The thing I love most about Gear 5 is that Its this awesome powerful transformation that came in while fighting an extremely strong opponent with huge stakes. Something common in Shonen. (Bleach Naruto DBZ and dozen of others.) But unlike just about all the others that are based off of super serious moods, loseing control, Being super BA, or being enraged.... Luffy is silly. He does not stand and aura farm. He does not scream his head off. He is not some out of control thing. These things are pretty much troupes now. Ones that often get repeated in the same anime. (Love DBZ.... But we got super Sayian and then slightly different hair options over over over for years. ) But Gear 5 is a full change. Its the combination of just about everything luffy is. Its happy and Joyfull and unique. And it plays such a strong narrative role in bringing the entire stroy together. Its not just a powerup for the sake of it. THATS why it is my fav anime transformation.

I dont know if it happened all the time, but its fun thinking back about alot of luffy moments when he gets serious and drums play, and then the whole drums of liberation connection

Gotta love how even the lightning thing is kinda foreshadowed just by Luffy's fight with Enel. He already knows he can touch it no problem, might as well try to grab and use it!
