What a nice surprise. I love this show.

MacFarlane originally pitched this as a Star Trek series. The whole idea here is to get back to the upbeat view of the future that made Star Trek popular in the first place.

The Orville is essentially Seth MacFarlane's love-letter to Star Trek: The Next Generation, so the similarities to 90s Star Trek are very deliberate. Despite that, it's not fair to say The Orville is just an homage to TNG - it's executed very well (for the most part - I find some of the comedy in S1 a bit grating TBH, and think S2 balances it a lot better), and really grows into it's own thing whilst maintaining the flavour of its inspiration. There's a significant number of Star Trek fans who considered it more Star Trek than the actual Star Trek shows Paramount were creating at the time! There's also Trek alumni involved - the doctor (who'll you'll recognise from Castle) was a recurring character on Deep Space 9, and Jonathan Frakes (from TNG) directs a few episodes of the series
