hi! i just got done listening to your weezer filibuster podcast episode, can’t believe i listened to all four hours, and it got me wondering is there any artist/band that you would love to go into an album deep dive about

Skeleton Gwen

What would you consider to be your holy grail of lost media? :0 Like something you'd hope to just be found some day. Also love your work, keep at it (○´3`)ノ

Goji✦Dragon

I’ve been wondering if it wouldn’t be neat to go to in person to second hand stores in japan looking for lost or unknown animes. Japan is interesting in it had so much openness to just “produce your own stuff” back in the day. Do you think there’s stuff like this still being produced in such low quantities that it becomes obscure by default? What’s your opinion on modern lost media?/

actually a dawg

Forgive me if this is inelegantly phrased, but as someone who is publicly online how do you keep a healthy, idk separation between work life, parasocial relationships and actual friendships? Would you have any advice for some one who wants create content that's personal and engage with an audience, but maintain health balance between the personal and the public? Most importantly do yall have snacks ? (I think we all feel bad about starving you guys in the increasingly long q and a vids)

Gabbo

Hi! I'm a new patron and I just wanted to say to keep up the great work! As for the question, I was curious on how often you find yourself going on lost media hunts like these? I have personally found myself countless times noticing something, usually relating to obscure ps1 japanese media, and finding myself down a rabbit hole searching for information or a piece of promised or implied media only to end up at a dead end. It kinda sucks to sometimes run into a dead end, but I always find it rewarding when I uncover something hidden or forgotten about. On a slightly related yet still unrelated note, do you have any intention of covering obscure 4th generation ps1 and n64 games? Stuff like Evil Zone, Battle Hunter, the Evangelion n64 game, Digimon world series, etc etc? I personally love diving into old ass jank like that on authentic hardware, really activates my autism in all the right ways. Anyway, keep up the great work!

Elijah Sadiky

Hey Hazel and Alyssa (and Wander if he's there too, I love him) been really enjoying the recent vids and was wondering if either of yall had any thoughts on any of CLAMP's works? Also unrelated but I've been listening to a lot of Twinkle Park lately and noticed that you don't post lyrics with your songs, I was just kinda curious if there was a reason for that? Thanks again for the great content guys!

Kestrel

Really enjoying the video! Finding obscure media like this is always a journey. I'm going to school to become a librarian, so I'm a little biased, but I think it's so much fun watching the work that goes into researching something like this. I have a question: I'm currently in the process of hunting down a Japan-only strategy guide from the 80s, and Yahoo Auctions is looking like my best option for obtaining a copy of it it. Do you have any advice for purchasing items off there?

Ranakel

Thank you for the video! Seeing the use of some devices to dowse in the depths of old archives and file formats got me wondering: What are some of the most obscure, weirdest, or dumbest skills you two had to learn, whether for a video's sake or someone else (I know I learned a few strange things to make tabletop/php forum RPG character backgrounds)

Eli Bildirici

Oh did this just go live? This is gonna be good!

Powercell Zeke

Hey there! I was wondering how you both would recommend learning about media literacy. Things like theming and character writing, and understanding a work more thoroughly in general. I'd like to engage with art on a deeper level than "thing good, thing bad". Are there any learning resources you would recommend? Also, any thoughts on Jak and Daxter, and Klonoa? I also just wanted to say, your Elfen Lied video means a lot to me, and caused me to start having a lot of weird gender feelings, which I'm still trying to deal with today, so thanks a lot haha.

Luggy

Hello, new fan here! I discovered your channel AND music thanks to my friends! Both your channel and music have so much blood, sweat, and love put into them, it's inspiring! As for my question, you mention near the end of the video that due to Japan's differences in copyright laws, Japan has a different approach when it comes to lost media. What exactly is so different about Japanese copyright laws that would stop a western approach to find and archive lost media? And how exactly do Japanese otakus approach said lost media? Rock on Hazel! I can't wait to see what weird new video you're cooking up!

Kitty ( The cursed existence of financial instability ) fo

Would you recommend that someone hunt down Dvds of obscure anime and how much money do you usually spend when you buy vhs or DVDs of series? I would love to update the Arista Good Luck anime's details on myAnimeList but fksahdg it seems impossible. I'm glad that you managed to find the information of these lost media anime.

T. K.

Hey folks, Great video, but straight to business! (feel free to pick and choose) 1. Do you have any further thoughts on Comiket that would inspire you to make a video on it, and would y'all ever want to attend a Comiket ( if so winter or summer. ) 2. Any thoughts on how US zine culture compare to Japanese Doujinshi culture and how they compare to earlier small/elicit press like Tijuana bibles and/or Shunga. 3. With your video's focus on the media of Comiket being temporary so you feel there is an argument that archiving it might go against artistic intent? (I have no horse in the race just thought it was an interesting question) (y'all might enjoy this British documentary on comics and manga from 1989 called "the day comics grew up" manga part is at 29;00 and is broad stroke and a little 'unfortunate' but is still neat; https://youtu.be/dSQXumqHdbg ) Be well.

Ruben N

Newer patron so sorry if you’ve covered this in the past. I’ve been curious ever since the Sing Yesterday For Me video what your personal history with music discovery was like. Keep up the great work!

logan

Hey y'all, this latest video owned, and so did Connections and Feelings! I've got two questions, but feel free to ignore either for any reason: 1) I was wondering where to find Reveal Fantasia. I found it on redump/internet archive but on that particular rom dump keeps crashing after starting a new game. Is there another dump or is it something with the game itself and emulation settings? 2) If you or Alyssa got to work on any existing series (game, anime, tv, film, etc.) what would it be and why?

nortti

How did you get the clip playing on the GBA? I've heard of the Game Boy Video carts, but I don't presume the software used for authoring them is available. PS: Was the voice reading the Guardian Recall review meant to be a reference to Duke Nukem? Sounded a bit like it

Ruben N

I legit caught myself saying “is that Good Luck?” At the end of the video so thanks for always including the song list so that I could confirm that.

Shellsews

Have you ever thought about covering Sonic Underground for a future video? Or just your general thoughts on the show! I caught your recent stream of Sonic and I’m glad to see that the show hasn’t been completely forgotten about. I have all these hazy early morning memories of watching the show before school. The fact that Sonic Adventure and Underground came out roughly within the same timeframe is so wild to me too, since one of beloved and the other has faded into somewhat obscurity. Thanks again for all the awesome videos you’ve been putting out!

Jupiter

Hey hazel and Alyssa! Loved the video, tho I'm biased bc this is my favorite channel lol I was wondering if you two had any favorite artist/illustrator, and if you have any favorite artbook? Also wanted to ask if you two have any favorite GL media? P.S.: It's lesbian week as I'm writing this, so happy week for us!

Java

Hello! Longtime listener, first time question-asker. With the announcement of Sonic Origins, I'm curious: if Sega were to greenlight another Sonic game collection (with similarly-definitive versions of its games), what games would you include? (Hard mode: you can only limit yourself to only 5 games.) Thank you so much for the wonderful vids and I hope you two are having a wonderful day!

ItsRileyMe

Hey-ya! I hella agree with the importance of archival work and how it's necessary to preserve the labor and love creators put into their work. That being said, It's hard to really think about stuff like this happening now. For zines and other fanworks, we got itch.io and the internet archieve. Often now, when things go missing, it's by choice of the artist(s), so copying there isn't right without concent. Media hunts are getting longer and longer and there's likely not going to be too many new ones in the future. How do you see that? What's the hunt to you? How would you feel if tomorrow all mysteries were found, all lost media archieve at its highest quality, if Go for a Punch was finally and definitively confirmed fake in a convincing enough way for reddit? Would you be happy, sad, relieved that every search is over? Personally, I see lost-media hunts as vital to maintain interest in past works. A library has to put on events after all, despite the centuries of collective knowledge, but I'm a little bean with little stake. I'm not the one who puts in the effort to actually find the doujin, the OVAs, the late night cereal adds, so it'd be rad to hear the thoughts of someone who is.

Eli Bildirici

I absolutely love your commitment to preservation and feel a real sort of kinship there, just awesome work . I was wondering on that note if you’d be willing to share the ISO itself? (Personally, if there are wonky framerate issues and such, I’d love to take a crack at filtering directly from the source, and even if that doesn’t pan out, there is value in the untouched ISO being backed up in a thorough/redundant way. Understood if you’re uncomfortable with this)

Wani

Hello there! Just wanted to randomly ask, where did y'all get the giant Lammy Vinyl you guys have? I saw it in the Lain video and just had to ask. Thanks again! Love all the work you guys put into these videos <3

HazelYT

this was my plan from the start but i didn't have the equipment to do so until after the vid needed finishing. just ripped the iso and will upload it to archive.org stat. ill talk a bit more about that in the reupload

Alex W

Did you capture much more of the ripping process? Like, get any sounds or anything like that of old VHS ripping hardware? Something about the tactility of old tech that's so cool!

Scarlett

As a fellow anime database bottom-of-barrel scraper, are there any particular hidden gems of note you've found? (that you probably wont talk about in a video, that is.) I know I've definitely found some things that while very low-key, I think about fondly. Funnily enough that's including Arisa Good Luck, so i was pleasantly surprised to be reminded about it this way

Blue Delliquanti

I was fascinated by the part of of the video about Comiket, and the CD Rom listing that year's participants. Even if you didn't find what you were looking for on there, were there any other interesting finds when you browsed the CD Rom's contents?

Doozy_Uzi

Heya, thought I'd ask the both of you if there are any anime/manga directors/writers/artist/etc that if they're attached to something it'll pique your interest?

arseholetep the insufferable

you've referenced it couple times in your videos but i was wondering what your feelings towards the MOTHER franchise are?

Alis

What is your favorite theme of cat name? (My cat Muffin has endeared me to food-themed names, personally)

Oscar Franco

Hi hazel Have you heard about the anime Yakitate japan also I’ll literally die for an exploitation anthology video as you said it in the last Q n A

Nicholas DeRosa

Hi Hazel and Alyssa On the subject of Comiket, have you ever considered doing a video on some of the works and culture that have emerged from it, an example being the When They Cry (Higurashi, Umineko, Ciconia) franchise? (also curious on your thoughts on WTC if you have any experience with it) Edit: Lmao, recently had the Elfen Lied video on in the background and got my answer to the WTC question.

Codfish Cartographer

You get to magically make a change to any anime or video game, with zero regards for budget or practicality. What do you change, how do you change it, and why? In the last questions vid you mentioned looking for good ramen joints in/around Seattle - Samurai Noodle near the Uwajimaya is good for the price, but Menya Musashi is my absolute favorite, their tsukemen (dipping-style ramen) is to absolutely die for. I don't live in PNW anymore, but whenever I visit Seattle visiting there is 100% top priority for me.

Unfeatured Films

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! First time Patron here, I love the videos and been watching since the Lain-one! Thank you so much for introducing me to Discommunication, it's one of my fave romantic stories now! Anyways, the question: I'm currently in the middle of writing a massive two part video about horror in animation, one focusing on anime and the genesis of these vids was to be a sort of "Yes and!" to your videos on Takena and OVA's. In the latter you say that after the bubble economy burst the decadence of something like Urotsukidoji stopped being appealing. I'm curious to hear a little bit more about your thoughts on this, because I've been going down the rabbit hole with this and to me it would seem that level of decadence didn't go out of style. Considering works like La Blue Girl, the Demon Beast Invasion-series, Apocalypse Zero and the five(!) sequels to Urotsukidoji, the excess was well alive post-crash unto the early 00's. Anyways, thank you so much for your work. You're really a trailblazer in the scene!

SoDaft

Hi never used patreon before but, your videos have been my favourite for a good while now especially your video discussing Digimon tamers. In terms of questions I am currently working on a video myself about the Bandai Wonderswan. While I was researching I came across all sorts of strange anime games I have never heard of before. Its an absolute treasure trove of strange games made my obscure devs. Have you played any wonder swan games and if you have what have you played and what did you think of it? Also if you want my recommendation you should play Dicing Knight its an absolute banger.

TeuCat

Captivating video as always! I wanted to ask what browser extension / obscure-feature-I-don't-know-about you use for translating websites? Noticed it when you were looking through the archived Mangapac website. It seems more natural to use than Google translating the page with Chrome. I like the way the highlighted translation is in a pop-up rather than trying to replace the text in the page as well as the dictionary entry that appears per word you hover over. Thanks again for the hour-long dump of interesting info I'll probably never use again in the future 🙏

ILikePopCans

I never felt more seen then hearing hazel talk about finding a piece of obscured media and spending hours trying to find any info on the internet about it. DeepL is a life saver when I do my kana google searches. Do either of you know what the most obscured thing you tried to look for on the internet? But after watching the video i'm guessing for hazel it's Arisa Good Luck.

Elias Rosner

As a librarian, this kind of archival recovery of lost/nearly lost media made my heart swell. So my question is, and you kinda mentioned it in the video, but do you think you'll continue to seek out these kinda of cultural/media preservation projects in the future? Or is it a matter of proximity to something you've stumbled across elsewhere? Also, with the removal of patron names, will we still get a good dose of Wander per vid? Clearly it's what we're all here for haha

Ashley Wintermute Williams

greetings to my favorite content creator! favorite anime intro song? likewise, favorite anime outro song? bonus question: what is the best in-universe anime band, and why is it Ho-kago Tea Time?

Lula

Hi hazel + alyssa !! Was wondering if either of u have watched michiko and hatchin and if so what u think of it? I recently watched it per my girlfriend’s recommendation (she’s not a huge anime person, but it’s her fav) and I rlly loved it!! It’s super atmospheric, beautifully designed and both leads are super compelling both in and out of their relationship to each other. I’m disappointed but not surprised at how unpopular it seems to be as far as 2000s/2010s anime goes (especially because it was directed by Sayo Yamamoto who also directed Yuri on Ice which is like…. Super super popular)

SerenityVenus

Salutations! I was wondering if you have seen dirty pair (the anime), and if so, what are your thoughts on it? Specifically, what are your thoughts on the very progressive transgender scene?

ambientdroning

(btw my name is pronounced like 'shiv-awn'! gaelic phonetics usually give people trouble lol!) Hi Hazel and Alyssa, I wanted to ask your opinions on which sonic game(s) a total newcomer should start with? Also what are your favourite flowers? Thanks!

trans rights ✨

Sorry if this has been asked before but after seeing this video I got curious. You mentioned not speaking Japanese. In spite of this your desire to go on untranslated media hunts is really vast. Did you ever study Japanese in HS? What tools do you use to help understand languages you don’t speak?

Madds_Lion

Howdy! Loved the new video and I appreciate Hazels commitment to her topics with pulling the video to add new information. I know that mustve been really stressful for you, Hazel but we really appreciate it! 🥺 My question is for Alyssa! A few QnA's back my ears perked up at you meantioning Rozen Maiden. As a fellow twenty-something that fixated on that anime as a teen, it was crazy hearing it brought up in the wild. I was just curious who your favorite doll was? I rewatched the first season this winter and was charmed by Shinku alot.

Madison

Salut Hazel & Alyssa! I loved the video but I have one question I've been meaning to ask for a while. As a Certified Lum Lover:TM: myself, my interest was piqued when you mentioned in the Vlad Love video how Urusei Yatsura deserves its own video and I've been wondering if you plan on following through with this for a potential future video. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places, but there's not much analytical content on YouTube about Urusei Yatsura despite it's huge impact on anime as we knew it today. Anyways, beyond my question, thank you so much for the amazing content! No matter what you put out there I know I'll love!

GrimsChild

Regarding nearly or completely lost media, are there any particular titles, anime or otherwise, that you're still trying to track down either for rarity or for the quality of the product? As a fan of rare and experimental film that mostly exists in bad or degraded versions this video really struck a chord regarding delving into potentially mediocre territory just to satisfy curiosity.

Flann

Do you collect any doujinshi/Comiket premiere products, independent project or fan? I've been importing for well over a decade and been reading scanlations since the dial up days, my prized possession being the Clamp in Wonderland issue where Kakyoin lays an egg lol

Arpaigeio

I've Gotta know how you got Arisa to play on your GBA SP and do you think it's a gag you'd do again? That was a hoot! So choice ( ̄︶ ̄) 👌

Shane

Apologies if this has been asked before. But how do you feel about cons, and would you make con appearances, given the opportunity?

Linus Wood

The idea of owning multiple computers at the same time is very alien to me. I realized watching this video that I've always thought of a computer as something I have for its utility that I use until it's dead and then replace. Maybe I'd have a home pc and a laptop, but that's as far as I'd consider going. I'm not a tech person, for the record. So my question is, how did you amass your computer collection and how long have you had each computer? What specific utility does each operating system have besides ultra-specific uses like how you used them in the video? How do you know when it's time to get a new one? Thanks for the great video!

Tech___Nique

You mentioned in this video that the lower quality you initially experienced Arisa Good Luck in added to the experience, I recently sought out a VHS home recording of FLCL's first airing and found seeing the show in that quality really enriched my experience, if only in knowing that higher quality versions were readily available. Do you ever purposefully seek out lower quality versions of things, to add that sort of analog grim to the watching/listening exerpience?

Phoenix

What do you think is your favorite obscure anime? Hit us with some deep shit. Also, unrelated to anything, but if Alyssa is there, hi! I hope you are enjoying FF14!

Booger

Your hunts for lost or almost lost media got me thinking about media that doesn't exist but almost did; pitches and concepts that just never got put into full production. I can't tell you how much time I spend thinking about the 70's anime adaptation of Pippi Longstocking that Hayao Miyazaki pitched to Astrid Lindgren, who rejected it. Looking at the concept art is equal parts fascinating and painful. Do you have a favorite unproduced project that you wish had actually come out?

Julian A. V.

Not really a question but just wanted to say you've been really inspiring to me as someone who wants to be a creator and bullied himself out of liking anime for the past few years. Your content made it so I could start to rediscover that love and accept myself as an anime fan :,) To actually ask a question: Do you have any tips with how to find the time and energy to research and watch all the stuff you do? I want to make the effort to experience more art.

Christopher Roger Simons

Hi y'all! Before you ask, my last name is pronounced like the name 'Simon,' with an 'S' at the end. It seems like monthly questions keep growing! If there are ever too many questions for a video, would you consider letting the fans vote on questions and then answer what floats to the top? Ross Scott from Ross's Game Dungeon does something similar for his monthly Q and A. If anyone watching knows of a good system for choosing questions, this user would be interested to hear about it in the comments. Thanks again to both of you for doing these for the Patrons!

Sakunya

Whoa yea this is my first time using Patreon I literally made an account just to support you haha. But yea other then that I recently watched every single one of your available videos and wanted to ask how long do you have to research these topics like this stuff is super informative and neat. I love it.

Leota

Hi Hazel!! Hope you're doing well! :) Have you ever watch Di Gi Charat, and if so, what your opinion on its different iterations? Also if you want a laugh, check out the "Reception" section on it's Wikipedia page. The quotes about Dejiko are kind of hilarious

Morpheus

I don't know if you're still taking questions (if not I'll bug you next time lol), but have you played Balan Wonderworld? I have not played it (mainly because I am epileptic and scared of that final fight, though do I own the game), but I find it such a fascinating exquisite corpse of a game that's just never boring to talk about. Especially in regards in how it turned generally respected "rockstar" game designer Yuji Naka into an almost Inafune type character with the whole "actually he wasn't -really- the father of Sonic, that title should go to Hirokazu Yasuhara" and his egotistical dickery behind the scenes (especially the stuff wrt Sonic Xtreme) is becoming more well known
