How did you come across the dog one

Binch

How do you find anime to talk about? Like do you rifle through Scarecrow Video looking for anything that jumps out at you? Do you do something else?

Emily Loves Cookies

Hi Hazel! Not really a question but I happened to notice the Strawberry Switchblade poster in the background! Just wanted to say I think their music is really cool and love their style :D great taste as always

Habibi

Not a question but cool Puffy Ami Yumi poster! I still listen to them 💕

Reilly

Sorry if this is a dumb question but since you mention it a bit in the video, in your research of these anime ovas have you ever come across anything that could even remotely be considered a clue related to the “saki sanobashi”/ “go for a punch” lost media search? Realistically I think it’s obvious that it doesn’t exist, but the part of me that yearns for more gore anime to discover is still hoping it’s out there in some form or another. Like you said in the video tho, there is a pretty finite amount of unknown anime left to be translated and discovered, so chances are low, but I was super curious to hear your opinion on it. Anyways So happy you’re back!!!!!

Weeaboo William

Have you ever watched any ONA that compair to the mystique of the OVA era. Thunderbolt gundam is the only one that ever even got close for me.

BansheeNeet

How interested are you in talking about the wave of X-rated animated movies that started in the 70s spurred on by movies like Fritz the Cat? IDK how viable of a topic it is but I just think it’s fascinating how a bunch of pornographic animated films were either being made in the US or being imported from other countries and being dubbed in English, including the 1001 Arabian Nights and Cleopatra adult movies produced by Tezuka. The discussion of hentai being dubbed by adult video distributors in your video made me think of this era.

jrtiger

no worries if it’s too personal but how are you and alyssa doing? also, not sure if you’ve talked about it before, but how has it been releasing new music and what made you decide to change your artist name?

Travis Johnson

Very glad that you're back, Hazel! Just want to mention the funny timing of this video, as I went down to Seattle and checked out Scarecrow for the first time a week and a half ago. It was very cool seeing your fingerprints all over the anime section along with the other volunteer contributors. Seems like a really lovingly run place and hope they can continue on for a long time. What kind of work does volunteering there involve?

Chamomile

Thoughts on Japanese cyberpunk? Specifically the works of auteur filmmaker Shinya Tsukamoto (Tetsuo, Tokyo Fist, Denchu-Kozo etc.)

ey3556

have you seen shin megami tensei: tokyo revelations, and if so: what are your thoughts on it? its one of my favorite(?) animes and i honestly think it would've fit really well in this vid- weird dream like feel, poor pacing, homophobia, planes crashing into tower, its got it all!

Wesley Marshall

Glad to have you back, what a fantastic video. Did you film your segments of yourself on an older camera? Or did you use a new one and made it 4:3 in editing?

quinn

Hi Hazel, are there any plans / potential for future podcasts? Great return video, thanks for all the cool stuff to check out!

Mecca

☺️ so happy ur back! do u have any recommendations or resources for if i want to do a deep dive into the "heisei malaise" u mentioned? ive always gravitated towards media of that kind and didnt know why i liked it or that there was a name for it. i wont be able to go to scarecrow for the foreseeable future, but just know if it was in the cards i would have gone today (literally considered getting on a plane just to go). also i definitely will be there for the fundraiser stream and will be donating

Zoe Eats Oatmeal

Hi hazel (and alyssa?) so happy to see you’re back! I know you dabble primarily in the old and obscure, but are there any modern manga you’ve been keeping up with? my personal favorite at the moment is Dandadan, the three episode screening of the upcoming anime they showed in theaters was all i ever wanted and more.

Nominis300

Hello! Just like everybody else, I’m glad to see you’re back ^-^!!! You inspire me with these videos, so thanks a mil mate! I have a quick, but incredibly important question. As a Lupin III fiend who heard you mention it at some point at some time—I need to know; Who is your Favorite Lupin III character? For me, it’s definitely My ‘Lil Boy Goemon

Aya Fawson

No question here. I just wanted to tell you how much your videos mean to me. I am transfemme and was pretty aggressively repressing it and spent a lot of my teenage years putting on airs and shunning things that I / the people around me didn't deem cool or masculine enough, and one of those things was anime. It wasn't until I was well into my 20s that I was able to be more honest and introspective, started watching anime and learning Japanese, and eventually came out and started transitioning. Sometimes it makes me sad hearing about anime culture in the 90s and the 00s, because I feel like I missed out on something which I would have loved to be part of. But your videos enable me to get a window into that time, and discover the kinds of things I might have discovered if I wasn't such a toxic prude back then. Also, I find that I'm most comfortable presenting myself kinda tomboyish, which sometimes makes me feel like less valid of a woman, but you provide a positive example for me that makes me feel like I'm fine the way I am, and I don't need to prove anything to anybody. That, and your warm comforting voice and style of narration make your videos some of the coziest around. Sometimes, when I'm in a hard place, I'll go back and rewatch my favorites. I'm really glad you're back to making them, and I hope everything is going well for you and wish you the best!

Shane

Dearest Hazel: Why do you think the 70's were a time when transgressive films seemingly had a boom, and why do you like said material from that decade?

PlatonPizza3000

Hey Hazel it's been so long, it's good to see you back !! What is your favorite kind of CRT TV ? My friend got this big boy Thomson Scenium last year. It got a very good sound but it weight around 100kg (i dont know how many burgers it is sorry!!)

Rocía G

Of the weird obscure anime and OVAs you've seen without translations, which one would you want a translation of the most? You can give a separate answer for wanting a sub track vs a full dub

Alis

What is the weirdest experience you have had when renting a movie/OVA/etc?

Potion Yeller

Between you and Mae which of the Twin Towers are you?

Kelly R (KonaSuga)

So I’m slowly trying to work on making videos (ptsd and adhd are a fun combo ugh.) and I was wondering where you grab your sound effects from? I love how punchy your use of them is! Thanks for giving me the inspiration to actually go and make videos about things that are probably way to obscure for most people but that I love.

LizardQueen 27

I'm sure you get this question all the time, but I was listening to one of your previous Q&A's (actually the one for the other OVA video) and you brought up how you want to make a video on Shojo Tsubaki/Midori but just haven't been able to consolidate and take in all the information you want before you talk about it. So my question just is if you've been able to make any progress on your research in the almost 3 years since that Q&A?

K

Hey Hazel! Long time viewer, first time caller. I initially discovered your videos through your PS1 Lain video, and ever since then, I can't decide what my favourite of yours is! Just wanted to ask, as opposed to videos where you focus on a collection of various pieces of media, whether they be unified by a central theme or not, how do you decide on whether or not a piece of media deserves to have a video all to itself? Ma all the gods of furious strong be with you as you crunch opposents, and live like a windrammer as you fuck! :3

afro the kobold

welcome back! I was wondering, when looking for stuff like the OVAs for this video, how often do you find stuff that you want to talk about but you find you can't because it's too weird and/or horny for youtube like that kennel tokorozawa one for example

D3ZTRUCT0

Hey Hazel good to see you again I hope you are well! I will keep it short, is there anything you've wanted to cover in your videos that you haven't been able to find? Like an OVA or movie you know exists but just can't find anywhere?

vivi

Hiya what was your favourite part of this video to edit and is there a way to watch your scarecrow spotlight?(im like a million miles away from Seattle unfortunately but seeing that many video tapes organised in one place for the public was so so beautiful and it seems conpletely invaluable) Thank you!!

Violet

does anyone know of places to find miyuki-chan in wonderland online? update https://archive.org/details/MIYUKICHAN (raw)

Sophia

Hi Hazel! I’m so excited you’re back! Which of the OVA’s in this video surprised you the most? Either positively or negatively?

Elias Rosner

Hi Hazel! How did you manage to trace all the various influences for these OVAs? Like, was a lot of it off the dome or vague recognitions of names/images that you then dug into? Was there a bunch of ancillary research? Oh! And did you hear about Kite's bluray release from Discotek and Stop! Hibari-kun getting localized by Peow2? As soon as I saw the announcements I thought of your vids.

saidsoftly

what's the song at about 50 min in during christmas in janurary? it's so familiar

Terra Home

Hello! You cover Catnapped in this video, so I was wondering if you have seen any of Takashi Nakamura’s other directorial works like the film Tree of Palme or the TV anime Fantastic Children? If not, would you be interested in watching them?

Doot Doot

What’s your favorite guitar?

Marcy Coral

great vid! red colored elegy went straight into my cart thanks for the homework. three random questions: favorite episode of ultra q? best meal you've had recently? anything new coming to the msisters store?

SpaceCowboy

What’s your advice on the best way to get over your anxiety of playing music in public?

lucie

what is the best way to punch up instant ramen on a cartoon-fly-popping-out-of-wallet budget ? (please help, i'm in uni and i'm starting to think i maybe can't just eat carbohydrates to live)

Borealis Capps

Hazel, did you know there's a real anime like Dude Gizardo but it's with trains? I'm not joking either, Kikansha Yaemon: D51 no Daibouken is mostly train stock footage with tiny bits of animation here and there. I was extra flabbergasted while hearing your description thinking, "They made ANOTHER one of these?!?"

Super Willy 64

My heart skipped a beat when you brought up Radio City Fantasy. I discovered it randomly while completely stoned one day. Everything about it clicked with me and it ended up becoming my favorite piece of art over a few years, though most comments online felt it was mid. I’m curious if you have any further thoughts on it such as the guitar tone you mentioned disliking or whatever else. Or if there was a piece of art that clicked with you entirely but you never found anyone else who felt the same way. Thanks, Queen.

Juntsuro

Not entirely related to the video but which megami tensei games have you played since you mentioned it.

Seth Murphy

Hello hazel! I would like to enquire about an image that appears 53 minutes and 18 seconds into your video on "Eiken", In which you flash an image of the Australian snack food "Cheezels" on screen! I was wondering what your reason for including a reference to the treat was and also your opinion on the strangely sexual story included on the side of every box of "Cheezels"! I would appreciate a reply by end of quarter. With love, tetsuo the qay man

Ericka Ford

Hi Hazel! Really happy to see you pop back up as your work has helped a ton in getting through some hard times! One of my all-time favorite videos is your Cozy Anime RPG's one and wanted to ask if there have been any particularly comfy games of that sort you'd recommend and/or possibly cover in the future?

Local Smores Pop Tart

Not a question just a comment about that clip of the Sheetz during the violence jack segment. As someone who lives in a small town outside the city of Pittsburgh, I'm not going to lie that gave me a warm comfy feeling seeing that since I know that lighting almost every night coming home from work or on occasion when I'm stopping there late at night. Short story short though that shot is a vibe to me :)

Ranakel

Hi! You mentioned in your video about an hour in that you experienced Violent Jack as part of a viewing combo deep in the night. Do you have any other anecdotes of consuming some sort of media in a fugue deep into the night? Asking as someone whose first contact with Utena was at 5am with a friend and her friend deep in the night after a The Dark Tower, Fullmetal Panic Fumoffu, world war 2 airplane battles docufiction combo. The sleep deprivation and mental exhaustion really makes the car wash scene hit different.

DAVID (ISN'T) DEAD

Welcome back, I loved this video as I do with all of your content, My Questions are, 1, How on earth did you discover some of these and 2, How much Harddrive space has this taken up? I am because aftey our first video on VHS anime I downloaded ALL of your suggestions and I have never recovered since I don't want to delete them and risk them loosing seeders in the future, Thanks all best to y'all from Sunny (Lie( Scotland.

malpertuis

What is your holy grail anime cel - I'm talking old school paint on celluloid era? Also I love checking out hazel's background collage mic corner. ❤️

LucasBuilds

so I've a Go Nagai question: are you familiar with X-Bomber, localized in english as Star Fleet? Abject failure in Japan, but highly successful over here in England. (I guess UK audiences were primed for puppets-and-miniatures science fiction by the works of Gerry Anderson.) Nagai worked on the character and mecha designs, and it really shows.

martyb

You mentioned developing an old-ponytail-guy musical sensibility. I was wondering what your feelings are in regards to Steely Dan?

Dawn Coulson

first off, not a question but I wanted to let you know that a big turning point in my voice training was actually when I started imitating your voice so uh.. thanks secondly, and this one is an actual question, would you consider doing a full deep dive video just on the type of janky home computer animated 80s/90s video releases like the flying luna clipper & nanny lynn video? it feels like in a way it might be a nice spiritual sequel to your rare tokusatsu video (in that they're both centred on amateurish, low/zero budget filmmaking)

Madeline Hampton

With your support of Scarecrow Video, is there a chance we could see a video that functions as a love letter to these kinds of businesses and consumer experiences? Something that both reflects on them as they were and identifies how they currently exist in little ways fractured across retail and digital spaces?

YWM

fantastic work on your latest video and I really can't wait to see Divine Hammer when it's released! I'm sure you've answered this before but what do you consider the most difficult part of writing the scripts for videos and how do you overcome them?

Rewind Gamer

Between the focus on the Twin Towers and the inexplicable dramatic Dem narration is it safe to call this video Dem Payne II.9 Violence Jack Ultimate Redux Edition?

Callum

So happy to have you back! I was pleasantly surprised to notice a Strawberry Switchblade poster on your wall. I was just wondering how you got into them and what your favourite song of their's is

Caleb

Hey Hazel, hope you are doing well. I discovered you from the cozy rpg's video last fall and binged all your shit and happy to see your still kicking it with another new video! Other than your fundraiser stream will you be planning to be doing more streams on your twitch? Whether it be solo or with friends? Also, thanks to your facecam footage I noticed that sick ass parasite eve poster and had to get my own. You have good taste in posters.

oli_d

loved the vid. thanks for the dopeness and spreading stokedness about art as per uszh. Was curious if you had any wisdom to share on balancing and switching between essay writing and creative work? Have you found the contrast to ever work in your favor? I loved the smiling broadly ep heaps and was wondering how its been spinning all these varied creative plates all at once.

Lonesome Lurker

Glad you're back! I'm curious what sort of daily rituals you partake in. Like, you play any NYT games (I enjoy Connections), do you try watching a new video every night right before bed? Do you struggle to find time for any of that faff, being too busy? P.S. fun seeing you pop up with lovelandisle on streams <3

Shae

longtime fan & first time asker! how do you get your hair to look like that? its super cool and im very jealous lol great job btw and i cant wait to see whatever's next :D

Peter Ciccolo

No question, just glad you're back.

Julian A. V.

Hello! I'm so glad you're back :3 I dont remember if this has been asked or talked about before before but without giving too much away what's the film going to be about? Thanks and hope you're doing well ˆˆ

Lil Stinker

Not a question but Cannanes album spotted on wall!! That album is so cool and they are so cool and you are so cool. Great to have you back!

Lil Stinker

And I guess if there is a question related to that it would be, do you have any other Australian indie bands that you dig?

Sean Kirkpatrick

I recently watched Miyuki Chan in Wonderland as well. It’s a personal goal to collect as much physical copies of CLAMP media as I can do recently picked it up for a few bucks online. Miyuki appears in the CLAMP School Detectives as well although without any risqué shenanigans of course. I recently learned that the Wish manga (genderless angels falling in love with human boys and demon boys) was inspired by their Jojo Jotaro x Kakyoin doujinshi which I can now see a bit looking at the Wish character designs. Anyway, If i had a question it would be are there any other weird CLAMP things you’ve engaged with or enjoyed recently?

Sean Kirkpatrick

also thanks for putting me onto the discommunication manga- praying the translation gets finished one day!

Turbo Queer

Welcome back, Hazel. Have you ever wondered what Sonic Adventure 3 would be like if it were on Dreamcast?

yuzufilm

not a question but thank you for the recommendation on yokohama kaidashi kikou. I picked up the manga and gained an affinity for the slice of life genre. i'd recommend usuzumi no hate fore more "robot-girl in the cozy post-apocalypse" niche within the slice of life genre.

Manic

Thinking of weird & kinda scary anime, my mind went back to a random VHS viewing of my youth that I only ever remembered the very weird ending of and spent ages trying to resurface. Thanks to your video reminding me, I managed to finally rediscover it and found it was available YT as well! The weirdness that is 'Birth' by Shinya Sadamitsu from 1984 cannot be understated and I would love to see/hear your take on it?

LL

Happy to see your return! Inspired by your VHS bit, what obscure, "no one outside my family knows what I'm talking about" english language show or movie sticks with you from your childhood?

bidoofis

It’s always nice to see a new hazel video, especially after so long. I hope y’all are doing well! I wanted to ask what got you interested in exploring old/niche anime?

Will Ahern

Hi Hazel, glad to see you back with a new video and hope you are doing well. VHS has been a big rabbit hole for me recently as a human growing up in the late 90s/early 2000s I find myself collecting some some weird and rare VHS tapes. I also try to nab as many anime titles as possible on VHS as I think just having the physical media I would have loved to have had as a kid is just fun and exiting to display and chat about with others. My question for you is, As media ages and we will grapple more with the issue of finding the service that streams a given title vs where to find a title at all, do you think physical media will triumph as it did in the past as things fall into licensing limbo? I think about Full Metal Alchemist (2003) being difficult to find legally to stream yet I have the physical DVDs from my con years. Do you think we may end up in a place where a watch party becomes a thing again? Where you need to network to find a given piece of media becomes a reality like in years past when your anime club was at the mercy of who could bring their "Totally legit not at all questionable hard drive" to show Kaiba (2008) to your anime club on your college campus instead of just pulling up whatever streaming is all the rage? Much love to you and your endeavors, looking forward to what you drop next for us to enjoy!

Seth Peacock

What series or franchises have you gotten really completionist about? Wanting to experience every installment/adaptation, etc. I've had franchise completionism on the mind since I have been going through every adaptation of Dororo despite not having a huge attachment to Dororo. My brain just said I gotta watch/read them all.

a bit of viscera

Good to have you back, Hazel! I'm not from the Seattle area so I've never gotten to visit Scarecrow, but it does remind me of second-hand record stores in my area which are always chalk-full of the odd. What's your most unusual find at Scarecrow? (Or at any second-hand media store like it)

Zane

Thanks for the recommendation pile, even that one... (I'm sure you'll know) A while back I got an impromptu idea from a friend visiting to watch the 1985 piece Penguin Memories: Shiawase Monogatari over dinner. Wondering if you had any opinion on it, especially in lieu of its origins as promotional material for Suntory Beer, or how sponsored media like this can sorta spiral out of the initial pitch line as a more general topic if the flick is not to your personal liking. Surprise musical appearance by Seiko Matsuda too. Genuinely glad things are well enough for you to return, and hope you and Alyssa & company are all in a better spot.

HazelYT

hahaha wow will answer because i have it scheduled for the fundraiser stream!

Josh Graham

I’m deleting my other question and doing a new one. Hey Hazel, did you edit the creepypasta retrospective recently? I was rewatching it recently and I could have sworn there was new segment. Probably just a mandella effect situation, but I feel a bit like I’m going insane. Thanks!

Burnt_Ramen

Welcome back! Just wanted to say that you have at least fostered within me a passion for discovery in media. And whether it has been OVA's or albums, the art that i have found has brought me so much happiness. Oh and how do you think all the weird shit you've consumed has impacted your own art?

Lila

It seems like this vid has a lot of moments that could potentially act as onboards for new viewers (defining otaku terms, speaking more directly to the camera). This along with specified cringing against the term "hazelcore" and previous video choices makes this vid feel like a push towards a blanker slate/new era for you. Was this at all intentional on your part or was it just a product of how much time/effort went into this one leading to some shifts in your approach emerging organically? Sorry for the wordy question, love the vid!!!

James Hull

Completely off topic but I’m wondering if you would able to talk about what it was like to work on the Glass Beach remix record. Genuinely one of my favorites off that one. If not then what are some of your favorite music centric anime?

Melissa

Really love this video, left it with a TON of new things to watch, immediately watched California Crisis after viewing even. Your work has gotten me into my own media preservation efforts (like my tokusatsu importing and fansubbing), which has led me down a lot of rabbit holes. So my question is, what do you think could be done at this moment to best aid in media preservation efforts? Is it focusing on hunting down the last copies of things, making efforts to better preservation technology, finding physical and digital space for the files, dumping money into existing media preservation orgs, etc?

rainaScallion

ever planning on releasing the smiling broadly ep physically / any news about a new release? also do u know of /f aka 54% aka teamcpu, or like emamouse or smth, because that whole tangentially connected group is a rly interesting internet rabbithole that connects really weirdly to so much other stuff im invested in :p

Papa Phoenix

love to see you back hazel! so off topic sorry but i was just curious if you saw Look Back when it was out in theaters. the oneshot made me cry and the movie made me SOB in theater. much love! ✌️

Katherine

Really good to see you in my sub box again! As someone with a lot of niche interests, and no one to talk about them with, how do you find communities for niche topics?

Nueki

Did you ever find out what anime was playing at that bar?

Nostalgicvhs

Very happy to have you back Hazel I just wanna say I appreciate the representation for people who mix up their lefts and rights in this video my gf often picks on me for it but you’re absolutely right despite our inability we’re still loved

Colt Trow

Hi Hazel! Long time listener first time caller. I wanted to say that it's wild that you picked the list you did because I swear I saw every one of those OVAs with a friend over discord last summer. I was so confused by the one with the twins. My friend and I only clicked on it because the thumbnail made us think it was Yaoi. Anyway, I wanted to ask, have you ever seen Nyan Neko Sugar Girls? It feels exactly like the kind of thing that would at least be on your radar.

peepeefart420

Where do you get all of your cool anime posters? I really love your poster wall, and want one for my own space. Where would be a good place to look?

Wally Limwicks

Whats the song played at the very beginning title crawl in the video

Dennis Wright

not a question, but... yo they made a switch game where you fight with your butt! Ketsu Battler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8-5DgWg5Rs

Fran O'Farrell

you don't have to answer this if you don't want but: is "smiling broadly" at all a reference to the lucky star doujiinshi of the same name?
