So for Kaz's backstory: Kaz and Jordie come from a small town where their father had a farm. When their father died, Jordie sold the farm and they headed to Ketterdam for a bigger and better life. In Ketterdam, Jordie got swept up in the idea of becoming a mercher, trading money, high risk, high reward. Jakob Hertzoon (who Pekka Rollins pretended to be) heard of this, and scammed Kaz and Jordie out of the money they had from selling the farm. He had Jordie believe that if Jordie gave him the money, in a week they would be even more rich. But after that week, Jakob of no where to be seen, and Kaz and Jordie were left on the streets. Since Kerch is an island, plague is a big deal, and firepox spreads like crazy. It killed Jordie since he had no where to quarantine from it, and Kaz was infected and thought to be dead (which is why he was among the dead bodies in the harbour). But Kaz actually survived and...well, when he woke up, it was quite traumatic to 1) find his brother dead and 2) be surrounded by dead bodies floating miles off shore. That's why he says the both of them died but only he was reborn. He sees Pekka as the reason Jordie couldn't stay healthy and live, thus sending Kaz on a mission of avenge his brother, and why Kaz has haphephobia, the fear of being touched or touching others, especially skin to skin, or wet skin. It's also why he wears the gloves, and why the other crows subtly know not to be close to him. Once you know he doesn't touch others/others don't touch him, you can really pick up on great acting for these characters! Look out for it in future episodes, especially with Inej.
