Shenmei, Diddy of the not!AncientChina

Chels

Well I eat my hat in regards to the "Shi" in their names 😅 I was thinking of the second halves of their names when I said before they don't sound all that similar, but I didn't consider the Kanji potentially being the same and representing a clan. All this who's kid is who's stuff is making my head spin 😂 But some interesting things of note. The environment of the fox village looked more Japanese than Chinese, and they used Shinto priest/priestess kimono and hakama, and did a very Shinto ritual so it feels like they took Maomao to a country based more closely on Japan. Not to mention the Tanuki reference. (While they do exist in other parts of Asia, they have different names, so I feel like they would've translated it to "racoon dog" like they turned kitsune to "fox") Also, when Maomao called Shisui/Loulan a tanuki, the reference is to the Tanuki of folklore, who are sneaky thieves and tricksters that use leaves to transform their appearances, so saying she used costumes to transform. Kitsune were also thought to be shape-shifting tricksters, but kitsune had one base appearance, whereas Tanuki could even change genders and replicate people, or change to all ages. Our European folklore about changelings that the Fae replace people with, the Japanese folklore have similar instances where people go missing and then come back different, come to learn they were replaced by a Tanuki
