I understand and agree with James logic/ethics but I also think he isn’t nearly strong enough to deal with the shit he has to deal with. Eating a Cam soul isn’t it but he needs BUFFS. He’s going up against people that are bulletproof.

Oh, I completely agree. It’s actually the biggest narrative motivator for more dungeon delving at this point. They don’t just need mild perks that make life easier or more interesting, they - and their knights specifically - need tools that give them an edge.

why not duplicate that flamey thing? or other dead people "drops", for the matter, in a "know what they give" way, has it been addressed?

You could even wrap it into that conversation about Anesh clones!!! It's an excellent question

I can’t help but feel that James has crossed some philosophical and magical threshold, such that the more he makes choices (especially costly or painful ones) which reinforce his James-ness, the more James-ish he becomes. (In a power-level sense.) Through consistent application of moral and magical means, he’s wearing a James-shaped groove into reality. I believe he’s now a proto-pillar: The Paladin.

I would guess that there is more to becoming a Pillar than conceptual weight. It's implied that there's a limited, specific number of Pillars that exist at once in this chapter, which says to me that there's some kind of governing factor at play. When we first met Blitz she said there were rules, and not knowing them was a form of protection - and I could be misremembering but I think she also implied that the Pillars are conceptually linked with the dungeons somehow.

They have a duplicator. Duplicate the flame thing, then put the original away nice and safe, then duplicate a crap tonne more.
