The episode that caused me to buy and play the game immediately cause i couldnt wait 💀 (best decision ever)

ksg

Since you guys have seen the entire season, out of curiosity, which episode was your favorite? If any.

RH

just rolled myself one, time for some proper devastation

RH

i’d like to think it’s episode 6 but i’m curious if it isn’t which one it would be, this season is dark asf

TeaDrinker3000

Guess you could say it was *puts sunglass on* The Last Of Him... (I've literally been waiting so many years to make this joke since the show was announced and it was worth it 😭)

BigJo H

Fantastic episode and yeah it happens like that in the game minus a few details. It was a very bold choice and I’m glad the show didn’t back down on it. I wish they kept being bold in the future episodes

Josef

Y'all should definitely watch the game cutscenes (which are all available on youtube) The story is definitely told much better in the game in my opinion

Mike

(They did back down a bit by giving us all that Abby backstory.)

Michael M

Now I can't wait for Milena to meet Joan (aka Big Red) in Mad Men.

ksg

Fun Fact: Before filming Joels death scene, Bella was listening to "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" on repeat. They said that hyping themselves up before such an emotional scene allowed for them to crash harder into devastation.

Mike

As an individual piece of television, this probably my favourite episode of the season. (How it works as part of the whole, and what it sets up for the rest of the season, is a different story.) Terrific performances by Kaitlyn Dever and Bella Ramsey, and using that Ashley Johnson song at the end is basically a cheat code. And while I think that the attack on Jackson was ultimately a pretty hollow suspense sequence, you can't say it wasn't an awesome spectacle and effective distraction for what was coming with Joel. Putting aside my thoughts on the rest of the season, they had to nail the shock and brutality of Joel's death for the story to even have a chance at working. And I think they pulled it off, even if I prefer the version in the game. But man, I don't about all that added dialogue between Abby & Joel... Edit: OK, maybe I won't put aside my thoughts on the rest of the season, because most of their post-show conversation was about whether Abby's actions here were justified compared to what Joel did in SLC. I think this gets to the heart of the mistake of revealing Abby's motivation ahead of time. Yes, there is an important "eye for an eye" theme to unpack in this story... eventually. But by giving away the game so early, Mazin has muddied the emotional clarity of the moment and especially the reflexive desire for revenge in the audience. I read a comment today that the most important character arc in TLOU2 is actually the player's character arc. Giving the audience all of Abby's backstory already, and asking us to wrestle with "was it justified?" already, robs the audience of the foundation of that character arc: unreserved anger at the character. (Not to mention how giving us more information than Ellie un-syncs us from her parallel arc of discovery this season.)

SwampFox95

These episodes prove that Bella Ramsey has the chops to portray a game-accurate Ellie, it was just a matter of if the script would support that.

Kara

Milena joining the secret but popular club of lesbians who are strangely into Pedro Pascal 😭🙏 the podcasting era of the channel with the leaning into the dual microphones is sending me btw This is one of the better eps of the season for me. Kaitlyn Dever is so good but I wish we got buff Abby (ALLY ✊🏳️‍🌈) in the show, she's absolutely jacked in the game. Her presence alone is terrifying, like she'd been training all 5 years to take down the monster who slaughtered a dozen soldiers and when she turns up he's just a worried old man. I get why they made the changes they made, I just don't agree with them.

HenryM

"you can kill anyone but Tommy and Maria!" Well... wish granted?

ksg

It's funny because there are so many added moments in the show that I think are great by themselves, but when you put it into context with the rest of the story, it's very incoherent and hurts the overall narrative.

HenryM

I'm with Milena on this one, ginger women are gorgeous :)

Kara

obvious warning: searching for game cutscenes on youtube will absolutely spoil Season 3 of the show lol

Connor

You guys were asking if the actor wanted to leave, and that you didn’t understand. No that’s exactly how it played out in the video game also haha it was brutal and lots of confusion

Mike

It's worth mentioning that Pedro Pascal knew this was coming and signed on for the show knowing it wasn't going to be a long, multi-season commitment. He wouldn't have done it otherwise.

Floweyyyy

Just to clarify: Yes, in the second game Joel is also killed by Abby at the beginning of the story. For most people the second game lasts about 25 - 30 hours long (depending on how good and fast you are at the game), Joel is killed after the first 2 or 3 hours of gameplay. His death in the show adaptation had some differences compared to the game. For example, in the game, it wasn't Dina who was accompanying Joel and saw him being surrounded and attacked by Abby's group, it was Tommy who was with him in that part. Also, in the game, we didn't find out Abby's backstory and motivations for killing Joel until much later (like, we only found out about it halfway through the game). So in the game, Abby and her group just show up, kill Joel in a slowly and cruelly way, and we don't know anything about them or why they did it. Because of that, players don't feel any compassion or understanding for them in that part, we just hate them there (and the hatred hits even harder because Joel and Tommy saved Abby in the game just like Joel and Dina did in the series, but in the game we don't know anything about her in that part, so when she betrays and shoots Joel's leg, it was a huge WTF moment for us).

Daniel Molina

This gotta be a record for the amount of character related jinxes spoken by both of you right? 😂😂😂 One of the best reactions in this channel’s history

Vivasvan Gautam

Oh man. This brings back memories. I do not like to play games, but I enjoy watching play through of people on youtube. Joel's death scene was brutal and left so many gamers absolutely fuming. I remember a person breaking their gaming consoles in anger.💀 And the thing is, many games actually give players choice on how story unfolds. We are given options and that has effect on how story unfolds, and that in turn impacts what ending we get. Some games can have multiple plots and multiple endings. But not last of us. We have to witness the story here as the creators wish to say. We can't change anything in it. We can just sit with our emotions and feel what game wants to convey to us.

Nyeisha Melvina Clark

Leave it to LM to immediately understand Abby and appreciate her as a character than most game players that played the game a while ago and still don't get it. I never played the game but I could tell just after watching this episode that she would easily have one of if not then THE best storyline in the whole show.

petitcorbeau

Abby's storyline is definitely one of the reason I love the game so much

Camzeee

Milena has to watch Hannibal if her #1 celebrity crush is Gillian Anderson. I really wish that show was more popular. It's genuinely up there as one of my favorite shows of all-time and people generally avoid it because of the horror elements and links to the movies.

JayFi

The game and the show have always been about one thing for me: hard earned catharsis. This is the crux of what all 3 central characters are trying to find. Joel with Ellie after his own daughter's death. Abby after her own father's death. Did she just get that catharsis? We'll see. Ellie and the potential revenge path in the wake of her father figure's death. I personally think the game's arc was a work of genius. Few authors take the kind of chances Neil took. For me, it worked. Enjoy, ladies! Great analysis as always!

JayFi

I agree. I think Hannibal was one of the more underrated shows of the last 25 years. Great performances.

Sanjeh

The moment when Ellie is on the floor telling Joel to get up is very hard, it's impossible not to be moved by Joel's death. The reaction is at the height of the episode, I cried and I enjoyed it very much

windyMelon

You know it's serious when the Serbian comes out

Manuel Gomez

If ya feel this way about it happening on episode two imagine us who waited years for a second game just for this to happen an hour into it 😭😭

Brayden Underscore

Thank you for at least having empathy and understanding towards Abby’s character 🙏🏻

Bolt G

I wonder how common trauma like Abbie's manifests into that intense revenge, hatred in reality, or is it just because there's nothing better to do in a post-apocolyptic world then to hunt them down. surely there's better ways to spend ur life than obsessing about someone like that i dunno

Alex

to be honest i was worried for Loyla i never seen her look so Distraught.
