In hindsight, the climax with Holmes and Moriarty isn't actually that much of a surprise if you've read "The Final Problem". In the Conan Doye stories, Moriarty is known in the criminal underworld only as a respected scholar and professor; Holmes deduces his reputation as a criminal mastermind after noticing a painting in Moriarty's office that he shouldn't have been able to afford on his teaching salary. Edit: Mycroft is just as smart, if not smarter, than Sherlock, but chooses not to put his intellect to a practical use like his brother; in the short story in which Mycroft was introduced, Sherlock describes him as having no ambition or energy, and about almost any topic, he would rather be considered wrong than make the effort to prove himself right.
