Yeah that beam of light you see at the beginning after the explosion is radiation. Also the characters and everything are the actual people that were there during the disaster. Of course, they take some creative liberties. Also with the amount of radiation that was escaping from the reactor their bodies were literally dissolving and breaking down at a cellular level. Everybody who came close to the reactor was doomed to die. Of course, the government, Soviet Union, didn't tell them the facts and downplayed the disaster.
