though English weirdness strikes again: if you want to modify the text any, the first line might be "see?" or "hear that?"...or "proof" or borrow a page from _Beowulf_, where the first line is "Hwaet" which means nothing, but gets the listener's attention......so maybe "!!" in your great illustration?

I think “Hear that?” is most correct in this case - he’s not just getting the other person’s attention, he’s specifically drawing attention to a sound.
