The Anime Dude

I love how this show leads into the Ending Song, such a little thing with a lot of impact that not enough shows do. Leading towards the moment of resolve we see from her at 25:00 & freezing on it is just so good.

Something they never really delved into in the show that they explained early on in the novel, is that the reason things are as they are now is that the nation they went to war with were non-Alban. It's meant to reflect the Japanese internment camps from ww2, rounding up everyone who "might" be a spy for the other side. Then this takes it a step further with making them fight to "prove" they weren't working with the enemy, then devolving further from there as it went on.

That’s very interesting. The Japanese interment camps are something that was glossed over in school. But I lived in LA and there was one a few hours north and my parents took me there as a kid anyway

alternatively, you are both Christian (I'm not, so correct me if my understanding is wrong) and strive to live like Jesus, you fail, and you know that you always will because its unattainable, so you try your best and call that good enough (being a good christian), they is no tangible goal if you can just keep working towards it, failing and being fine, and I think that can be called cowedly because failure to obtain it is expected and in the end you're okay with that (I'm not calling you cowards btw, as personally I view conviction of belief as a positive and ultimately brave thing). Compared to a goal that has real personal consequences if you don't manage it, in the show her ideals are very much something she knows she can't do, so just trying is good enough and allows her to pat her back and feel better, rather than setting a goal with serious pass/failure dynamics where you can't pat yourself on the back for just trying your best. I've read some Confucius philosophy and it involves self-development to obtain wisdom, righteousness etc and these are very much viewed as attainable, so failure says something about you, unlike in Christianity where its human nature's fault you failed or the show where she can just blame society and everyone else being terrible. I think its braver to take on a task or philosophy that puts yourself under the microscope rather than a goal were failure is expected and seen as inevitable. This might be badly explained but I think categorising her ideology as cowedly is understandable even if I think its quite harsh due to the lack of consequences.
