Last time I went into a cave, I got slashed by bats. Yeah...I think the young princess should take that safer upwards path.

Go up to the hight place here, you could have a panoramic view of the terrain and maybe you can find Spike or smell him, but carefully, anybody can see you, specially the diamond dogs. try to find a rock with a hole for be safe.

The rock by the cave seems to fit perfectly with the cave entrance, and that seems too suspicious. That may be another diamond dog cave. I'd suggest going up so that you have a better view of what's to the right.
