I'm glad you didn't see the switch coming. We've seen so many of them, it's getting easier and easier to guess them. You will find so many clues by rewatching the film. The first time I saw it, I was especially fascinated by the criticism of consumer society. The narrator (I guess he's that Jack he always talks about as someone else, he no longer has his own identity) lives in an Ikea catalog and has nothing but his material possessions. Modern values shatter psyches. I didn't find it on my own, I read it: the film is about fascism. Brad Pitt is super cool and funny and doesn't sound like a fascist, right? But he is a charismatic leader who proposes a new order, his terrorist soldiers follow him blindly, adulate him, forget their names, find meaning in their existence in clubs reserved for men exalting violence... The enthusiasm aroused by its destructive madness is quite disturbing... It starts with very deep beautiful lines, it ends with deaths. Perhaps the film's message is this: a shallow consumerist society is fertile ground for such dangers. But what really struck me when I saw the film again was this initial explanation: "Suddently I realize that all of this _ the gun, the bombs, the revolution, has got something to do with a girl named Marla Singer". I thought she met Jack at the wrong time, as he tells her at the end, but that line tells us that Marla started it all. Jack was not emotionally structured enough to meet someone to connect with. He had to become Tyler so he could go further with her.

Wow! Great analysis on some of the topics this film touched upon. It really impressed me how they were able to layer themes of masculinity, society, violence, love and empathy in such a well paced and interesting film. The ending of the film really wraps everything nicely and Our protagonist and Tyler Durden have become one of my favorite unreliable narrators out there. Such a creative twist and absolutely loved how they utilized to move the plot forward. I think she met The Narrator at the best time.
