I’m at the part where Angel is telling Buffy about Dru so if you figure it out later, I’ll delete this, lol. He didn’t do it unconsciously, but he was possessed by a demon and soulless. Vampires are soulless monsters and in s1, the Master mentioned that he (Angel) was one of the most evil vampires he had known. The thing is Angel has a soul now, so he experiences severe guilt for the actions he did while soulless, even though it wasn’t technically “him”. I will add, however, that this shows a pattern for him as a vampire. The girl he killed in the Romani tribe was young, he tortured Drusilla bc she was chaste and innocent, and now he’s “in love with” Buffy. Seems he has a thing for young innocent girls, even when he *has* a soul.

One fun thing about that episode that I didn’t notice on first watch is how Buffy and Spike always do what they say they will do. It’s kinda honorable, lol. Like, Buffy could’ve definitely killed Dru then, but she promised a trade (let everyone go or Dru gets it) and since he let everyone go, she didn’t kill Dru. Likewise, Spike promised Ford he’d turn him if he gave him Buffy. He did, so Spike turned him, even though he could’ve just killed him then and there. It’s not always the smartest choice for either of them, but they’re both true to their word and I respect it, lol.

1:20:25 the way the show sometimes uses magic as a stand in for drugs/addictive habits is actually so interesting! It really delves into how difficult it can be to get out of something like that.

Yeah like others have said, when Angel was “evil” before he was cursed with a soul, he turned Drusilla and did terrible things to her. Now he has a soul so like, he was consciously doing bad things when he didn’t have a soul but the soul he was cursed with caused him to feel guilt for everything even though it was the demon that took over his body, not his human soul, that chose to do the evil things.

Vampires aren’t possessed by a demon, they ARE a type of demon. Possession is something that can be reversed, exorcised, and you can’t do that with a vampire. Becoming a vampire gives the person bloodlust and enhanced strength and aggression. They lose their soul, which is their human sense of morality, inhibitions, guilt, etc. That combo means if they have violent ideas and urges like “I’m gonna kill that guy because I’m hungry” or “I hate that person, so I want to hurt them” they’re plenty powerful enough to follow through and there’s no conscience telling them not to, so they do it. But there’s no separate entity inside them that gives them ideas and/or forces them to do evil. Sorry for the multiple comments! These are great episodes and as always it’s so fun to watch with you!

For planning: 13 and 14 (Surprise/Innocence) is another two-parter this season.

I might kick the hornets nest with this since it’s pretty divisive: A vampire is not the person that was killed. It is a demon walking around in a corpse. The victims soul is gone. Angelus did all that fucked up shit to Drusilla. Angel is a vampire but with his human soul restored. In the buffyverse, the soul is what allows us to grow, feel guilt and shame and love and all the things. All the moral compass stuff comes from your soul. So Angel the man has to live with the guilt and shame of all the things the monster in him did. I really appreciate your discomfort with the age difference between him and Buffy for some reason. You’re right. But I still love their story.

Buffy is right up there with Dana Scully (from X-Files) for excellence at running and fighting in heels.

It's funny there was a grave in the mausoleum for Du Lac cuz in the Vampire Chronicles, Louis' friends often refer to him as Louis Du Lac (rather than using his whole name Louis De Pointe du Lac).

Yeah I mean, we could get into the stuff about Buffy having an ancient soul, etc., but really, in the end, I just want her to have someone. Her attempts to date normal dudes have been disastrous (getting them killed or them betraying her and stuff) -- so for the sake of Buffy's happiness I always rooted for them because that's what she wants. And because they are two lonely beings -- two misfits together.
