For those who get that the B-plot is actually the A-plot and vice versa, this is one of their favorite episodes. This is really a Buffy-fan litmus test. I'm very happy that Cass got it.

The thing Xander brings to the group, and Buffy in particular, was actually revealed in the first season. It’s interesting how Cass recognized Xander’s desire/willingness to help as a potential negative (I won't say whether it will or won't become one) when up to this point it has been the thing that has most clearly defined him. Buffy would’ve remained dead in the first season finale if not for his willingness to put Buffy’s life ahead of his bruised ego, if not for his desire to help her however possible, despite his lack of physical strength and intelligence. Also, I don’t think it’s a coincidence that in an episode where all of the characters tell Xander to stay away, in order to protect him and keep him safe, that there is an apocalypse. And in the end, without anyone else’s knowledge, he does help. The gang may have saved the world, but Xander saved them. Another great reaction to another great episode!
