Awesome video man. I hadn't stopped to realise how many stories use these techniques and how much that contributes to pulling you into the rest of the plot but looking back at it it's *really obvious* and I feel kind stupid for not having see it before. I guess I'm so much in the habit of just reading and getting lost in a story that I'm still learning how to judge and enjoy things on the meta analytical level, something I'm really enjoying learning from people such as yourself through youtube videos. It really makes me wish I had of studied some of this stuff more at uni and enjoyed it instead of getting myself stuck in the sciences doing stuff I really don't enjoy all that much. Just goes to show though that you never need to stop learning new things in life and trying new things. You never know what might strike a chord with you and what you might be able to make of what you've learnt.

Hello Future Me

Honestly, very little of what I put in my videos I learnt at uni. But I'm glad you found it helpful! I've found myself analysing stories the more I make these videos.

Very helpful video, especially as I happen to be re-writing the first chapter to one of my projects because the other one just didn't work. I didn't know why, but that was then. I knew the concepts you talk about in the video, but I had never seen or heard them put together so logically and succinctly that now it seems obvious. Of course that is the way the first chapter of a book should be arranged! The elements that should be included in the first chapter are apparent and only a fool would argue any other approach! That is the highest level of praise for a teacher/philosopher: that once he or she has explained a topic the student/disciple can no longer even imagine that things should be another way. What I am really realizing is that when I initially wrote (all those many, many years ago), I wrote instinctually. The instinct came from years of reading voluminous amounts of good books. After 20 years of reading and writing legal briefs and court opinions, I lost those instincts and now I actually have to learn to write fiction. I've already learned more for my patreon contribution than from my school tuition. Thanks!

Great work! very entertaining and enriching :)

Hello Future Me

Good luck with your first chapter! A lot of this stuff is quite simple, but as you say, it can be difficult seeing that through the stress and multitudes of things we wish to include in our first chapters. And thank you for such high praise!

This was extremely helpful! All your writing videos have helped me with my writing extensively. I honestly would not be as far as I am without the insight your videos have given me.
