I think the black face in this movie was acceptable to society at the time because they weren't making fun of or putting down black people. They were making fun of Downey Jr's character's stereotypical views of how black people act. The joke was on him, not black people. It's kind of like Eric Cartman. He's very racist, but we all know Eric is morally garbage. It doesn't make the people he hates look bad, it just makes him look bad. (not in any way saying Downey Jr's character is as bad as Cartman, just using a different kind of example)

I get what you saying. Totally agree with you on what Rob was doing, so maybe that was why he never got any flack for that.
