Maybe they wrote the season before the crash and couldn't entirely rewrite it before filming started, so they just added in small lines like "Sly closes all the time even in this market" and "bad real estate market." Because otherwise, Rita becoming a real estate agent makes no sense. Plus outside of those throw away lines, the actual effects of the crash are no where in the show so they clearly didn't plan for it.

I’m guessing Rita’s thought process with real estate is that her friend can show her the ropes and get started, then take her maternity leave, and by the time she’s ready to go back to work after the baby is a little older maybe everything will have evened out and she’s already got the basics down so she can hit the ground running.
