I disagree, the finale of S1 is great and the first few episodes of 2 are fantastic, as is the rest of S2.

I don't find Gunn's actions at the end unbelievable. Vampires are usually shown to be ID creatures until someone comes along and inspires them to operate beyond the thirst for the kill. Think the master, angelus, Adam, and here the leader of the nest. He inspired his gang of vamps to retaliate and then planned a way of weakening Gunn, the leader of opposing (winning) gang in hopes of destroying them all, by killing Alana. After Alana is found to be dead and huge face-off is set to play out. Angel intervenes, kills the vamp leader and asks for ceasefire. The vampires agree to it out of self-preservation and Gunn agrees because he knew that fight would end in more causalities on his side. Being a good leader, he prioritized the lives of the rest of his crew over his thirst for vengeance, I think in that moment despite having lost so much he proved he is still a great leader not truly weakened by his rival's plan to destroy him and his allies. At least that's how i see it.

The finale of S1 is great and shows potential as to what the show will be, but the season as a whole is dragging bar a few episodes.
