I think them throwing the crystal away makes perfect sense and is like a parallel with how they rejected the boat trip proposition : they prefer to enjoy the little detours and odd jobs on the way Travelling by boat is faster, easy and probably more comfortable but the point of their journey is not the destination, not really...(that's why they don't fly to go faster I'm guessing) Easy money or a mansion is not what they want... Frieren rejected Serie's one spell and Fern took a very practical one, nothing miraculous, bc working hard for it is more rewarding and brings more joy Something about the struggles has more appeal and after all it was said in the beginning that they want a "ridiculous and funny" adventure/stories to tell, following the path of Himmel 's party who will hear of their stories at the end of the journey Them escaping the monster in the crystal cave is the perfect story to tell
