Delisiousing....Biss is continuing to rewrite the English language. I love it. Miss Biss is learning the finer points of couch physics. As to the accuracy of the film: The initial battle between Cutting's gang and Priest Vallon's gang appears to have been based on an event that took place June 21, 1835, on Pearl Street between Chatham and Centre Streets, in the heart of Five Points. The New York Sun wrote of "a most disgraceful riot" whose origin "was a dispute between two native citizens and several foreigners." According to the paper's account, "the riotous assemblage amounted to several thousand (people), many of those concerned armed with stones, brickbats and bludgeons." (IMDB) The draft riots depicted in the film are largely accurate, but the real-life Bill "The Butcher" Poole was killed several years before the riots took place. (IMDB) Bill "The Butcher" Cutting is based largely on real-life New York gang leader William Poole, who also was known as "The Butcher" and had much the same prestige as Sir Daniel Day-Lewis' character. So, by and large, this film is close to being historically correct. See you next time Miss Biss.

DiCaprio was the lead in this film and Daniel Day Lewis totally took over this film.....he should have won an Oscar in my opinion.....The scene when Bill is wrapped in an American flag was so symbolic of how a country took in immigrants and treated them....Amsterdam realizes how much hate he has but also realizes how much respect he has for Bill at the same time.......he breaks down crying recognising the conflict with in him.....This is a country of immigrants and still today we struggle with that fact....Natives....Imigrants....who are we?????????

At this point in time California and Oregon were already admitted as States, and was colonized across most of the current nation. The travel by land would have been long going, and rough without roads though. By ship is a lot easier
