A fun tidbit is that while the balalaika is a stringed instrument, it is also the nickname for the Dragunov rifle we see Balalaika use in the flashback, her skill with said rifle is how she earned her nickname (her birth name is actually Sofia) In the manga they mention that Balalaika was actually meant to represent USSR in the Olympics in 1984, but the USSR boycotted it making her join the paratroopers instead.
