mana or similar things, all of which nullification immediately, well, nullifies, regardless of technical skill. This makes such a challenge the absolute worst thing possible to be hit by without warning for the exact Mage that is supposed to take this trial. Plus we already know that one doesn't have to be that specific kind of a Mage, several gods have confirmed it's supposedly beatable for others as well. So, I can see something like this with prior warning on a team floor, where you are supposed to have several people with different approaches, but on a split floor as a surprise? Seems impossible that's intended.

Scott

Even better, that God is there in the tower and in such a way that the other Gods don't know their location. As such, Ben gets to kill them with no repercussions because no one knows that the God is there. No witnesses.

Isiah Debarros

Ya they should all be able to see and these fives are important enough that any bullshit just wouldn't make sense for anybody to try

Isiah Debarros

I think the thing that everybody got to remember, is that even the gods that like hate Ben are willing to use him

Isiah Debarros

So considering the fact that he's hasn't finished strengthening all of the tier 3s I don't think any godly assassin are a foot. And doing anything with the tower would be to obvious and noticeable even if most of the gods don't like him he is strengthen the tier 3s which is something that they value and beyond that the others could very easily die and that would be a huge problem for the world and there's the fact that I don't think any of the gods hate him enough to fuck themself over to kill him

Corvusamous

Yes, a logical god would kill Ben. A petty tyrant that isn't fond of upstarts though would. It's also completely possible that the tower was supposed to give the most intense wound that it "thought" the delver would survive so everyone else has a flesh wound right now

Isiah Debarros

I mean the tyrant part is true but the if any of the antagonistic gods were like that they would probably already be dead at this point. Like even the most stupid gods we have seen at least respect the other gods and Ben getting killed by the actions of a dumb god seems like a good way to piss of a lot of gods even the ones that only see him as something to be milked for all he is worth want him alive to work for the world

Carl Mason

From the description of the door, it sounds like the "few dozen squares" are emitters that shoot something or possibly cover to hide behind or also possibly switches to flip to shut down the attacks and enable safe movement, the "numerous lines" are lines of fire to avoid, the "five distinct points" are the moderately safe starting points, and the "central circle" is the safe end point. Which suggests that he did not come in where he should have, whether by intervention or by Accident(TM) and was immediately injured. I don't believe that it should be possible for challengers, normally, to get hit immediately.

Corvusamous

An example of an antagonist god that didn't respect other gods was the one that wanted to kill Ben and others by assigning them to the most dangerous invasion points. Wait was that actually their apostle that did that? I'm forgetting. Yeah if it was their followers that tried to kill Ben and all the god did was defend their believer then you're 100%

Carl Mason

His body still requires a brain, even if he does not to think or function as an individual. Destroy his brain and, unless he can fix it before his spirit wanders off, he is dead.

Carl Mason

At the very least, until he can recover enough, he needs to close up his vascular system, probably also his lungs, restore bodily integrity, and regain blood flow. Once he does that, he can plan for a cyborg body or work toward pushing his Demon Body skill or whatever other course of action. He did that one guy's arm, so he has a place to start with "cybernetics" (even if a heart is not the same as an arm, and it is not). He could do it, even without a great understanding of how the golem body works.

nugitoBambino

the only other explanation I'd be good with is if the chances of this happening are so infintesimal that it was ignored by the developers. But this is actually proving that luck is a real attribute in the universe and Ben's is actually negative haha

nugitoBambino

yeah once he's going full magic cyborg he can like, make bones from rainbow mana and captured souls. He just really needs to explore this skill-based magi-tech body development. Honestly, you just need to be careful not to lose your senses, but Ben can connect with those flesh-body duplicates of his, so there's not much stopping him from being a phylatery lich minus all the usual drawbacks (no skin, no senses, life becomes dull as the negative energy that powers your consciousness infuses through you). Heck those dimensional enchanted objects are pretty much demi-planes that he could trap the shit out of. surround his phylactery in magic-nullifying metal and indestructible metal and he's g2g

nugitoBambino

@Mootant I actually burst out laughing at this. MVP comment of the past month oh my gosh

Collateral_ink

When Ben's soul showed up in this universe, the Universe went, "Quick, kill it! Kill it with fire!"

Abdul Rehman Zia

It was directly stated that 5 people without the complete non-affinity skill could still pass the trial, although it would be difficult. Remember the gods gain more faith based on some function of the difficulty of the trial and how far you get through it. They would gain less faith if the trial instantly killed you when you entered.

Michigo

His soul reaching out is bad (cause it makes him more vulerable), but the real reason he doesn't want to depend on them is the enemy he intents to face: the demon god. You know, the overwhelmingly powerful god of SOULS and survival (i bet he aquired additional domains by eating up other gods). He doesn't want to build his powers/skillset on something he probably can't rely on in the one fight that really matters.

Michigo

"Oh shit! My soul is about to wander off... oh wait, i can just condemn it up to my favorite Cube while i keep my body mostly alive by cooking some enchantment + materialisation cocktail up".

Michigo

If that's the case said god will soon learn that his feeling was really really on point.

Joseph Smith

Can't wait to see if Ben goes to my stark and makes a suped up magic heart

Dani

Are we finally getting it? The 3rd tier sacrilege, after Myriad knows how many chapters? Given that it can’t be how the trial is supposed to work, that only leaves the option of a god manipulating it.
