Since you recommended Doukyuusei: Bangin' Summer, my spouse and I played it and absolutely loved it, definitely a masterpiece. I was wondering who your favorite characters/routes were. Reiko and Satomi were my faves but Mako's route blew my mind

Rocía G

Perhaps a simplistic question, but what's your favorite pokemon?

Sebastian Furman

Favorite fujimoto works and what re your thoughts on mapping wanting to animate all of his previous works

actually a dawg

How do yall feel about the current state of pokemon design? As much as I love some of the regional variants and parallel evolutions (ie diglett and wiglett), I am definitely in the camp of being bored of starters that just evolve into a human ass person. (Ps sorry if this is double dipping, but can you give us anymore info on love in a bottle or its development process? Looks super cool)

Hunter Clifton Mann

Oh wow. I remember the satanic panic surrounding pokemon fairly well. Anyway, I’m going to japan soon and wanted a good suggestion for a place to visit! Where would you go?

DonutTHOT

hi, your elfen lied video hit me with some sort of creative energy beam, and now i'm working on a video essay. do you have any tips/warnings for someone doing this for the first time?

Luggy

Pokemon's satanic craze will always remind me of Hypnospace Outlaw's parody of the whole thing. Shoutouts to this game and its upcoming sequel. Anyway, how have you been enjoying Bocchi the Rock so far? I dunno if this was asked before but I saw you gush about it a while back and it's definitely the biggest "hazel core" anime of the moment. Love you two, keep on rocking and happy holidays!

Male Tears

Hey y’all! This episode kinda hit close to home. I remember the Pokémon craze when it hit the states and I was in the target demographic. Do you remember the promotional Burger King x Pokémon toys that were all the rage?

No Good

For sure remembering some of this! Love the lightning bolts in the first book, great design! Q: Have you ever checked out Pokemon bans from other places? The gambling thing came around in certain Arab nations as well apparently (as well as Pokemon promoting Zionism???) and was apparently banned in Turkey when a little girl tried to fly like a Pokemon, supposedly, and injured herself. Also Pokemon GO tracking stuff but everyone on earth seems to have accepted this. I wonder if overseas fans have crazy local stories. All for a game about funny little creatures! XD

dnys

on no! i would have loved some sentimental/preachy/gay rambling about pokemon, but alas. how are you finding the newest jansksterpiece? i had a super good time with it, lot of 'they really went there' moments for a pokemon game.

arseholetep the insufferable

Great video as always! The soundtrack to your videos is always something i look forward to and i was wondering what your process for picking the songs was?

Zane

I was a lucky kid. My parents always engaged with things open-mindedly and always had confidence in my ability to sort right/wrong and fiction/reality. They were often permissive of me engaging with material outside my age range, even my dad and I bonding over Mortal Kombat 2 as early as age 5. I can remember several instances of them calmly explaining the merits of several pop culture trends (pokemon very included) in an attempt to demystify them to other parents who had been roped in by the hysteric fear mongers of the era. Forever grateful to have such positive influence so early in life. With that sentimentality aside, I recently embarked on the adventure of experiencing Tsukihime to completion out of my enjoyment of the Melty Blood spinoffs. I liked the core of the story despite some obvious flaws and I've been wondering since your summer vacation video if you had a favorite Herione. (Mine's Hisui until MB, then Sion) Understandable if I rambled on too long for this to be read during the video. Cheers and continued prosperity in your future endeavors!

Marie Emari

Hello Hazel and Alyssa! Not sure if this question has been asked before, but what is your usual process for scripting videos? In particular, the little bit at the beginning with the Ekans at the start had I'm curious if you have an idea for visuals beforehand or if it just comes to you when you're editing. If that question's already been asked, if you had to live in just one town in Pokemon, which would it be? Hope y'all have a merry Christmas and/or happy new year!

Seth

Hello, and happy holidays to you two! Two quick questions: are either of you still invested in Pokémon nowadays, and what is your favorite game/generation? Really looking forward to the next vid, whatever it may be!

somefeatures

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! Lovely video as always. Do you have any tips for getting comfortable recording voiceover? I think part of what makes your most nuanced videos so digestible is that you sound so confident and relaxed delivering what, in writing my own scripts, I’ve realized must be some pretty wordy prose on the page. Maybe I should just try a completely different approach since we share a lot of taste in background music and I don’t want to fully steal the texture of your channel haha. But you always sound very articulate, so I’m still curious if you have any strategy or it’s just come to you naturally with practice. also omg that second book’s cover is so fucked up that era of design was insane

Arpaigeio

If you could have a gym leader/elite four type and team what would you pick?

Ash

Here's a very loosely related question: What starter did you pick in your first Pokémon game and why (if you remember)?

EstherKitsoone

Hello! Since you were so big into the poke-mania of the day, what were your thoughts (both then and now) of the many other franchises that were then often labeled as "pokemon rip-offs" (ie. Digimon or Monster Rancher)? Did you try and maybe get attached to any or did you just sick to pure pokemon?

rio ranger

opinions on katawa shoujo?

newbanZo

Do either of you have any embarrassing/ traumatic pokemon related childhood stories, like cards stolen, game erasures etc? I remember getting very upset and getting into a full on yelling/ crying fight with my friend because they were completly unwilling to even consider trading pokemon cards with me. I dont *think* that's what ended our friendship, at that point we were going to different schools and weren't as close, but I also dont remember going over to his house after that lmao Shit now that I think about it this was after I transfered from a private Christian school to public school maybe I *was* possessed by a pocket monster. Totally unrelated but Alyssa mentioned an interest in collecting garage kits in a Q&A a while back (I think? Lmao). Just wanted to say that if you (or anyone reading this) wanted any help with assembling/ painting models feel free to hit me up. I play Warhammer 40K so I have put together and painted a few models lol

Toby Ray Serrano

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! Do you have any obscure Game Boy games you would recommend?

Habibi

Hey Hazel and Alyssa! I have a question about bootleg Pokemon games. Is there any of them that you would consider specially cursed? Some are really weird. Also, have you heard about the “Ataque al anime” video on Youtube? It is hilarious and pretty famous in the anime Spanish-speaking community since it actually aired on Mexican TV. Basically is a panel of “experts” saying that Pikachu and Evangelion are satanic and a middle aged Christian woman showing some cultured content to the audience. Pure perfection!

Alexander Gatto

Hello hazel and Alyssa! Unrelated to the while Pokemon thing but it's quite clear from your your videos that you read visual novels. I don't remember if you have or not, so I'm wondering if you've ever read of the When They Cry series (Higurashi, Umineko) and if so, what you think of them and perhaps other Ryuukishi07 works.

Hey Folks, I hope y’all are doing well. To ask a question I feel there could be a comparison drawn between the gameboy game Pokemon’s supported success from it’s Anime in the 90’s and Cyberpunk’s renewed social capital from it’s own companion anime. I have also been seeing alot of positive buzz when Nissin has been using anime in it’s adverts. I know the creator of Gundam feels anime being used in this way is improper, but I was wondering if, for fun, you two had any games, or food/everyday goods that you think deserve incredibly animated Anime commercials. Nissin ad for reference: https://youtu.be/JMtQD4tzitg Article about Gundam Director being an old man: https://animehunch.com/using-anime-in-daily-life-is-polluting-japanese-culture-says-gundam-director/ This is not a question, ( I thought it was when I started writing,) but a series of recollections about early IRL pokemon from when I was 8 ~10 years old in the 90s, so an “eyewitness account” maybe. But read at your discretion. This video’s topic was a bit of a flashback for me, as I remember hearing first about Pokemon on the kitchen radio playing NPR when I was a kid. It was those initial reports about the Porygon episode that first made me take some notice. Months later, I had been on a Godzilla kick, renting the Kaiju, and sometimes Anime, VHS from the local blockbuster. (The ‘96 zilla was a bit of a let down.) There was an anime store in the big city I got to visit every few months, and I knew they had Godzilla stuff with things from Dragon-Ball and Sailor-moon (which I had caught a few episodes of airing early in the morning,) along with some stuff from My Neighbor Totoro. I started seeing Pokemon stuff in that shop, but had no real context for what it was other than “Pocket Monsters,” with some sort of round yellow monster. Eventually in the fall of 97, I was flipping through channels after school, and on UPN, I thought I saw what I thought was “Anime Mothra,” which I eventually learned was called Butterfree, and that whole episode blew my mind. I was hooked, and looking it up by keyword on AOL, and I made sure to watch every episode I could. For a while I was telling the perplexed adults in my life it was the show from Japan that gave kids seizures, and their bewildered looks did nothing to dampen my joy. (I remember the episode “good bye butterfree” making me cry a bit though.) Later on, I was lucky enough to get a copy of Blue version, and I went to a pokemon event at a local mall. I was there to get a Mew from a machine hooked up to my gameboy (after messing with the truck did nothing,) and there where a few people outside holding signs with a oddly drawn Pikachu, maybe with horns, and "Mark of the Beast'' written under it, so yeah, people where kinda turned up about the whole thing. Thanks as always, looking forward to the next video.

So, I've been wondering this for a bit. What are some beige whales of you guys have? I don't know why, but I feel you'd be the sort to watch Cathode Ray Dude (he's another lefty and he talks about cameras and early digital tech between the 70's and 00's); but if not, a beige whale is something you kinda have wanted for a long time but are never in search of. A thing you don't bother to bookmark on ebay but would get if you saw it if it ever showed up for cheap.

ItsRileyMe

Also, a story. I have no clue if sharing here works, but it is related to a vid. This was last year and after the VHS video. I had download some of the stuff I thought was interesting onto the ssd I carry around - including Butt Attack Punisher Girl - periodically going through them during downtime. I was invited to a Halloween event by a friend. Not feeling it at the time, I moved into a corner, plugged my drive into my phone, put on earbuds, and watched Butt Attack Punisher Girl Gautaman to my soon regret. During the scene in the courtyard, as a dude is ripping the clothes off of girls, a girl leans over my phone to see my screen. I first notice her when she screams "ARE YOU WATCHING PORN?!" I just kinda froze for a bit as people turned. My first reaction was to do finger-guns and whisper "no" from my now suddenly dry throat. After a very awkward silence, she walked back to her group... where my friend was sitting... I learned later that he had invited me to introduce me to his friends and that girl... She was checking on me to see if I was doing alright because I was alone... Other than some online chats, I didn't speak to anyone for the couple of weeks. I moved out of that building that summer. It's not because of that incident, but I find the idea of people there witnessing that, seeing me mope around, disappear, and then assume it was all related very funny.

TortoiseCannabis

Hey Hazel and Alyssa wanted to know if you two had seen Pantheon yet and what your guys thoughts were on it. Its very anime inspired with reference to Evangelion and paranoia agent and seemingly having one of the characters design based on Motoko from ghost in the shell, also if you have any recommendations for some of your favorite cyberpunk or sci-fi anime or manga id love to hear them especially the more obscure ones.

cafememo

Hi! Great vid as always. I wanted to know if you guys had any games, or any media in general if that's an easier question, that makes you say "oh shit, my parents would be MAD if they saw me playing/watching this as a kid/teenager" in recent memory? Particularly in terms of relatively innocuous media with maybe just one or two things that stand out as not family friendly. Thanks!

Brandon Linton

Happy holidays, hazel and Alyssa! The topic of Pokemania in the early years calls to mind when you touched on the fansites surrounding Pokemon in the time before Pokemon was as standardized as a staple. One site I remember finding when I was a kid had an 'Ask Pigeotto' column for questions about the games, anime, etc. On it's own it doesn't stand out, but there was also a 'Dark Pigeotto' that would answer questions from time to time, but they'd either lie about the answer or be kinda sarcastic and rude. I remember this being the first time I was exposed to mild cussing on the internet, but moreover the first time I ever thought a site being curated and written by someone based on feedback, as opposed to just pages that appeared. (I was about 11 when this happened, in all fairness) My questions are: 1) do either of you fondly remember any Pokemon-related fansites that aren't around anymore with this kind of playful, participatory thing going on? I know you both made things to put online, but did either of you ever participate in someone else's creation and curation in this way? and 2) Does 'Ask Pigeotto' ring any bells to either of you or anyone out there, or is this doomed to be knowledge I must carry alone???

martyb

I really enjoyed the “anime countryside” video - it made a lot of things click for me and introduced me to a handful of shows that I now really love. In that vein - have y’all played Yakuza 5? There’s this really wonderful moment in what is otherwise a chaotic, convoluted, fantastical (but very good imo) game where badass archetype Taiga Saejima winds up stranded in a snowy hunting town somewhere up on Hokkaido. It’s very quiet, slow-paced section (right between an epic jailbreak and some confusing yakuza drama) where he has to learn how to sustainably hunt and trap animals, cares for a crotchety old hunter who rescued him, and comes to understand the aging townspeople’s respect for nature, even the parts that are trying to kill them. The Yakuza games all have super chill and immersive side-stories that you can just lose yourself in (fishing! dancing! taxi driver! pocket car racing!) and I was wondering if you had thoughts on any of those.

SerenityVenus

Hallo Hazel and Alyssa! Has there been any show that changed you in anyway? Perhaps changed your outlook on something, or how you thought about something?

Alis

What do you think the most mid/overhyped/pokemon is? What about the most underrated one?

James

Which would you recommend for a first pokémon game?

RubyRat

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! This is totally unrelated to the video topic, but I just started katawa shoujo after hearing you talk about it a few times in your videos, and I was wondering if there are any other VNs (of any genre or intensity) that you particularly enjoyed/would recommend to someone who isn't very familiar with a lot of them?

Peter Ciccolo

OK, so Pokemon certainly wasn't created by a cabal of secret Satanists. ...but if it were, what would the major differences be, and would they improve or harm the series as a whole?

KrasserBub

Hi yall, since its relevant again right now because of the new Pokemon game releases, whats your current outlook on the pokemon franchise overall at the moment?

Morpheus

Hi! This video on Pokemania was a blast to the past, especially as someone who basically was one of those really young kids who got knee deep OBSESSED with Pokemon during that first wave of Pokemania and never stopped. My question is, related to this video topic, have you read the book Millennial Monsters: Japanese Toys and the Global Imagination? I read it a while ago and found it to be a really insightful and great piece into how Japanese pop culture was starting to really get a hold of American (Anglophonic?) youths in the 1990s through properties like Power Rangers, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z and Tamagachi and how that culimated in the Pokemania (as well as how Pokemania both in Japan and abroad was just a right place at the right time that really was bolstered by a growing alienation due to developments in modernity and the rise of internet usage outside of geek and techhead spaces)

Solar115

Hi Hazel/Alyssa, Growing up, I was not a huge fan of Pokemon though I did play Pokemon platinum for about 75 hours or so before getting hooked on something else, probably Armored Core For Answer if my memory serves me right (yes I do actively start head bobbing when I hear Precious Park in your videos.) However, the unhinged antics of Christian watch dog group portrayed in your video interested me. As I'm from Eastern Canada I would like to know about the state of Christian Watch Dog and Conservative groups in certain areas the United States. Where I live these organisations thankfully aren't particularly active to the point where they consistently make any headline news where I live. I only have to deal with a few relatives that have truly abhorrent beliefs. Feel free to discard this question if you don't want to answer it, but I want to ask how prevalent are these groups in States where you have lived? If yes, then for the sake of levity are there any particularly funny stories or embarrassing failures these organisations were infamous for that you know of? You videos are always great. Thanks for reading my question, Solar115

Katsunei

Hey Alyssa & Hazel I was wondering if you both have a method to keep your morale up when trying to self learn a new or rusty skill? I love drawing and painting daily but some days it can get so tiring where I feel like “what’s the point”. Learning Japanese I have trouble being motivated with as well.

John Sandfort

You mentioned the concerns that some had about Pokemon (and specifically the card game) as potential gambling. Indeed, my elementary school banned Pokemon Cards for that reason. At the time I thought it was stupid, and that grown-ups didn't understand the game and assumed it was like poker or something My question is: do you think these concerned adults were on to something? We've been seeing gacha and blind boxes in online games regulated as gambling in some regions, and I think those things feed on a similar impulse to TCG booster packs. Maybe this is something for the Pokemania video, but in your research, did you come across anything about kids blowing tons of their parents money pulling for foils?

Penny Vath

thank you for the video! my girlfriend and I bonded over your videos (: are we getting Slime Wives 2 in 2023?

Twilight Dusk

I'll go ahead and ask the obvious, hard hitting question: Which pokemon would you say is the most satanic?

Rmuda

Hello there, great video as always! My question for both of you is if you had to replace Pokemon's place in pop culture from your childhood or in the present day with another franchise entirely, what series would you choose? Alternately, what would be the funniest?

Funktimer

Hi! When you were filming best cat during the video I saw an anime figurine on a computer destk. What character is it of? I couldn't tell. I think it had purple hair?

astrozach

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! Two completely unrelated questions both to the video and in relation to each other lol - I just recently watched the Eva rebuild movies. (like literally two hours ago, they were playing in theaters haha) What's your overall opinion on them? Do you think that they added anything new/had different, important things to say than the original series + EoE? (personally, I enjoyed them aside from a few minor things) Second question is - I know you've mentioned before how you've moved to a few different places in your life. As it happens, I've also recently moved a bit away from home. I'm curious as to how you navigated that and if you have anything you would say to a young person who moved to a new town with no friends. (;_;)

Elijah Sadiky

Hi Hazel and Alyssa (and Wander <3), I was just wondering if either of y'all had any favorite animal or mascot characters from anime/manga or other media? Personally I'm a big fan of the amorphous black cats found in various shows (namely the cat from FLCL).

HYPER DEATH ASCENDED QUEER LATINO GOD MODE KILLER

hi hazel and alyssa! i've been reading kotaro lives alone after watching the anime some time ago and was wondering if there's a piece of media you might have judged unfairly at first only to come to really enjoy once you've finished it? i originally watched the anime with friends on discord looking for something to watch on netflix and we found the anime on our recommended list. the art style looked kinda dumb (all the kids in the anime have massive fucking heads and almost everyone has a bland expression) and thought the description for it sounded like a typical slice of life so we decided to watch it. after getting through two episodes though i got really invested in it and started to watch the rest by myself. by the time i got to the last episode i legitimately started to tear up which wasn't at all what i expected when i first started.

Olshay

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! I have two questions: 1) You've mentioned before playing the Danganronpa visual novels, have you engaged with other DR material outside of them? I'm specifically wondering About Ultra Despair Girls, The DR3 anime and the Komaeda OVA. 2) Do you have any franchises you wish got an OVA adaptation? A story that would adapt well into a 40-50 minute runtime, maybe across few episodes. For me it's the Persona 2 dualogy, because one of the games Bonus disc had a four minute long Anime trailer for the dualogy and i'm coping hard there wasn't a full thing.

larvapuppy

Favourite pokemon game/region of all time? :)

HogfatherD23

Hey Hazel and also Alyssa! I’ve been a viewer for about a year, but I’m pretty new to patreon, so yours was a perfect start! Despite obsessively rewatching your content over an over again, I am a complete newbie to anime. Some of the terms in your videos go over my head and I find myself wondering if you’ve ever considered making a video for people who are just getting into anime. Like the terminology, the go to starters, so on.

Elias Rosner

Hi Hazel and Alyssa! First up, thank you for the wonderful Wander break in the vid. Always happy to see his flat floofy face! I guess I wanna know if you had fun making a video like this. With all the shots of book pages, which reminded me of that bonus art book vid you did a while back, it must've been a challenge to figure out the best way to highlight the bug fuck wild passages without it being too static or repetitive.

Chicanery

Hello Hazel and Alyssa. As I was watching the Pokémon video I was struck by your choices in clips (Malcolm in the Middle). I realised that, despite living in a completely different country (Northern Ireland), your choices in media are completely legible and understood as that of a late 20s person in the year 2022. The question is this: what are your feelings on the global media landscape being so homogenised and universal that another late 20s nerdy trans woman in another country had the same media experience as you? Also, isn't that preacher the "why" guy from Vine?

Doozy_Uzi

Hey Hazel and Alyssa. Great video as always my question is I imagine you both have some favorite pokemon designs but who do you think are the ugliest Pokemon, just some absolutly nasty lookin freaks?

SoDaft

Hi this was a fantastic video, it's one of those things people are aware of but don't tend to look too deep into. My question is what Pokémon game do you like the most? I'm a 2000s baby so I swear by Pokémon platinum I will always big up Pokémon ranger though all of those games are just good fun.

JoyceDivision

Hello Hazel & Alyssa, I started delving into the media listed in the Anime countryside video and I noticed a tendency for some shows to act like an instruction manual on how to get started on a hobby. Do you know if there is a specific name for this "genre" iyashikei or if this just a chance for manga to info dump about their interests? Is this an ongoing trend in manga/anime that I just haven't noticed before ?

StuTheShoe

Hi there Hazel and Alyssa! Thanks for all the quality videos. I never really comment but wanted to ask as you might have some interesting insight: Why do you think it is that the modern gaming populous seems generally hostile to turn-based RPGs, thinking they should be left in the past, but still seems to love Pokémon, an extremely turn-based RPG? PS - I love turn-based RPGs but couldn't get into Pokémon. I cancelled my childhood Nintendo Power subscription in late '99 after it felt like every issue had 20 pages dedicated entirely to Pokémon.

Datafox

Hello, thank you for another amusing video. Were you surprised by the content of either of the books?

Juan

What are some of your favorite songs or works by Mariko Goto?

Prog boi

Hello from a fellow Sonoma County-ite! Hope yall are doing well. My question is have you seen or played the super weird fucked up anti-pokemon games that PETA made way back when? I remember seeing them when I was a younger teen and whoo boy they were WILD. Anyways, happy holidays!

nolongang

fantastic video hazel! you‘ve been my literal favorite youtuber this past year! also damn was not expecting my wedding question to lead to such a lore bomb! regardless, im glad y’all have been happy and together all this time. (i thought it was really cute that you got each other rings anyways :)) that aside, my question for you is: were you ever approached by any major barriers during the writing process? if not, i kinda just wanna hear about the originally sappy ending u had planned out lmao. (sorry if that was A LOT for u to read alyssa)

Soda Boi

Hey Hazel and Alyssa! One of the best things I think the Pokemon anime brought us was the American opening theme song. Super iconic and and everyone loves it. That got me thinking about the small trend dubbing had that would translate or replace the opening theme songs for anime that were brought here, like with Yu Yu Hakusho, Tenchi, Naruto, and others. So, What is your favorite dubbed anime opening?
