Great movie! Absolutely beautiful!

After reading the reviews of this film, I had high expectations, but I'm walking away kind of disappointed. The awards and acclaim come from cinematography and period piece art direction, which are well deserved. Some of the symbolism is unique to the culture; however, it borrows from many others, making the story seem muddled and disjointed from my perspective yet wonderful and mesmerizing to others. Perhaps I'm being biased, but I feel this film has a nostalgic sentiment that may influence objective reviews. I cannot give it more than (4) stars and that is for its cinematography and its artistic creativity. However, it is a good film and an excellent representation of the goal of this new reaction series. They renamed "El Laberinto del Fauno" because the character of Pan was thought to be more widely recognized in many cultures than a generic faun, despite the fact that they are two different mythology characters. I think renaming it to "Pan's Labyrinth" dilutes the cultural context and mythological nuances del Toro intended to convey and points back to my specific critique of the film.

A suggestion for your Lights, Camera, Culture series, "Quest for Fire" from 1981. It is a Canadian/French co-production that won numerous awards both foreign and domestic. It is story about prehistoric man. The amazing thing about this movie is that not one word of human dialect is spoken, and yet you completely understand and feel for these people. It is a very interesting movie that I, at least found very enjoyable. Just thought it would fit in with the project.

It's been a few years since I last watched this movie. It is still just as good as I remember it. Guillermo del Toro is a brilliant director and the cast is just wonderful.
