We should try the cave first. I'd love to trust his judgement, but it's definitely more likely that somepony else knows about the secret passage under his bed than that somepony's monitoring the underwater caves that are pretty much undiscoverable if you can't breathe underwater.

Agree. Check around/inside the guard's house first then if it has someone near/inside, use the underwater cave. Don't want to miss out on free goodies, if possible!

Take the house route. There are a number of supporting reasons, first and foremost, it was suggested by a friend whom we wish to trust. We also might find items of use and we're low on energy. Can't afford to be exhausted when saving everyone else. Final supporting reason is defensive. We have no idea what's in that cave underwater or even if it goes through, while we can safely (with a vague definition of safe) assume the house pathway is clear.
