My cousin watched this with me and she said that we are alike in how we be thinking we know the answer and be right when guessing the movie. She was over here telling us to be quiet and just watch the movie. Love this reaction and love this movie!

My number 1 romance movie. So many words and feels for this movie.

This is considered one of the most romantic movies of all time, but it's also been criticised by some people who think it portrays a toxic and borderline abusive relationship. Like when Noah literally threatens to kill himself if Allie doesn't go out with him and Allie physically abusing Noah. Or the fact that they fought ALL THE TIME. And of course Allie cheating on her fiancé who is actually a very nice guy. I agree that it's problematic that it's portrayed as romantic but I still love the movie. Also, older Allie and Noah's love is so beautiful and pure, yet it's sad at the same time. This is Nicholas Sparks' first published novel but the third film adaptation. Other movies based on his novels are Message in a Bottle (1999) starring Kevin Costner, Robin Wright & Paul Newman, A Walk to Remember (2002) starring Mandy Moore, Shane West, Peter Coyote & Daryl Hannah, Nights in Rodante (2010) starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane, Dear John (2008) starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum, The Last Song (2010) starring Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth & Greg Kinnear, The Lucky One (2012) starring Zac Efron & Taylor Schilling, Safe Haven (2013) starring Josh Duhamel & Julianne Hough, The Best of Me (2014) starring Michelle Monaghan & James Marsden (who plays Lon in this one), The Longest Ride (2015) starring Britt Robertson & Scott Eastwood and The Choice (2016) starring Benjamin Walker & Teresa Palmer. There are currently 4 more movies in development. The film rights to The Notebook were acquired by New Line Cinema in 1996 with Steven Spielberg set to direct, who wished to film it with Tom Cruise as Noah. Spielberg had to back out due to other commitments. Several other directors were linked to it before Nick Cassavetes was chosen in 2002. Britney Spears was the second choice to play Allie. This would have been a reunion for Britney and Ryan, who were in The Mickey Mouse Club together on Disney. The footage from her audition was put on sale on eBay for $1 million in May 2021. You can see it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/popculturechat/comments/17epeqa/britney_spears_audition_video_for_the_notebook/. Of course she's nowhere near Rachel McAdams but I think she was pretty good for a rather inexperienced actress (she had done Crossroads which I recommend if you haven't seen it). Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, Claire Danes, Scarlett Johansson, Ashley Judd, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Kate Beckinsale, Mandy Moore, Elsa Pataky and Jaime King were also considered/auditioned for the role. Rachel McAdams auditioned for the role during another movie's premiere. She was given the script just a day in advance. The scenes used during her audition included Allie and Noah's argument at the end after Allie and her mother return from their morning drive. You can see her audition here (where she is actually reading with Ryan Gosling who had already been cast): https://youtu.be/_XfUUYK7Gkg?si=3GWpsmDxEb7lRX5G. George Clooney was orignally supposed to play young Noah while Paul Newman was supposed to play older Noah. Hayden Christensen was also considered for the role. Nick Cassavetes wanted Ryan Gosling because he wanted someone unknown and not "conventionally handsome", as funny as that may be. Bradley Cooper was considered for the role of Lon, which eventually went to James Marsden (from Hairspray, Enchanted, 27 Dresses, X-Men, Superman Returns, The Butler, Sonic the Hedgehog etc.). In spite of having an insane amount of chemistry, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams did not get along at first (which probably made their performances better to be honest) and Ryan even tried to have het eplaced. Cassaveted staged an intervention and they eventually worked through their differences. They even dated for a few years. In 2005, they won Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards and they recreated the kiss when accepting the award. It's one of my favourite videos ever and I always go back to it. But it's also a little sad because Paul Walker is one of the presenters 💔 You can see it here: https://youtu.be/CC_WUNYux_A?si=BsRfwkJtjvjK2KA-. Random fun fact: Ryan and Rachel were born in the same hospital; St. Joseph's Hospital in London, Ontario. Ryan Gosling prepared for the role by living in Charleston, South Carolina (where it was filmed) before filming began. He rowed the Ashley River and built furniture every day for two months. He actually built the kitchen table in the house Noah built for Allie. Rachel McAdams also spent time in Charleston before filming to familiarise herself with the surroundings, along with taking ballet & etiquette classes and having a dialect coach to learn the southern accent. The "after 7 years" Allie and Noah scenes were filmed first and then they went on a Christmas break. Ryan Gosling had to lose 20 lbs and the beard he'd had. He and Rachel McAdams were rather shy and unsure around each other in the "after 7 years" scenes which actually made it more realistic. The scene where Noah and Allie row through the lake filled with swans almost didn't happen because the production company was worried about the birds being untrained. To solve the problem, they bought a bunch of hatchlings and raised them on the lake so they were used to the area. Also, Allie's blue dress (which Kobe Bryant would later buy for his wife) and shoes during the rain scene started to fall apart during filming due to the water. Gena Rowlands, who played older Allie, is director Nick Cassavetes's mother. Her character suffers from dementia in the movie. In June 2024, Cassavetes reported that she now has dementia at age 93. The photos of older Allie and Noah through the years are actually of Gena Rowlands and her husband John Cassavetes, with James Garner's face photoshopped over John's face. When we are first introduced to young Allie and Noah, they are wearing the same colors worn by the older versions of them in the beginning of the movie. This was to give us a clue about who they were. The second love scene with Noah and Allie was originally longer and more explicit. It had to be edited in order for the movie to keep a PG-13 rating. The scene where Noah drives up and crashes into the gate of Allie's summer manor was a mistake. Cullen Moss (guy with Allie on the ferris wheel) and Paul Johansson (Allie's mother's ex-boyfriend) both starred on the TV show One Tree Hill. Paul was a regular for most of the series as Dan Scott and Cullen was a recurring character called "Junk". In 2015, it was reported that a television series was in development by The CW, but as of December 2023, no further news has been revealed. A musical opened in 2022 at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, with music and lyrics by Ingrid Michaelson. It later opened on Broadway in the spring of 2024.

Absolutely one of my favorite movies. So excited you finally watched this

Audrey

I’d love to see you watch Perks of Being a Wallflower

Such a beautiful movie. This movie is based on the book by Nicholas Sparks. He has a bunch of books and a bunch are made into movies. All of his stories are romantic and have some sort of tragedy. There is a sequel, called The Wedding. It's a book but hasn't made it to a movie yet.

I'd love to see you watch Safe Haven. It's another Nicholas Sparks Sparks story, but it is not as slow paced. There is some degree of a thriller element.

Nay

They were together for a while after this movie!
