'Lifeline' Short Story (Patreon)

This is kind of a surprise short story this month. This one just sort of... emerged... from me. I blame 'Illicit Alliance', I've been in a very Grayson mindset, and this is a canonical scene that I honestly can't believe I hadn't written up previously. It's a pivotal moment for both characters that eventually determined some PRETTY IMPORTANT EVENTS later in Red Lantern.

This story has some adult themes, but I'd rate it no higher than PG-13, for swearing, discussion of war, PTSD, etc.

Takes place immediately following the events of Heretic, and Grayson's journey back to Amuresca at the end of Kindred (but before the epilogue)

As ever, pleasepleasplease let me know how you feel about this one. Comments, critiques, just general flailing. Your enthusiasm for these side stories helps feed my desire to write more, so ; )

I had the great privilege of reading this in your stream- and it was SUCH a great story. :D I was so distracted with all the cuteness, and the real raw emotions and conversation that when the details for the set up of the stuff in Red Lanter later came up they smacked in the face with such a force. I've always loved Luther, and I'd liked Grayson- but with Illicit Alliance and now this story, I absolutely adore Grayson. He's such an empathetic soul. <3 Thank you for the story, it was amazing!

If you want to know what works: simple... it's the purity of the emotion you portray. The helpless, hopelessness from Luther. The concern and desire to help from Grayson. Even the way Luther doesn't even know WHY he went there... it all just FEELS so right... so true!

Beautiful story.. The tenderness and vulnerability. Things that Grayson can take on without feeling shame or impropriety but are a foreign country to Luther. Hopefully he can accept them and be a stronger man for it. Luther - One can be strong for everybody, and there is no shame in putting down the mantle and accepting someone to be strong for you.

I essentially did in Luther's dream sequence in Conviction. Past the injury, he's out of it for quite some time. His men are the ones who pull him out of there, and Johannes takes over as Admiral for awhile, until he's recovered enough. That's basically it.

Rukis, this is beyond wonderful. I crush harder on Grayson with every work you produce. He is honestly perfect. I'm totally shipping Luther x Grayson in my head.

Grayson has his own demons from his youth.. and knowing that part of himself makes his accepting of other's demons.

Just....wow. such raw unfiltered emotion between two men who care so much more for eachother then they let on. This takes their relationship to a whole new level. Luther being so vulnerable, yearning for someone to unburden his heart and souland being willing to drop the mask he always wears. And Grayson just..i love that man so much. He could have taken advantage of the whole situation but instead turns in to the most caring kind big hearted man. I honestly had tears when he pulled Luther in to that hug. You have given so much depth and heart to them and for that i thank you <3

This is just. fucking. GREAT. It adds a huge piece of the relationship of just WHY Grayson would go to Serwich at all, and adds to the 'Trails' story immensely. It also gives a reason as to why Shivah would fall for such a guy. One knew there had to be SOMETHING other than what you put into the novesl!

Wow. What a story. I got one paragraph in and downloaded it for safekeeping. A different perspective on Luther returning to Serwich, immediately after Heretic (which remains my all-time favorite of yours) is something I didn’t know I needed! As others have said, I love the way you’ve portrayed the relationship between these two. Getting it from Grayson was a real treat. Please keep giving us these new perspectives!

Your ability to deconstruct characters never ceases to amaze me. I already knew Luther was a passionate and emotional man. I also knew Grayson isn’t the typical scoundrel he puts on to the world, but seeing both of their strong facades break down step by step and how their vulnerabilities intertwined was just incredible.
