I work in addiction and yes, opiates can lower one's arousal, libido, and actual sexual performance. It suppresses the nervous system and both opiate use and trauma can make someone feel alienated and disconnected from their emotions and from other individuals.

On your question about opium, yes. I dunno about pure opium cuz I wasn't like.. deep in the trenches of addiction, but the main factor I got addicted in the first place was my CPTSD not letting me sleep for 3-5 days, so I was desperate and remembered how sleepy you get on opiates from my surgery. Because of the type of painkiller it is, it shuts everything down like your wakefulness, arousal, overactive brain, appetite and G.I system unless you're super dopamine deficient and take a specific dose, then it will increase your functionality temporarily. And while it doesn't completely put everything to a standstill, while it's in your system, it can make you not care about anything but relaxing/sleeping so particularly men have lower responsiveness while it's in their system. Thing is, it only lasts a few hours, so if he's taking it at night, it shouldn't be affecting him during the day. They probably meant his PTSD makes him not generally romantically interested in anyone. Hard to sustain relationships or stay aroused when your brain is bullying you into depression 😅 when my symptoms were getting worse, I couldn't even bring myself to remember to call my partner, let alone show interest, and I started to get agitated over everything, so we just fought over things that didn't matter until neither of us cared to fight anymore and became like a friend dynamic instead, and this is something I'm told is quite common, that once someone experiences a trauma they can't process, their social relationships spiral first, because we basically become self-involved and end up on survival mode of the Maslow scale. All we can focus on is functioning. Ironically, even though we turn to drugs and alcohol to stop the spiraling, we still feel in survival mode, because the drugs make it so you can only focus on getting through each hour 🤔 so it's almost worse if we end up self-medicating and sink deeper in the depression pit. It's why there's such a big push rn for standardized addiction therapy, because if you can stop it early, you can save so many lives because it's almost a guarantee that addiction will kill you, whether from suicide or overdose trying to avoid suicide, and the goal of addiction therapy is to actually attack the "why" of how we got started self-medicating in the first place, rather than only treating the symptom, which is the drugs/alcohol. I recommend the books "the body keeps the score" "realm of hungry ghosts" and "untangling trauma and addiction" if anyone wants to learn more about how closely your brain ties these together, it's very interesting and changes your whole perspective from "addiction is a choice" to "addiction is a symptom and mental illness" and creates more understanding and empathy for others and yourself if you struggle with addictive behaviors (such as food addiction, alcohol, drugs, or the sneakier stuff like playing video games, porn, sex, or eating things that you shouldn't be eating or other self-harming behaviors) Also not sure if it's written for us to like him but I quite like the Irish copper >- >; he's cool lol
