Don't read the book. The show has already screwed up a couple important scenes from the lore. It'll just piss you off like it did a lot of us because there was no need for them to deviate from the book lore.

The book is called Fire and Blood and it's written as a history book about the Dance of Dragons. It's written from the point of view of the Maesters of the time and it's just one book.

Also there is the animated series that came with the GoT DvD's that goes over the broad strokes of this time period and will spoil some of the big reveals later.
