Behind the Scenes: Ashton (and Ripley) (Patreon)

I had a crystal clear image of who Ashton was and how her story with the Changeling would evolve. I did not, however, have any idea what Ashton would look like. 

These are just a few of the versions of Ashton I created--there were a lot more that will never see the light of day--as well as some thumbnails for her first illustration! 

Originally, Ashton was going to have long hair. That was the only thing that was clear to me in the beginning. As I attempted to draw her design, though, she had other ideas. I couldn't get the idea of short hair out of my head, and then I sketched the version of her with her hair in a bun and I started to get a better idea of what her face looked like. From there, I drew like a madwoman in my sketchbook until I finally settled on her character design. 

Also, as an added bonus, there is a little sketch on the first picture of Ripley's first design concept! She started out with wavy hair and a lot more piercings! 

Ripley was a character I had in my head from the conception of my channel, and her design came almost as quickly. Now, looking at that sketch, I have no idea who that character would have been--she definitely isn't the Ripley we have now!
