AHHH I'm so excited to check this out

No Good

Hope you're well

Chicanery

Question: Hey how are you doing? Thanks for coming back :)

Doozy_Uzi

Welcome back, pancakes or waffles?

Bumble

opinions on sonic frontiers footage and info?

Blue Bee

First off: Welcome back!! I haven't watched the video yet (I'm SO excited!!) so I don't have a video specific question yet, HOWEVER I wanted to quickly ask if you've read any of Tatsuki Fujimoto's oneshots he released over the past year or so? and if so, what did you think of them? As an artist, Look Back struck such a powerful cord with me I still think about it near daily. Please continue to take it easy and don't overwork yourself now that you're back!!! Edit 08/24/22 Holy shit I didn't expect you to mention one of fujimoto's oneshots LMAO ALSO!!!! even bigger than my previous question, have you heard of Forest by Liar-Soft? I never beat it, but I played it when I was like 15 and it did something to my brain I can't put my finger on. Note of warning for anyone else reading this though: it is ABSOLUTELY an eroge, however the style is unlike what I've ever seen. I need to go back and finish soon

Habibi

welcome back! Question: did you read any interesting book too? I love your anime/manga reference books you have mentioned so far in your videos

Chicanery

Okay, serious question: can you post the paella recipe? My wife is vegetarian.

Shellsews

welcome back!! Would you recommend the Space Runaway Ideon movie without seeing the anime? It sounds like something I'd enjoy watching but not sure if I have the time to sit through an entire anime. Thanks!!

sim

Aaaa I'm so glad to see you posting again and to hear that you've had a good break! I was also so giddy when I saw you guys play the Ib rework, although I didn't have the time to fully watch through it yet. Any plans on (re)playing any other rpg maker games and their reworks?

SmokePowder

Question: After watching Ideon, do you have any interest in engaging with any other works by Tomino? (if so, out of the lot I think Turn A Gundam would be best since it fits into the anime countryside)

Of the Nose Clan

welcome back! hopefully youve gotten some good rest. what would you consider the most underutilized genre/subgenre in any medium? what unexplored ideas do those genres have that you wish were more thoroughly developed?

Jett Ronin

Howdy, very glad you got some well deserved rest & I hope it was good for you both mentally and physically. I wanted to ask if there’s a dating sim / Bishoujo type game (eroge or otherwise) that really got you invested (at least by a bit of the way in) rather than just playing because you knew it was a significant piece for one reason or another. I was also wondering if you’d consider adding a more consistent little few-minute-section with Alyssa on human insects because the moments she pops in to pod spirit for a second are always very nice. I know it’s mostly a you-and-Nikki thing but I just thought it might be good to use as an intermission or something idk.

Juan

Welcome back, great video! Time flies, I hardly noticed summer had passed. I hope the vacation treated you well, and it's good to hear that you'll prioritize your health over keeping a rigid schedule. None of your videos have disappointed, always looking forward to the next one no matter the time. Question: So many of the things you talk about feel unique and seem to have *something* that makes them enjoyable, whether it's a strong artistic vision or well-meaning ideas. Where do you draw the line between "flawed but enjoyable" and "not very good"?

Alis

Welcome back!! Have you checked out your city's aquarium? If so, what do you think of it?

Male Tears

welcome back, queen! hey, are you looking forward to Sonic Frontiers or the netflix show, Sonic Prime?

Patrick Wishon

Welcome back! Have you ever played the Fate/Stay Night visual novel? If so, how did you feel it compares to Tsukihime?

DaWaffleSupreme

Hey Hazel, thanks for always brightening my day with your amazing videos! I recently started getting into visual/sound novels by playing (and loving) Umineko: When they cry. I have played both DDLC and Katawa Shoujo in the past, are there any "novels" that were meaningful or impactful for you?

Mars

Great video Hazel! I didn't know you were located in Seattle! I'm planning on going to PAX West with my best friend. I was curious if you and your wife are planning to go as well? Also in regards to visual novels, I would like to recommend arguably the best visual novel made, Muv Luv (specifically "Alternative" but you kind of need to play all of them to get the full picture [all of them being "extra" and "Unlimited" as well])

Ashe Dreamthief

Welcome back!! Seeing you use a Getter Robo page transition made me curious, have you read much (or any) of Ken Ishikawa's work? There is of course the Nagai mentorship connection, but Ishikawa really came into his own style to the point where I'd argue that his composition matches and even exceeds Nagai (which makes Ishikawa's early passing very unfortunate).

Linus Wood

A month or two ago I thought of a bunch of questions to ask here that were all really thought-provoking and cool and would've made me look super intelligent and sexy and made everyone listening want to be friends with me... but I forgot all of them so I'll just ask something off the top of my head. How do you have the energy to constantly consume new media? I find it so draining to set aside time and give 100% of my attention to something, if I can even decide what I'm in the mood for. I also find it impossible to split my attention so I can't watch stuff while I'm doing other things (I had a Thor video on in the background that I had to pause so I could focus my brain on writing this comment!). Are you just built different or do you have some method of motivation and staying diligent about enlightening yourself through new experiences? Thanks for the great video as always, I hope you're well-rested and I'm glad you're back!!

Saoirse

What are the ideal elements of a good vegetarian meal? Like imo the best ones are ones that aren’t just substituting meat with another thing and are being their own delicious combo of stuff. Loved the video especially the Utena gag, I got so hyped for a second lol. The travelling section was super cozy, I hope there’s more segments like this in future videos. So glad you’re back thank you for making some of the best stuff on the internet!

SoDaft

Loved the video I really like the format it almost felt like a stream of consciousness. It felt really fresh and I thought it was really cool. It got me thinking about all the things I've been unable or unwilling to find the time to play/watch. I have a few things now that I have been putting off so long that it would be strange to actually watch or play them. I was wondering if you have anything like that? If you do is there any reason you put it off or did it just happen? For me it's devil may cry 4, I got that game the day it came out and at this point not playing is just a personality trait.

Luggy

Welcome back Hazel! I did not realize it had been two months since the last video. This bangin' summer sure went by fast! Seeing Melty Blood here made me want to ask: are you into fighting games? I find it interesting how the fighting game kinda eclipsed the original VN. It's to the point that most people are surprised when you tell them Melty Blood was based on an eroge. Also, how dare you bait me with Utena! That show is too good, please watch it when you can! Have a lovely day!

Elias Rosner

Welcome back! Glad to hear the vacation was restful in ways (as summer breaks should be). I really loved the chill vibes of this one. You mentiones not having gone to certain places in Seattle because they're "touristy" and I wonder what it is about a place being labeled "touristy" that gets residents of the area to generally avoid it? I feel the same way about places in NYC. Also, Coffee Cake was a great sport for this and I hope they had as much fun recording the titles as it seems.

ambientdroning

welcome back! I wanted to ask if there were any dishes other than the paella that you made during your break and would recommend? I am always looking for new recipes to try lol, thanks!

Dumbingway

yoo glad to have you back!

Morpheus

Hi Hazel! I remember you mentioning you wanted to do an "Anime fandoms around the world" and it just really intruiged me. Not anime but there was this Japanese Sherlock Holmes styled live action TV show called Shintaro/The Samurai that was HUGE in Australia in the 60s, like "They staged a live version play of Shintaro with the original Japanese cast in Australia and it sold more seats than the fucking Beatles concerts" huge. Like my dad talked about how when he was a kid he and his friends would go outside in their robes doing Samurai swordfights with gumtree sticks and using tin lids as shurikens. This was some Naruto Weeb shit but for Australian Boomers its mad. There's a whole documentary about it even (Shintaro! The Samurai Sensation That Swept a Nation) [I got the boxset for my dad for his birthday a few years ago. Can confirm it bangs even with the cheesy 60s era dubbing] I remember my auntie saying that Astro Boy was also pretty popular here but she could never watch it because she found the story behind Astro Boy too sad.

InariSu_

Glad to see you back! I'm jealous that your break was so productive, it feels like I barely did anything this summer. Big apologies if this is a question you get asked often, but if you were to recommend only 2 or 3 of the things you talked about in this video (besides the real-life stuff!) to someone with limited time, what would you recommend?

Brittny Okahara

I loved this video, and I especially loved hearing that you read visual novels with your wife! I was wondering how exactly you do that? Do you read from the same screen, one pushing buttons? Do it book club style, deciding to use the same story path? I’d love to enjoy one with my partner, I’m just not sure of the logistics.

Saoirse

Ooo I’m totally gonna check this out ty for mentioning it

Kill Wolfhead

Shout-out to fellow *FLCL* hater Alyssa! What are the other pieces of art you disagree about / how do you navigate that disagreement? Backup question: more Yuri recs? *Run Away with me, Girl* sent me, I'm crying rn.

Vibrii

Super cute video also welcome back Hazel! Only question I have is actually for Alisa! When did you start posting art online and do you have any funny or weird experiences of people trying to weed art out of you while growing up and posting art on the internet. When I was 11 and on deviantart I almost got swayed into drawing Frankie foster with big t!ts but ultimately didn't go through with it thankfully💀

Burnt_Ramen

Welcome back Hazel! Fantastic video as always. And as for a question, i remember you mentioning in your lain video, having played Milk inside a bag of milk inside a bag of milk. So while on the subject of visual novels, I'm wondering if you've played its sequel, Milk OUTSIDE a bag of milk OUTSIDE a bag of milk. If so what are your thoughts on it, and if not I think you'd really enjoy it. (I personally really liked it, i feel as if the dev improved a lot in the time between games, and was able to expand upon the themes of the first game with a higher degree of execution.)

Habibi

This is actually pretty interesting. In my country(Chile) super obscure anime has a big cult like fandoms because they aired on national tv. One example is Dotto Koni chan, an anime which was dubbed like Ghost Stories but with Latino idiosyncratic dialogues. Ghost Sweeper Mikami is also pretty beloved here

Macks Cook

so excited to see you had such a restful and generative break !! i don't normally have questions, but THEN i noticed you mentioned neon white in this video!! if you ended up getting to play it (i can vouch for the switch ver. being pretty smooth!) what are your opinions, if any, on the writing of the game? it's one of few games for me where i feel like the writing and story beats kind of take me out of an otherwise really well-realized experience, but maybe i just don't get it?

Celica

hello Hazel! it's nice to see you back again; this video perhaps wasn't a banger, but it was certainly enjoyable, relaxing, and a good time! arcueid unmatched :) as for a question: what line(s) in media catches you off guard and makes you laugh every time you hear it, no matter what?

larvapuppy

Glad you had a good break!! Hope you are feeling refreshed! My question: Do you have any recommendations for people wanting to try out visual novels? I've never read/played any and would like to try. Doesn't necessarily need to be eroge :p

newbanZo

Yoooooo welcome back glad the break went so well! This isn't a question, just wanted to say thank you for your OVA video! Recently started my own OVA journey, just going in blind to every OVA I run into. It's been a pretty wild ride lmao There have been some dark times, but I've also seen a lot of cool stuff that I never would have never watched otherwise so thanks again!!!!!11!!!!!1

Seth

W-W-W-Welcome back! I am curious; you mentioned that you have played most of the Touhou games. Which of these game(s) do you like the most, and do you have a favorite character?

James

Hi Hazel welcome back! one question I had is recently I started collecting anime art books and was wondering if you have any recommendations, could be from any artist and any show or manga.

Luciedotzip

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! first time posting a question, so please forgive my prattling: You've mentioned sound engineering experience prior to youtube; how much would you say that comes up in your work? E.g. how much post processing is done on the narration track? Is there any essential knowledge someone looking to make their own audio/visual content should have?

Greetings Hazel and Alyssa, Hope you two are doing well and feeling well rested after another treacherous move. As I write this, I'm currently in the process packing up my own stuff to move into my first apartment! So I can partially relate to the drudgery of the whole process. Hazel, early on in the video (and in the beginning of the return episode of pod spirit), you mentioned using this break to brush up on the fundamentals of learning & research. How has your research/learning process changed / been refined compared to your earlier attempts? Any tips & tricks for someone out of practice in the ways of research? I'm 2 years out of university and a lot of my prior knowledge a matter of hard research has seemingly atrophied 😅. Thank you kindly for your time. Hope you two have a lovely day! Sincerely, Kaleb

leafbladie

Your love of Ruri Dragon made me curious if you had seen/read Machikado Mazoku? I've heard a lot of comparisons between the two, so was just curious.

nortti

What language tools, if any, do you use when playing games in Japanese under emulation? Thinking of stuff like quick dictionary access and such.

Hymncat

Cozy video :) Have you ever had to work past ideas about what good art is and what kinds of art are worth engaging with imposed by other people and *society*? Especially considering your focus on japanese games and anime Thx

Maik Choco

Really enjoyed the video. <3

Kai Vee

Oh I'm glad you played the game based on Port Island (besides Persona 3). Our claims to fame!

T. K.

Hi folks. Glad y'all took some time, and are looking at doing this in a sustainable way. 1. Did you watch record of lotus war for more context on the metroidvania? 2. Are there any spices or dishes that are either of your culinary "white whale." 3. With what you said about nope, do you have any other pieces of western media that strike your agrarian vibes? More of an odd recommendation than a question. I found this originally on VHS in my closing local blockbuster in to 00's, but there was this odd Canadian indie film called "tokyo cowboy" from 1994 about a Japanese guy who is kinda hitting a dead end in life in Japan, and is obsessed with cowboys. So he decides to track down his childhood penpal from Canada who was a cowgirl as a kid. He gets there and it turns out she is now a non cowgirl artist & a lesbian, &things continue in a slightly uncomfortable culture class that ends in a bitter sweet note. Thanks!

Hooray my first Q&A since becoming a patron! So i know this video covers burnout a bit and I just wanted to know how you dealt with burnout from gaming media consumption itself? Just a problem I've been having of not being able to muster up the energy for new/old games in my collection, despite wanting to play a video game. Also have you gotten back to Grandia?

Namo

What is your favorite summertime snack/food?

curley arsoney

Not really a question but beginning college is hard and having a new video is really comforting rn :) thank you !!!!

Joe

Yesss I'm glad you took that time off. Keep doin you and take care of yourself. Regardless of them not being explicitly recommended, I'm still gonna look into a few games you showed in your vid. Especially that HAL Famicom VN

PAUPAUPAU

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! good to have you back, I was wondering since you watched Ultra Q if you have any interest in any other toku shows and if you ever plan to make a video about it, I started watching tokusatsu last year starting with Ultraman and it's been such a blast, It has change the way I see japanese media and I think western otaku spheres sometimes misunderstand or ignore the huge influence it has on manga/anime. It is like the "Jojo reference" meme but actually real lol also did you know Chiaki J. Konaka developed and was a main writer for Ultraman Gaia, wild stuff. Hope you are feeling much better!

Delilah Deckert

You recently watched Trigun so the big question is, who do you think the biggest himbo is? Vash or Wolfwood? Also, I'm glad to see you taking a break and feeling refreshed from it.

Ronnoco

Hey Hazel! I am so happy to see another video by you and pleased to hear you are going to follow your ninja way by going at your own pace. I became a patron right before your hiatus and honestly I felt very good about helping fund your summer after watching the video. This is my first comment, so here is my first patron question to you: Have you read Dandadan? It's also in Jump Plus and I picked it up recently after a rave review from a certain youtuber that came with tweets from several mangaka.

blogbourri

If you could adapt any 1990s sitcom into an existentialist mech anime which would it be

Kyle J Javelli

Howdy Hazel and Alyssa! It's good to see you back. I recently had an anime night where me and two others watched Millennium Actress, Dragon's Heaven, and topped it off with Kite. I had forgotten what had made it so adult. We were surprised but okay with the content and had some really interesting conversations the following days! My question is this, when you are seeking out transgressive media, what sort of context makes some graphic subjects more palatable than others? For example, I've literally had to turn off an episodes of Love Death and Robots from some minor gore or traumatic heroines being metaphorically assaulted yet Kite just captured all of us despite way more violence and sex. PS. If you are looking for fun, cheap Seattle things I strongly recommend heading to Ballard for the Nordic Heritage Museum and the nearby Locks. The museum shows a history of industry and leftist politics through a really cool cultural lens, and the Locks have a bunch of otters swimming nearby. Seattle is a second home dear to my heart so I'd love to recommend more.

Nicolate

Welcome back! I've had my eyes set on Metal Slader Glory for a while due to the idea of a Hal Laboratory VN being kinda neat but your video sold me on it and it was truly fantastic.. My question is have you seen the one shot manga that's included inside the manual of the game and if so what were your thoughts on it and just the concept of having a manga as an introduction to a video game universe built in? (Cause i honestly find that so damn cool)

SerenityVenus

Hi! Out of curiosity, did you ever manage to finish Grandia, and if so, what did you think?

Casper Rawshark

Welcome back Hazel! :) I had a 14 hour flight I was just about to get on so was a treat when I saw you'd uploaded this. Had just enough time to download to my phone so I could watch multiple times in the sky and take notes :)

Flann

after watching the first season of sailor moon, who did you think you'd like the best before going into it and who ended up being your favorite character in the end? Also you mentioned Ebisu sharing Misato's voice actor, but Kotono Mitsuishi actually voices Usagi as well, apparently she was a giant fan of the manga and basically petitioned for herself to voice the hamster in the anime adaptation lol

Papa Phoenix

hi Hazel! I don’t think I have a question but I just wanted to say that I love this video and I hope you make more like these, I just like hearing peoples quick thoughts on media they consumed/stuff they did in a period of time and gives me things to engage with. Big fan of your stuff! much love :)

Eri Cruz

Hey Hazel! Long time viewer, recent patron. There are many creators I enjoy for various reasons but the videos you make hit in such a niche and special way for me that I can't really describe. Your videos capture the essence of very specific, positive times in life. I wish I could bottle that feeling into a fragrance - its one of a kind!

Penny Vath

youtube did you so wrong! I didnt even know this came out until I checked Patreon. I love the structure of these and hope you'll do some more! Since you loved the Ib remake so much, is there any other old rpgmaker game you would want to have a remake? (hard mode no re:kinder) As always your videos made me go in the trenches on backloggd and I forgot just how fascinating old pc fighting games can be. https://youtu.be/_oUq97IpV0Q

SegaMan

Firstly, welcome back! Glad to hear that things have been well and i'm really looking forward to your future projects! For my question, I was wondering what some of your favorite western games are? (also what speech-to-text program were you were using for some of the titles in your video? I recognize those voices but I cannot for the life of me remember what the program is called.)

Bimmy

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! Is there a cozy game that you like to just move around in? I guess an example for me is Mario Sunshine, I just like running and jumping around

Deso's Prophet

This isn't a question, but if you like Chainsaw Man and fujimoto's other work, you should check out Dandadan. It's on VIZ, and made by one of fujimoto's assistants from Fire Punch. The first chapter will surprise you, I promise.

Katsunei

Hello! I was wondering if you or your wife has tried the visual novel called Corpse Factory since you two seem to be into the kinda goth 2000s internet kinda vibe. It’s a new game but the premise reminds me of a creepy pasta from the 2000s because you play as a girl who takes joy in dressing up corpses and delivering them to people who had their name written on a website I probably explained it terribly mostly because I tried keeping the post short, sorry, it has an amazing menu theme btw

Bowen

Hi!!! my question is: How do you know if youre at the point where youre done with your research for a specific video? I feel like I have been struggling on finding a 'stopping point' while researching stuff for projects, I keep putting off actually compiling all my research because I end up feeling like there are always more tangentially related topics that I could learn more about, so I was curious if you'd have any insight on when to know youre done? (Or at least done enough to compile it into a video and share the information)

Madeline Knappenberger

Hi Hazel! Glad you could take some time off and recharge. It's super important. Really happy to see a new video! Have you ever/ do you think you'd ever run a panel at Sakura Con? It's also my home con and I think your videos would translate really well into that format.

hunter a.

hey hazel + alyssa! since the saban moon pilot has emerged and you talked about finally watching sailor moon for the first time, it got me thinking about the way that i first saw sailor moon, which was a dvd of the live action drama i found at a thrift store as a kid. i loved it so much ("rewatched the four eps that were on the one disc over and over again" loved it), which in some ways makes me wish we'd gotten more saban moon since i'm sure that would've found an audience in its own way. my question is basically this: are there any live action adaptations that you think have actually done justice to their source material? i haven't returned to the sailor moon drama since childhood but i remember it being extremely earnest, even if it wasn't as "good" as the original.

Kitty ( The cursed existence of financial instability ) fo

welcome back, i hope that your move was not entirely awful. when you move somewhere, do you have to pack up a bunch of physical books or analog media is most of it just picking up a hard drive and computer?

Zane

The amount of stuff you were able to consume/examine/experience in that timeframe leaves me kinda speechless. I get the feeling I might be depressed and unmotivated by comparison, but I'd love to change that and really expand my knowledge base a lot more. I totally understand if it's too general and self-helpy to answer, but I'd be delighted to hear if you have any neat tricks to psyche yourself up for research and consumption, or if it's just a natural sense of wonder and curiosity pulling you into all these disparate pieces of entertainment. Either way the byproduct has been thoroughly entertaining to see secondhand so I'm happy to watch regardless. Cheers and y'all have a lovely time.
