The Northlander

Oh I KNOW Amazing Web Head was excited for this one!

It's not exactly the same as the gang Joker used, the moniker kinda just passes along. Although I knew you'd love Melanie once you got to her, she has some amazing stuff ahead.

I was waiting for this episode as it was especially perfect since Valentine's Day happened just recently. I was ready for you to meet Melanie as I do think her and Terry have great chemistry. I always interpreted Bruce getting mad at Terry for letting the love he has for Melanie and even Dana first was because Bruce doesn't really allow himself to get attached to the lovers he has. Like he's obviously not incapable of love as he said at the end, "let me tell you about a woman named Selina Kyle." And I know he loves Talia, despite some of the things she's done. But Bruce doesn't prioritize romantic relationships as much because of his dedication to his mission. As he said to Alfred in Mask of the Phantasm when talking about Andrea, "I can't put myself on the line if someone's waiting for me at home." Bruce is so focused on the mission itself and it's probably one of the reasons why he's alone because he doesn't make time for other things like the other Batfamily members do. It's often why a lot of time he comes off as very cold to them and how sometimes he'll kind of scoff or make a remark when regards to their romantic partners. He's even done that to Superman in the Public Enemies movie. When Superman arrived late for a mission they were on together, Bruce was like what took you and Clark said you wouldn't understand. And then Bruce said "Lois?" And when Clark was like yup, Bruce was like "you're right." So I think Bruce, while he does love, he just doesn't make it important to his life cause his mission and war on crime is where his true devotion is. Cause like how he's cold to his Batfamily, he can also be cold to his lovers too. I'm happy you got to meet the Royal Flush Gang again. This version is more close to what they're usually like as the one you met in Justice League had a different origin as Joker was the one who took a bunch of kids that were experimented on by the government and created the group itself. Here this version is more close to how they are in the comics where it's just a gang. There is connections to Joker in the comics with the Royal Flush Gang but it's more so that he works with them/hires them, instead of him creating them like he did in Justice League. Another thing is the Ace in Justice League was a little girl and the one in this show is a big android robot, which is why you never see him out of the costume or see his face like the other members. I'm so glad you're still loving the show a ton. And I love that you love the Beyond suit itself. It's definitely one of the coolest Batsuits ever designed and something I know a lot of people love. Even people who unfortunately haven't seen the show but have seen it in games that feature it as an alternate skin like in the Arkham games. It's pretty cool how the suit still works for the time period that it's in. Like I'm not sure when Bruce started wearing the Beyond suit as we only know he was wearing it when he retired in 2019. But with the show taking place 20 years after that in 2039, it's great to know that despite it being a pretty old suit, it still works well with Terry. I also love the futuristic flying Batmobile and how inside the car has that red lighting. Can't wait for you to get to the next episode cause it's another good one! Also can't wait for more DC stuff coming with Injustice 2 and the next DCAMU movie, Reign of the Supermen. Or if you want, you can watch a random DC Elseworld movie. Like Superman Red Son is one I love and I know you mentioned wanting to watch it. But can't wait either way!

Great reaction! Good one to react in Valentine’s Day month. Yea Valentines passed, but this still works. This is one of my favorites because it has one of best characters being Melanie as well as the best ship in this show. Yes people do ship them. More than Dana but Dana is still a cool character. As you saw, Melanie/Ten is Terry’s Catwoman but different than Selina in that Melanie wants to leave the criminal life but unfortunately Terry had to turn her in. The ending with him and Bruce was wholesome but Bruce telling him about Selina was emotional cause of that fact after all these years, he still thinks about her. It’s sad but sweet. Clearly a lot of Batcat fans like myself were smiling/teary there lol. DC needs to pull their act together to just let them be together even though I like them as twin flames lol.

Continuing from the Spider-Man connections, Terry & Melanie’s dynamic is somewhat similar to a relationship between Peter & another character you haven’t met but she’s in a lot of Spidey content and not featured in the films yet. Didn’t say it last reaction, but Shriek is meant to be a nod to Spider-Man villain: The Shocker. :)

I know the Royal Flush Gang from Justice League are not connected to the one in Batman Beyond, but I always head-cannoned that Joker knowingly stole the Royal Flush Gang identity for his team from the so called "aristocrats of crime" just to mess with them or to capitalize on their name to boost ratings. It just seems like something he would do.

Terry was really going through it in this one against that Royal Flush Gang. Also he and Dana had an argument and just broke it off, then he met Melanie and they were starting to like each other for a while. Then her cold moms persuaded her into choosing between Terry and the family and she chose family, which was a bad mistake. Ya know Rose from "Titanic" did a lot better when she chose Jack and didn't listen to HER cold moms.

'How's the new girl?' 'She's a 10, but...' Very well-regarded episode with what is probably the show's most popular ship. In order of release this is actually the first appearance of the Royal Flush Gang (10, Jack, Queen, King, Ace, beats everything, suit doesn't matter), then they were retroactively introduced in the Wild Cards episode of Justice League later. The timeline is a bit janky, but we can infer that the first RFG became their own thing separate from Joker, focusing more on an aristocrat theme than Joker's comedic mayhem, bringing in descendants to take over the roles when the previous ones age out. The new members lack the first generation's Metahuman powers and make up for it with skills and gadgets instead. Melanie's struggles and desire to escape her abusive family bring to mind the Godfather films. King (George Lazenby) being someone who can only hold his family together by force, which creates all kinds of strain on everyone.

I love your takes on Batman and his attachment issues. He's such an interesting character because he is aware of his 'faults' but doesn't want to completely fix them, especially in this universe. He chose loneliness over settling down and longterm family, to preserve and prioritize Batman. He's honest about it though, which is likely why him and Selina are twin flames and don't have TOO much rupture, because they both are flighty. And I agree about Talia. I think she loved him best she could given her family dynamic and capacity. And yeah I bet Bruce put a looot of effort into tinkering around with that suit, especially if you think about the Batkids leaving home/Gotham, Alfred passing, and all the time he spent alone, even before he gives up Batman. Do you think he found other people like Alfred and Lucius to help with the engineering aspects, or do you think he worked on it all alone?
