It's cool seeing yall talk about the dynamics kids have with their parents as you compare them to your own children and parents. I have to admit that when I saw you announce that you were going to be having your third child within a minute of saying that you were going to be watching Takopi I knew that things were going to get rough, but that you'd also have a close perspective on these kinds of relationships. Just three more episodes to go, good luck!

you guys should start grand blue after this! hilarious anime slightly better than konosuba in my opinion, it'll be wonderful since the current scedule need a heavy comedy show!

Amazing episode, the eerie constant feeling of not knowing when shit is gonna hit the fan was so intense. They really emphasized the idea of "put yourself in their shoes" like I said before kids are kids, they are by nature blameless but proper nurturing but also punishment and discipline is the parent's duty neglecting it turns to this which is the saddest part. Too much discipline No nurturing -> azuma Too much punishment and lost love and nurturing -> marina completely neglected -> shizuka Amazing discussion as always I cant even begin to know how the next 3 episodes play out. is it really going to just be "ill go back to planet happy and reset everything ive done and just leave shizuka alone"? That would be a morbid moral of a story.

I love how I just commented recently about kids having to learn empathy, and how often they are left to learn the hard way, and Takopi kinda goes through what Marina might've if she had lived and killed Shizuka. It's such interesting writing to see what could have been. Also, something that makes me a little sad to think of is imagine if Marina being confronted by her mom wasn't Takopi? Like in an alternative reality, imagine if Marina were to actually make good friends, learned empathy, began finding happiness at school and she picks up new fun behaviors and then goes home to be beaten and accused of being someone else. Like, if this was reality, we wouldn't see our kid acting different and think "you're a doppleganger." So changing the context, it goes from "aww the mom noticed" to "wow.. the mom just beat the shit out of her daughter for being happy and acting like her friends/weird" 😬 the Shizuka scenes were so hard to watch from an empathy level, but for me, Marina's scenes hurt me especially because it's more similar to my situation growing up. I really like your guys' discussion and perspectives on this show though. I don't think I could handle watching this without you guys lol this is a really hard show. Insightful and interesting, but so hard because it really does cover real situations. Even Takopi feels like a symbol of innocence of children and the loss of it. His ignorance really resembles a very small child's level of understanding, and expecting a really small child to know how to handle any of this is just.. they can't. It's not there. Even Azuma, Shizuka, and Marina were just kids trying to find resolutions and solutions to problems in the only way they know how. 😢 even up to my teen years, I was so emotionally underdeveloped because of my household and things happening to me, and I did horrible things to just try and deal with it, and I was relatively mature for my age, so children dealing with this level of trauma really hurts me to think about. Also, I'm SO GLAD you recognized Azuma's treatment as abusive rather than "she's trying to do what's best for him" or something.. this is one of the quieter areas of abuse and it's often praised or justified even though it is just as damaging as being beaten if not worse and more dangerous simply because we are social creatures. We are the most resilient when it comes to survival and physical pain, but emotional pain derived from not being accepted by your "tribe" can easily break someone. No amount of support I get will ever erase the moment I revealed I was going to go to university (the first of my family) and my father said it's a waste of money because I was going to fail. That feeling of being given up on when you're trying your best is sooo much more evil than if I just got punched in the face. So I totally get why Azuma folds as easily as he does. He's looking for ANY validation he can get after growing up in an environment where he's made to feel like his hardest is never enough. That he's "retarded" (language I was subjected to so I'm projecting this to the situation, not that I think Azuma is or that that word should be used like this) and will never be as good as his brother. Which, on that note, because of the nature of east Asian cultures, it's my understanding that first born sons get preferential treatment but also the most burden. The first born sons traditionally get less freedom, with their future, but more freedom in their younger years, but they eventually have to have a good job, a good wife, and they are responsible for their siblings and parents for the rest of their lives, but they are often treated as the golden child who can do no wrong so long as they are doing what's "right" (so if the brother did like my friend did and left school to start an unstable career and worked part time as something as scandalous as a Host, then didn't marry well into his 30s or have kids, ect. He would recieve worse treatment, then the burden falls to the next son and they often say that feels like they are then carrying the burden of both themselves and their brother's mistakes, from what I'm told and studied. Could've changed a bit nowadays)

29:10 but she does? I find hard to believe wen just a few seconds what she zoned in being the change was that marina was on her side on the whole divorce thing

People usually forget that but empathy is a learned skill, by default any children youngh enough is a sociopath.

Zen

Just finished reading the manga. What a masterclass of a writing... and to think some people want this anime banned because it's "too intense"!!! They can go kick rocks!

Azuma always reminds me of the quote " When you are not fed love on a silver spoon, you learn to lick it off knives." Or in other words: if you don't receive love from your family growing up you'll desperately look for whatever little bit of love you are given , even if it's from a dangerous/toxic person.
